Cleaned the tank with brick cleaner, then paraffin. Filled the tank, put a drop of fuel in the carb and it actually started first time. It then ran off along my drive and hit my car before it stopped. These old beasts have some power. Has anyone got the B & S part number for the air filter please. Regards.

Would seem to be oil in the exhaust. I have laid it down and got some out. How long shall I fog the neighbours till it drys out. LOL.

My little Sprint engine came off a rusty Hayter and was running fine when it went into storage. Just fitted it into another machine. New filter, plug and oil. It started first time and there are plumes of white smoke pouring out filling the neighbours gardens. It sounds absolutely fine otherwise.
I did fit a brand new pattern carb during the build. Could it be that the main jet is too large on this replacement carb. As I said white smoke. The oil is Classic SAE 30. Many thanks.

Took the tank off as planned and serviced the carb, no issues there. The tank is full of rust and crap, the fluid that came out was more like syrup. I will rinse it round and hope the left over rubbish sinks to the bottom and stays there. I normally restore these machines but will sell this as a going concern as it is so solid.

Many thanks for reply, you seem confident that I won't break the head gasket seal. I will do as you suggest. What did we do without forums and wise men. Regards Colin

5 HP B & S Hayter 21.
I have give the engine a good clean and was going to get started on the carb. I normally find that I can remove the tank then the carb on most Hayters. I have released the rear tank bolt, but the front bracket appears to be welded to the tank and is fixed to the machine by
two of the six head bolts. I don't want to start undoing head bolts at this stage. I can see three screws holding the carb to the tank, one I cannot even get to due to the throttle mechanism and linkages. Can someone please offer some practical advise so I can work on this carb please.
Thank you in anticipation.

Found the correct plug on WWW Autolite 255.

Just adopted another solid barn find 5 HP Hayter 21. Been stood for years and years in the dry. First thing I did was to fit an on line strobe and have a fantastic spark. The poor little rusty plug is a Champion RCJB. I put some two stroke petrol down the carb and it fired up THIRD time. The tyres hold air, the drive belt to the blade screamed a bit like a car with a loose fan belt, no problems so far. Can someone give me the code and make for a replacement plug. I have got to restore this little lady. I have a replacement diaphragm I bought a few years ago, but cannot see where it fits yet, far too hot in the workshop. Regards Colin

Will sort out measurements tomorrow. Just found a good video on Youtube. Just enter the following into their search engine. " Billy Goat Outdoor Vac KV Pro Series walk behind" You can freeze the footage or enlarge it. May help you a lot, however there are several different size bags on the market. The one on youtube is the same size as mine and can measure the bag if you still need. You will need a massive zip. If you can't access youtube, get one of the grandchildren to show you. Lot of good maintenance tips for any machine on there. Especially Hayter.

Thanks Stormin. This farmer was going to scrap it. Got it for the price of a Friday night out at the pub. Could not believe it when I saw the engine, an I/C.
-
Just rescued this from a local farmer who had it in his dry barn. Told me he had stored it for a few years, the engine is the Quantam 5 BHP I/C engine. Bag is really good. Took photos of it covered in years of dust ( which I can't post ). I have restored a couple of Hayter 21's and an Osprey and made good money. My question is..... Shall I sell as a barn find or clean it up and a lick of paint as a restoration. This engine has a clean-new air filter, clean oil and new B&S plug, it started 3rd pull with new petrol. The engine sounds great. They seem to be commanding silly money and I don't need this machine. Regards and have a nice weekend Potash : )

Thanks lads, I have a few to follow up now. Regards Colin

Looking for someone in East Anglia who can spoke a vintage wheel. The spokes are not available any more, they will have to be fabricated. We have the hub and vintage rim in good order. Looking for an old craftsman. I am near Southend, thanks for reading.

Glad you got it sorted. I always photograph linkages now with my mobile phone. I learn't the hard way, saying that some of these are on Youtube and quite helpful. Regards Colin

If you have whatsapp on your mobile phone I can photograph mine, or email you a picture tomorrow. I cannot post pictures on here.

Thank you, I have tested these tubes and have loads of pressure from what I can see. I will change the tubes in any event just in case. Thank you.

Hope I have this in the right section. I am looking at this for an old mate. It is just out of warranty. Would not start this seaon, spark plug he said ?? There is in fact no fuel getting to the plug at all. I cleaned the carb as per a You-tube short film. Still no fuel. I fitted a brand new carb which was bought for another job. Still have a totally dry spark plug. Help please and happy Easter.

Fitted the new diaphragm today, couple of pulls to prime it and off it went. Warmed it up and engaged the drive and off it went. Another one saved from the breakers. I think this still has the original spark plug. Will service it and advertise on ebay. I will bring my Hayter 21 home from the garden centre and see if she runs. A very clean 21 indeed.
-
Your explanation helps no end. A wealth of information. My wife always laughs when these old Hayters burst into life. Thanks again.

I have just bought one of these diaphragms ( 391681 ) for one of my spare Harrier 2. Got it from Ebay for £7.00 free delivery. Last one I bought from Ernest Does over the counter was £13.00. Even if the old diaphragm looks ok it probably is tired and prevents starting. An older thread but it may help someone.
-
Thanks Wristpin. Just ordered a new diaphragm as the fuel is not being pulled into the cylinder. Good spark and compression otherwise. Regards Potash

I have acquired my first Harrier 2 which is very tidy. The owner praised the machine, but said the drive may need freeing off. ?? I am busy finishing a Hayterette restoration, so I thought I would put the question to the forum. Are these similar drives to the Osprey or what am I up against. Many thanks.

I did take the disc off, fitted a boss from a smaller Hayter and an 18 " blade and off it went ? The disc had two coats of Hammerite on it before I fitted the new blades, may weigh a bit more. ?
-
I seem to have adopted a few Hayterettes of late. I have restored one and fitted a good sprint engine. The cutting disc fitted fine and it all looked very smart. Pulling the starter rope is a nightmare as the sheer weight of the cutting disc does not get enough momentum to fire up unless you are a heavy weight wrestler. Can any of you chaps suggest a good replacement modern engine that does not have the same issues. Many thanks.
PS If anyone needs a good solid Hayterette deck ( or two ) let me know.
