Atco Groundsman cone clutch

Recommended Posts

Hi, can anyone tell me if the cone clutch on an Atco Groundsman is supposed to have a lining of some sort or is it metal to metal, thank you.

Metal to metal. We used to see the odd one that had been over lubricated and the cast cone and cup had absorbed some excess oil which then leached out when the clutch warmed up resulting in repeated bouts of slippage. Various cures were tried including dunking in petrol and cooking with a blow torch (not simultaneously!) , some more successful than others.

From memory there is a small screw that is removed to add a couple of drops of oil to aid the cone in sliding on the shaft and that it was over enthusiastic oiling that led to the excess being thrown around inside the cup but the actual friction faces should be left dry.
