  1. All serviced and seems well. Thanks.
  2. Many thanks. Will pull it down and put results on thread.
  3. Hi just bought one of these, starts ok but lots of dark smoke on starting. Will pull it to bits the weekend, anyone had any major issues with these. Thanks.
  4. Thanks Stormin. Got myself a new Border Collie Tri-colour in the end, blinding dog and she can turn the lawn over. Regards Colin.
  5. Hi Lads. Have enjoyed this forum which has helped me rebuild old mowers etc which I bought and sold as a hobby. I have bought a BSA 650 cc Thunderbolt which was in boxes, totally in bits. It belonged to a guy who died in 2012 in Southend. I am going totally restore it and ignore mowers for a while. It might not be pedestrian machine but it will plough a field one day, I hope. Regards to everyone that has helped me. Colin.
  6. I recent visited the ALDI supermarket to buy some bits. I noticed that they were selling aerosols 400 ml in various colours at about £2.50 each. I bought a couple and left them in the garage for a rainy day. This week I used it for a project, it is extremely similar to dark green Hayter and much cheaper. Called Deco Style Metal Spray Paint made in Germany ( High Gloss ), made for ALDI. As the Forum is so quiet I thought I would share this.
  7. There is one on ebay listed recently under Hayter. Working order bidding at £150. Not mine.
  8. Thanks Wristpin, may help others in the future. Regards.
  9. Think I have solved it. Took two wheels off an old Hayterette. The are slightly bigger diameter but the bearing shaft is the same size. They have caged roller bearings with cones and fit well. I don't suppose these new plastic wheels are as strong as the old steel ones, will have to see.
  10. Plodding on with the restoration. front wheel bearings have disintegrated and the wheels are not much better. Do any more modern wheels fit, I am aware this is a heavy machine, however about 80% of the weight sits on the back wheels ( They are in good condition ). I was wondering if the Hayterette wheels may do the job. Thanks lads
  11. Wrong end of the stick, I have a decent Sterkins grass bag LOL
  12. That's the one, top left hand picture. No point me advertising a good grass box from one of these. LOL
  13. Yep a Sterkins, Looks like a Mountfield, expensive controls and a B & S Quattro. I thought the same as you, got it for £10, body rotten, good engine ready to go on one of my Hayterettes. I can't even find Sterkins on Google. We learn every day.
  14. Thanks Wristpin, spotted the one I want. Off to Ernest Doe's re part number 270447. This grand old machine is starting first time .Regards.
  15. Fitted another muffler from a new acquisition ( Sterkins 19" Rotary ) No smoke now thanks lads.
  16. Only left the cleaner in the tank for short while, then thoroughly rinsed it. Stormin, My filter is not like the one in your thread. Mine is 5HP and more like a larger version of the Sprint filter, similar shape. Unfortunately I cannot upload photos.Regards ..
  17. Cleaned the tank with brick cleaner, then paraffin. Filled the tank, put a drop of fuel in the carb and it actually started first time. It then ran off along my drive and hit my car before it stopped. These old beasts have some power. Has anyone got the B & S part number for the air filter please. Regards.
  18. Would seem to be oil in the exhaust. I have laid it down and got some out. How long shall I fog the neighbours till it drys out. LOL.
  19. My little Sprint engine came off a rusty Hayter and was running fine when it went into storage. Just fitted it into another machine. New filter, plug and oil. It started first time and there are plumes of white smoke pouring out filling the neighbours gardens. It sounds absolutely fine otherwise. I did fit a brand new pattern carb during the build. Could it be that the main jet is too large on this replacement carb. As I said white smoke. The oil is Classic SAE 30. Many thanks.
  20. Took the tank off as planned and serviced the carb, no issues there. The tank is full of rust and crap, the fluid that came out was more like syrup. I will rinse it round and hope the left over rubbish sinks to the bottom and stays there. I normally restore these machines but will sell this as a going concern as it is so solid.
  21. Many thanks for reply, you seem confident that I won't break the head gasket seal. I will do as you suggest. What did we do without forums and wise men. Regards Colin
  22. 5 HP B & S Hayter 21. I have give the engine a good clean and was going to get started on the carb. I normally find that I can remove the tank then the carb on most Hayters. I have released the rear tank bolt, but the front bracket appears to be welded to the tank and is fixed to the machine by two of the six head bolts. I don't want to start undoing head bolts at this stage. I can see three screws holding the carb to the tank, one I cannot even get to due to the throttle mechanism and linkages. Can someone please offer some practical advise so I can work on this carb please. Thank you in anticipation.
  23. Found the correct plug on WWW Autolite 255.
  24. Just adopted another solid barn find 5 HP Hayter 21. Been stood for years and years in the dry. First thing I did was to fit an on line strobe and have a fantastic spark. The poor little rusty plug is a Champion RCJB. I put some two stroke petrol down the carb and it fired up THIRD time. The tyres hold air, the drive belt to the blade screamed a bit like a car with a loose fan belt, no problems so far. Can someone give me the code and make for a replacement plug. I have got to restore this little lady. I have a replacement diaphragm I bought a few years ago, but cannot see where it fits yet, far too hot in the workshop. Regards Colin
  25. Will sort out measurements tomorrow. Just found a good video on Youtube. Just enter the following into their search engine. " Billy Goat Outdoor Vac KV Pro Series walk behind" You can freeze the footage or enlarge it. May help you a lot, however there are several different size bags on the market. The one on youtube is the same size as mine and can measure the bag if you still need. You will need a massive zip. If you can't access youtube, get one of the grandchildren to show you. Lot of good maintenance tips for any machine on there. Especially Hayter. Regards Colin
