Testing out the forge

Recommended Posts

Last year I made a forge out a gas bottle we had laying around, i've made a few little things but nothing of much significance so I thought i'd make some shelf brackets.

Slight cuts were put in them so I could bend them in the same place.

All the components before bending, not bad to say they were done by eye

Above the photo shows them with all the welding complete and a coating of wax.

And the finished thing, the screws will get replaced eventually with black ones.

Nice work Ewan. One mistake though. Mine! Showed them to swmbo. "You could make me some."

Thanks :D My mum has already commissioned some, quite a challenge to make without a proper anvil.

I've got an anvil. May make a forge one day.

The tube going under on yours and the extension lead, make me think there's a fan somewhere.

I keep looking at anvils but they seem to be expensive, yes i've got an air bed pump thats rigged up to it, works well in my opinion :)

I purchased an anvil years ago, believe it or not was at

a car boot sale. Big heavy bugger aswell! It took a lot to

carry it back to the carpark.

Yes, i've seen those, they go for quite a bit of money on ebay, fortunately last month I managed to purchase a fairly small one with a stand at a show for a reasonable price. Its a good size for me and fairly easy to move around which is good! :)

I use a 330mm length of Rail Track as an Avil and Former (was going to use it as a WH Tractor front weight). It complies with modern day EN13674-1 and 49E1 DIN S49 pattern.

Weighs 36lbs (16.33Kgs). Quality piece of old British Steel.

I dug up 2 pieces when working on the House shared Grounds which, coincidentally, is about 200yds (182.88mtrs) from the London-Brighton Railway .
