Amp Champ generator

Recommended Posts

Here's an older version Amp Champ model 4750.

Came without an engine so it's not technically correct but they all look the same to most people anyway.

The generator's cast housing is heavier and thicker compared to the newer versions and it also has a rough surface from the sand casting.

Bottom bends in the stand are facing out verses facing in, like the newer versions.

Here another Champ that I have added to my collection, its a 12V only version made for the US military. Unusually the engine serial number has been ground off, I don't know if all the ex-military ones were.

Since taking the pictures I have removed the incorrectly fitted NGK long-reach spark-plug and fitted a Champion UY6, this isn't the first time I've had a seller fit a new plug of the wrong type just before they shipped it. :banghead:

Has yours still got the serial number on the engine or has it been ground off like mine? They left the engine type on the over side though (type 122).

I should have spotted that!!! I guess the military got bored with removing the serial numbers from all of them.

David

From the serial #  1-25, Mine was built only 7 units after yours

Thanks for the Ad pic. That 4750 posted earlier is the only one I've ever seen so far that matches that Ad

I have just got hold of one of these, in pretty rough condition, but as usual, I want to resurrect it - save it from the metal recycler.

At this stage I know I need two things, a front cowl, and a coil - any suggestions on where I might get them.

Or any suggestions on what I might use if I can't find an original coil?? I've been reading a few things that suggest a Tecumseh coil might replace the original. The laminated core from the original must still be used, but the Tecumseh coil just replaces the original coil, fitting over the laminated core. Does anyone have any experience with that? Or other suggestions.

Unfortunately, I don't think my coil can be saved.....looks like it been melted by some kind of sinister alien Heat Beam (or similar).

It's an Australian Version, so it produces 240v, but I also note that the outlet seems to be missing as well.

It would be nice to know where you're located as that can help with who can help you the best if any. Assuming Australia so shipping parts comes into play.

Yes a Tecumseh coil can work but we can find you an O&R coil.

Here's one that will fit. It's a newer style than the one on there but the older ones are much more difficult find

Good blower housing/starter covers are hard to find too as everybody screws them up by drilling out the rivot because they can't figure out how to get the spool out. Sometimes they show up on epay as well.

You will need a new carb diaphragm as well. I have carb diaphragms and probably a coil if they don't want to ship overseas. Might be able to find a starter too but I keep the good ones for my own collection.

Missing electric plug

Ahhh Walfish - I've been reading through the Forum and IDed you as the bloke to speak to - if my search was fruitless, I was going to contact you.

Firstly - Yes - I'm here in Sydney Australia.

The eBay ad says he may not ship to Australia, but I will contact him and ask anyway, he may change his mind.

You mention you may have a coil and a starter......would you be open to sending it to Australia?  Of course I could send you the dollars via PayPal or similar. USMail to Australia is really expensive, so it would save me quite a bit if I could get all the parts from the one person, hence one package instead of three or four.

And while talking about the coil - any ideas of what might have happened to mine - it may not be clear from the photos, but it looks completely melted. I'm thinking that perhaps it have a massive short somewhere in the engine, and so much current ran through the coil it got so hot it just melted. I wouldn't have thought that could happen, as I would have expected the very thin secondary wire to melt/break long before that kind of heat was generated. But maybe the secondary wire did break, but it failed short and melted into position or something equally silly.  Anyway, I don't want to put a new coil on only to have a similar thing happen to it, so I will give the electrics a good check for shorts.

Has anyone seen a coil fail like this before?  Anyone got any theories on how it could melt so badly?

Cheers.

I'm guessing it sat to close to a fire or something. If it shorted and started melting that would stop very quickly because it's doubtful it could still be sending spark to the plug to keep it running. No running equals no electricity going through it. Although there's always a first time. Remove the flywheel and check the points under the cover. I'd assume those would also burn if the coil melted from the electricity running through it. There isn't much involved there to effect the new coil so I wouldn't be concerned at all about that.

Yes, I'd be willing to send you parts. But, like you stated, shipping multiple packages isn't the best way so I'd suggest you dis-assemble that entire thing until we figure out exactly what all the parts are you need

It's one of those older style coils, where the plastic casing has reacted to an unknown chemical, we've seen they melted looking & gone sticky before. That one might be the worst we've seen though, as the top layer of windings are visible.

I guess one day we'll probably get a post mentioning someone using the wrong chemical to clean it and it ending up like that.

The 230V DC outlet was probably removed to prevent damage to appliances that require AC to operate, i.e those fitted with transformer. The AC outlet is on the other side.

Thanks heaps for the input guys. I hadn't considered a chemical, but its certainly a real possibility, probably more likely than it melting itself with a constant, too high a current.

OK - so it looks like the ball is now in my court. Time to start disassembling the little fella and see what's what, and make a list of parts required.

I need to head out to  Central Australia for a couple of weeks work in a few days, so the disassembly will be one of my jobs when I get back.

Again, thanks for the help, and I'll send more photos as the project progresses. I've worked on lots of Stationary Engines before - but never an Ohlsson and Rice - so I'd really value your collective thoughts.
