Cub Cadet reacted to Ian in Southbend Model 5 "Workshop" 9"Lathe.
Hi all, it's been a while!!

Well..... Due to health issues, that time in life has unfortunately come when I can no long do any more builds in the workshop.. Sooooo
The time has come to sell a few bits, the 1st being my Southbend Model 5 "Workshop" 9" lathe..
As you know this has done me very proud over the many many years I have owned it..

As you can see from the photo's the Lathe comes with a vast amount of tools, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, a facing plate, a center rest, Armstrong tool holder set, even the small drawed cabinet I keep the Lathe tools in.
I made a "power cross-feed" do-dat years ago which works quite well and does save a lot of hand winding!

The bench the lathe is bolted to can be part of the deal "if you want it" at no extra cost.. Be quite nice to have the space back..
The bench with the Lathe bolted to it measures 6ft long, 2ft 6" deep and 5ft 4" tall...

Also bolted to the bench is a "quick change" (bits of WH's) system for changing pulley speeds, a lever is much faster than having to unbolt and move the pulleys each time you need to change speeds.
If you don't want the bench the pulleys and motor can be easily taken off.

If you have any questions please ask away..

Oh, I'm asking £400 ono for all the lathe stuff..

    Collection from Hawkhurst, Kent..

    Thanks

For the last few months I have been medically chair bound with the exception of odd forays to the garages and workshop to find things. Father Christmas was very good to me giving me a comfy office chair, an LED head torch and a Drill Doctor drill sharpener. My new lockdown past time is sitting at the kitchen table in my comfy chair ,my headlight beaming away and my drill sharpener on the table in front of me.  Over 50 years of workshopping I have somehow amassed a huge collection of drill bits , some were my Father's , Rhys gave me a pile of Morse tapered lathe drills  but most I have bought when embarking on a new project. Although I am quite capable of sharpening drill bits ,it has not been a regular workshop maintenance task and consequently it was quicker to buy some new drills rather than sort out and sharpen old ones, UNTIL NOW !      The drill Doctor machine will cope with drills from 1mm ( if you are careful ) up to 3/4" . The drill bit is set in a chuck which aligns the flutes to produce a point angle of 118 - 135 degrees  with minor up or down variation.  The chuck is then slotted into a holding socket above the diamond grinding wheel to be rotated slowly by hand, two turns will dress up a tired drill to new, 10 turns will restore a broken drill.  The machine was not cheap but works extremely well, will cater for split point drills and masonry bits, clean working ,not too noisy and a nice way to spend a few hours in the warm recycling useful things. I would certainly never have stood at the grinder for many hours hand sharpening hundreds of drill bits. I have now ordered a couple of graded drill bit holders so that I can again sit at the table and sort out all the sizes and then give a couple of sets to my sons. I recently bought a spring caliper guage for measuring valve shims and was very pleasantly surprised to find that it can display in mm / inches and also fractions of inches so I can now identify some of the odd sized tapping drills I have. That should take up a few hours maybe I will improve my set up with my headlamp and some wireless earphones tuned in to Planet Rock!

I bought a basic Martek Drill Sharpener back in 1986, attaches to an electric drill and fixed into a drill holder back in that period. Only covered bits from 1/8" upwards. Still have it, but not used much.
I tend to dispose of, or sharpen by hand, any bits under 1/8" and use only for wood after. Although I was successful in hand sharpening 2 off 1/32" drill bits after I broke them while working on my latest project.
To be on the safe side, I started the hole with a good one, then followed up with the sharpened one and went fine with no issues.
Winter 'clips my wings' with projects due cold workshop and other priorities. Like you're having to do, I do much of small work on the table in the warmer conditions.
The other thing keeping me busy is learning the secrets of a different OS from Windows to MacBook Pro after 15 years using Microsoft.

Next bits have arrived, I picked up a pair of 4.00-4 tri ribs to try on the front for the bargain price of £12.50 delivered.

these might not stay long term but should look much better for now.

I think the rear hubs are original but have been drilled to suit the replacement wheels.

The engine was missing the air filter housing but I have managed to source one from an atco which looks the same and fits... now to source an air filter!

Cub Cadet reacted to Joseph in Bolens large frame snow/dirt blade replica
It has been a while since we have have posted. We have started a new project which is to build a replica of the Bolens large frame snow/dirt blade, Bolens part number 18085. The simple rule is that it is not allowed to snow until we are finished

This is a very rare attachment and realistically our only chance of owning one is to make a replica. Chris Stoneman recently purchased one of the few know to exisit in the UK and we picked it up for him which gave us the chance to take lots of measurements.

Chris's blade did not come with the lift push rods and we need some help with those. In the manual, it says that the distance between the centre line of the holes in the clevis rodes is 26-1/2" which gives a bit of an insight into the lengths of the rods. We did some searching on the Internet and that highlighted that the push rods are 20" long for the early large frames and 22-1/2" long for the HT's. We will be fitting this to our HT20 which suggests we need to make 22-1/2" rods. If someone has this attachement I would be grateful if you can measure the length of the push rods and confirm if they are 22-1/2". Also it would be helpful to know the length of the threaded part of the rod. Thanks in advance.

At the moment we get one tractor day a week so this project will take a while but it should be fun and I hope you follow along. I am making some notes of the work we are doing and making videos of the progress. In today's video I cover the preperation and cutting of the metal.

After a long search I’ve finally found a round hood! It’s far from perfect but should be a nice little project.

it came with the original engine (Tecumseh 6hp electric start) so first job is to get that running and fit it. It also came with the original deck so once the engine it back on I will source a new belt and see if I can get the deck working. I also need to try and source some different wheels and an original steering wheel.

Back over the Border yesterday and today.
First though a pile of dirt to move from the yard. While Dunc got the tractor and trailer, I drove the digger up to the yard. Never operated a digger since I sold mine about 15yrs ago.
1-1/2 loads and the yard was cleared and levelled. Took the digger back down to the soon to be main workshop, then trailer was loaded with boards and taken up to the carport. Third bay was finished by lunch time. Photo' was taken before we started.

After lunch we started on the back gable end. Hopefully get that finished tomorrow and make a start on the other side.

It's a grand way to spend a Bank Holiday weekend.

    Hi all,

Hope everyone is well. Haven't posted on here in a long while as work is incredibly busy but try to pop on for a browse now and then. Just thought I'd share my latest purchase as it's pretty special (in my opinon!!) and I have been after one for years. Just the one picture for now, more to follow. Curious to know how many of these exist in the UK?
