pmackellow 2,738 #1 Posted May 13, 2017 A different venue for a South East Marts collective sale today, Lime End Farm at Herstmonceux near Hailsham in East Sussex Not much vintage to see, young Harry was eyeing up the early Howard Gem.(photo 7).. All I purchased was a breakfast roll and a cuppa (Yes Norm just the one) Here's a few photos of what was there... 3 sten, S1g and Stormin reacted to this

pmackellow 2,738 #8 Posted May 14, 2017 It was listed in the sale catalogue as 1947 1 S1g reacted to this

From research late series 1's had the air filter location in the same place as series 2's and the last of them came with "The Gem" embossed on the chain cover as well. 2 harryt and pmackellow reacted to this
S1g 579 #10 Posted May 14, 2017 I've just looked it up. I bet the serial number of this machine is G4497?There are photos on my website of it. i was offered it a few months back but the seller wanted a lot more than Harry paid for it. 1 harryt reacted to this
S1g 579 #11 Posted May 14, 2017 heres a photo off my site. The guy trying to sell it claimed he was only the second owner from new. Got to admit it did look a very genuine machine. 2 harryt and pmackellow reacted to this
harryt 281 #12 Posted May 14, 2017 Yes I think it is g4497 from what I can make out. And that looks like the same exact machine as mine with the yellow tape around the starting handle and missing the magneto cover. 1 S1g reacted to this

I'm sure from memory he was looking for close to £500. You've got one of the very last series 1 's there.Series 2 production started at G4800. It still has the cutout for the air filter on gearbox and the mounting point in the series 2 location. The chain cover has the gem on it which the guy swore was original and looking at the matching patina,he is probably right. A very interesting example from the change over period that definitely needs saving. Let me know your plans, if they're to keep it then next time I speak to my contact I'll get the factory records checked if you like?
