Mountfield M1 coil.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Asking for a friend, he has just acquired a Mountfield M1, briggs engine.

Could anyone  advise on the correct coil for the engine?

Engine number in attached photo.

Thanks,

Joe.

You might be able to find a parts list on the briggs website, armed with the part number for the coil, search ebay for a replacement.Alternatively you would be able to get a genuine replacement from briggsbits they are UK based

You may be barking up the wrong tree as it is more likely to be the points need cleaning & failing that the condenser. These are located under the flywheel. His best bet is to get a magnetron from the 3.5hp Black Briggs engines that were fitted to many  16 - 18" mowers that have now rotted  away. He can then remove the old Magneto & cut the wires that go under the flywheel & fit the magnetron & never worry about points again.

Good advice about fitting a later Magnetron coil but the 130902 engine model number suggests a 5 hp engine which, I believe, may have a slightly different spacing between the mounting pillars from the suggested 3.5 HP donor for the coil.  Worth checking before buying.

The Magnetron equivalent to the original 298316 coil is 397358
