diesel nut 0 #1 Posted June 1, 2020 Hi all, First post here after lurking for years. My dad just dug this old Planet Jr. seeder out of the attic in the Ell of my grandpas farmhouse. As I understand it my great-grandpa bought it new or almost new and used it in his garden for years and then my grandpa used it for a while before it was put away. My dad wants to use it so he and my niece can plant corn this upcoming week. The problem is my great-grandpa has been gone about 36 years and my grandpa doesn't remember how to set it up. I've looked around and can't find an operators manual for it anywhere. Does anyone happen to know where I could find one or know how to set it up properly for corn? After looking it over on the bench I believe this is set up more like a drop seeder as there's no seed plates. It looks like you fill the Mason jar and screw it on, set a gate to whatever seed you're planting and as it goes along it opens as needed to drop the seed. Can't seem to get pictures to upload right now. Probably doing something wrong with them. Here's a post I did on another group that has the pictures https://gardentractortalk.com/forums/topic/79784-planet-jr-jiffy-seeder-help/ Thanks in advance, Stewart
Anglo Traction 1,016 #2 Posted June 3, 2020 Hi Stewart, Welcome, Not too familiar with that model in U.S. Although there are quite a few around in the UK. A quick search of the make revealed a Website Farmcollector.com which has an example (amongst many) of your version. I'm sure is much knowledge and info available from those owner/members. Good quality, looking and efficient machines. Like to know how you get on. Regards 1 diesel nut reacted to this
diesel nut 0 #3 Posted June 3, 2020 I did see that article in Farm Collector. I'm going to see if I can get a hold of him to see if he has any owners or operators manuals for it he might part with or be willing to make a copy of for me. I've been looking it over and freeing everything up the past couple days and think I figured out how it works and got some pictures of it There's a rod that runs up to the handle that you pull which moves the arm with the spring up and pulls the tab that the pencil is pointing to down. This turns it on and allows everything to move. With the lever pulled it lets the arm in the top of this pic ride on the wavy ridge on the inside of the wheel. Closed so no seed can get out. All the way open with the arm that rides on the wheel on a high spot. Pencil is pointing to a ridge on the plate that shakes the seed down. Another open with the arm on a low spot. Ridge is offset. The spring in the top of the pic keeps tension on the plate to bring the ridge back to the middle as the wheel turns. Looks like it's pretty simple to operate so hopefully it goes good for my dad when he uses it. I managed to get the info tag that tells you how far to move plate forward for what seed cleaned up. It doesn't list corn but when its all the way open is for planting peas so that should work with the corn seeds. It lists turnip, celery, onion, radish, parsnip, carrot, spinach, beet, salsify, beans, and peas for the seeds
