Herstmonceux collective sale, May 13th

Recommended Posts

A different venue for a South East Marts collective sale today, Lime End Farm at Herstmonceux near Hailsham in East Sussex

Not much vintage to see, young Harry was eyeing up the early Howard Gem.(photo 7)..

All I purchased was a breakfast roll and a cuppa (Yes Norm just the one)

Here's a few photos of what was there...

I did actually buy the Howard gem😀IMG_7122.thumb.JPG.d0316177760a50841f60c7377374362e.JPGIMG_7121.thumb.JPG.5389f06dc55566da028ed4f809b92554.JPG

What you've got there is a series 1 gem from 1946-1947 I would say from the position of the air cleaner.

It was listed in the sale catalogue as 1947

I wasn't far out then. From research late series 1's had the air filter location in the same place as

series 2's and the last of them came with "The Gem" embossed on the chain cover as well.

I've just looked it up. I bet the serial number of this machine is G4497?There are photos on my website of it.

i was offered it a few months back but the seller wanted a lot more than Harry paid for it.

Yes I think it is g4497 from what I can make out. And that looks like the same exact machine as mine with the yellow tape around the starting handle and missing the magneto cover.

And the green handle grips. I'm sure from memory he was looking for close to £500. You've got one of the very last series 1 's there.Series 2 production started at G4800. It still has the cutout for the air filter on gearbox and the mounting point in the series 2 location. The chain cover has the gem on it which the guy swore was original and looking at the matching patina,he is probably right.

A very interesting example from the change over period that definitely needs saving. Let me know your plans, if they're to keep it then next time I speak to my contact I'll get the factory records checked if you like?
