O&R Type 98 Engine

Recommended Posts

This arrived a couple of weeks ago, a fairly early 1960's type 98 engine, the paint colour is original as far as I can tell, I haven't seen another in this unusual colour.

If anyone knows what tool it may have been used for please let me know.

The tank bracket & strap needed a bit of adjustment and some screws, now reassembled.

I don't know the exact application for this engine, that's why I asked in the first post.

David

Yes you did, I was so engrossed in looking at the engine I didn't finish reading. Very cool!

I've had a better look at the parts attached to the PTO shaft of this engine, it looks like an adaptor kit for something like a propeller, which doesn't help with identifying the original use.

But I have found a reference in a parts list from 1964 for an externally threaded PTO shaft (part no. 42-39) being used on the type 98 engine, clearly mine doesn't have one, but it could have been changed as someone has definitely had this engine apart, the screws for the induction housing have been shortened too, so it probably had an adaptor plate or housing.

Also I had a go at bidding on a another type 98 engine (I asked the seller what type it was as it looked unusual), I didn't win it but here are some pictures of it showing the externally threaded PTO shaft mentioned in the parts list, together with an adaptor housing I haven't seen before. The adaptor housing looks like was attached to something flat, also note the long stop switch wire.

Anyone seen one like this before?

Oh dear, looks like O&R engines are now being targeted by steampunk sellers. :(

Who knows what this Type 98 once originally came off;

If you look closely you will notice the cylinder is missing the top fin and if that isn't a glow plug then I don't know how it will run, not that it would run for long with the massive gas tank provided.

Could this be from a sno tiger?

Not sure if you were there yet or remember but there was a post on the old forum when a guy had a whole bunch of stuff but he would never reply so I don't think anyone was able to buy it. Anyway, he had some type of vacuum/blower thingys. Maybe?

Strange the parts diagram for the Sno* Tiger doesn't give the engine type, but the pictured engine looks to have a gearbox which would rule it out.

Was it this guy that had the bunch of O&R stuff? I've checked and I joined about a year after the sale post.

The mounting flange on that red engine pictured above looks similar to one of the Keene pumps I’ve seen.

Does anyone here have one of these cool Little Prospector units?

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/gold-prospecting/515078-what-weird-little-contraption.html

It's not from a Keene pump, I have one and it uses the standard "short radial engine mount" which the complete pump is attached to.

I have started a new thread for the Little Prospector unit you found.

Not 100% certain but this engine may have gone to a Rota Shear lawn edger. I came across this website and it looks to be a similar color. I contacted the owner and asked if he would post some additional photos. Look at the additional link on this page next to the little pics where he added some really nice high resolution photos.

I should probably spend less time looking for/at O&R stuff and actually rebuilding them... it’s addicting!  I enjoy trying to hunt down stuff. I don’t have the skills of David but it’s satisfying to stumble on to the odd ones once in awhile.

Excellent detective work Clint, looking at the lawn edger in the link and comparing it with the two Type 98 engines, it looks to be a match for both the color and the mounting flange used on the red engine.

I'm slowly trying to get back to normal, been away from here for far too long and have quite a bit of catching up to do.
