neil 524 #1 Posted August 3, 2014 Does anyone here know how to weld cast iron ? How hard is it to do ? I bought a belt driven planer which was a lovely bit on machinery , then the postal company decided to throw it around and break the cast iron parts This is what it was like before Hermes got hold of it . And after the damage.
Stormin 4,458 #2 Posted August 3, 2014 You can get special rods for cast iron. Do the prep in the usual way, but warm up the cast iron before welding. That looks as if it would fit in the oven. When the wife's out of course.
meadowfield 1,900 #3 Posted August 3, 2014 Neil, You can weld it, but you need to preheat the castings and try a disimmilar rod if you arc weld it. I've had reasonable success with the mig and mild steel, but never really tried breaking something I welded. I've got a small plough to weld up, will let you know how if goes. Wristpin 400 #4 Posted August 3, 2014 As above but also advisable to control the cooling down (bury it in dry sand) to avoid hearing the dreaded PING! Lots of good advice on welding matters (and all sorts of other things) to be found on the Mig Welding Forum. http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/
