From what I can see on the linked site, the engine has a reduction gearbox driving the centrifugal concentrator bowl, this would have been fed with with sand/gravel and used to separate the waste & hopefully find the placer gold they were after. Of course all the waste sand, gravel end up in the stream, river or lake, which can cause water pollution from the minerals, hence why dredging is banned in some states.
