Where do I start with diagnosing non starting 2 stroke Sachs diesel?

Recommended Posts

As the title says, where do I start when trying to diagnose a problem?

I don't think the fuel is getting through the injector, I removed it and connected it to the fuel line but nothing comes out and nothing is being returned to the tank. I do get a tiny squirt out of the pipe which connects to the injector but that seems as far as it gets? Not sure if it's a faulty injector or pump?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated ðŸ‘

Possibly get your local diesel shop to clean and test the injector and if that gets the all clear it points to the pump. Assuming , of course, that any filters are in good order.

If messing around with injectors etc be aware of the dangers of "injecting" diesel under the skin.

I think it's been standing a few years, so I've no real idea on the condition of it, but the previous owner said they never managed to get it started and as I only picked it up yesterday I'm only just now assessing what needs to be done to get it to start.

How does the injector work? Does the high pressure of the fuel have to overcome a spring loaded valve inside the injector?

What's it fitted to? Have you bled the injector pump? guessing its a bosch one. I have a sachs fitted to one of my ransomes MG40 crawlers

It's fitted to a Howard Gem, I think I got to the bottom of it now, after stripping the injector down, everything looked all nice and shiny so I reassembled it and tried again, frustratingly still no action from the end of the injector, then after many turns of the handle I noticed a slight weep around the outlet of the pump, so I stripped the banjo Union off cleaned all the matting surfaces then tightened it all back up again and hey presto, a fine mist of diesel from the injector

Hopefully it'll still work when under compression in the cylinder, but I think I might need a starter fuse for it now, fingers crossed I'll get it going soon,

Thanks for the advice so far guys

Well I think I'll be holding off on trying to start it now, I decided to pop the exhaust off and this is what was I was confronted with

Part of a rusty piston ring 😟

And a few little lumps taken out of the piston ring groove,

question now is, what are my options? Not sure on the spares situation for these, I'm guessing quite good in Germany as they seemed to be used in a lot of their machines, but I'm not sure over here, or do I try and look for another engine?
