Easy I thought. All the sprints I have worked on have a nut holding on the flywheel. This one must be older as the starter mechanism is fitted over the flywheel. I have pullers but cannot see how it comes off so I can change the key.

I fitted the boss but not the blade as yet. Have put my tools away for the next couple of days.

Must admit I did clump on the blade boss, would that have sheared the flywheel key. ?? Many thanks

I took the 375 engine that was running well off of a rusty deck and fitted it onto a new deck. I also fitted a brand new carb that I had. It started once then cut out, now it is kicking back on the pull start like an old BSA motorbike, almost smashed my knuckles to bits on the recoil. I thought the timing was factory set. It was fine before removal. Info appreciated.  

Hi S1G. I currently have a Hayter 21 which is solid and all there. Two Hayterettes that run well. One Hayterette with no spark and a Mountfield auto. Yesterday I was given two petrol Hedge Trimmers, one Mac Allister which now runs great and a McCulloch Superlite which looks almost  new. They can all wait till the seasons are right. There are some strange prices on the Hayterettes on ebay, they can keep dreaming. Great hobby. The ebayers make me laugh when they state that they have not tried to start the engine. LOL

Running fine on the carb lever, no issues whatsoever.

As you may have gathered from my posts, I restore mowers etc for a hobby. I have bought for £50 and turned an Osprey into £300 in a few weeks. The money helps but I get satisfaction doing these in my retirement. Bit shocked to find two modern non running Hayters just sold on ebay for £4.20 pence. There are two rough cuts ( 21's ) on there at the moment for £39 each. Obviously the time of year is causing the slump. Wish I had some storage room as these mowers are normally snapped up during the rest of the year. I get offered tractors and machines from local farmers, but again not enough room. No questions here, just thought I would add to a quiet forum this time of year. Merry Christmas. Colin.

This runs and blows well, BUT  is blowing out engine oil. I suspect a crankshaft seal ?? Shall I throw it down the tip or can it be repaired without a load of aggravation. many thanks Colin 

Many thanks. It would seem to be the unmolested engine. I have two with the same problem, so it will be a learning curve. Many thanks.

I have an old hayterette from the sixties. I have no spark and need to look behind the flywheel. I have never had to remove one of these. Advice / diagram's would be helpful. I have cleaned the flywheel and set the airgap, very weak belt from the HT lead. Help please and merry Xmas. 

Just a quick question. Just rebuilt the engine. The drive shaft has two slots on the drive shaft for the woodruff key, do I use the one nearest the engine. It has a self drive boss fitted.

I am going to try and run it on automatic throttle and see how it cuts, any advice on this would be welcome as i have just bought two more of these great little mowers. Thanks for replies.

Some of you may remember that I have fitted a sprint 375 engine to a newly restored Hayterette. I want to use manual throttle in lieu of the automatic rev sysytem. If I fit the throttle cable will I have to disconnect the small springs connected to the fan paddle. ?? Please excuse

my terminology for some parts. Regards Potash.

Whilst doing the garden decking I managed to get some decking oil over my new Indian Sandstone Patio. She is not amused. I have tried the power washer, was to no avail. Any ideas please. 

Thanks lads. Well I got the Hayterette up on my bench today. I undid the bolt holding the blade disc and it freed up well ( Lucky me ). Engine out of the ally body and stored. Took the engine out of the Sovereign, removed the drive pully and it slotted in a treat. Could not believe how well it went. As the new engine is so good I am going to bare metal respray the body and respray the motor. the wheels will go in the dishwasher when the wife is out ( they are plastic rims ). Just need to sort out the modern lever to shut the engine down on the handlebars via the cable. Any advice would help on that one.  Sorry can't do photos. Hope to give this a new lease of life.

Hi Nigel. I am trying to establish the threads used by B & S in general. I have boxes of new BSA, Enfield, AJS and Metric bolts, but nothing seems to fit these mowers. I appreciate the replies.

My old Hayterette engine has give up the ghost. I have a Sovereign self drive with a 375 B & S engine. Will the engines inter-change. What thread are these B & S engines as in the ancillary parts, who supplies them ? Many thanks. 

Hi and welcome. Last year I did a bare metal restoration on an Osprey which went to good use somewhere in Devon. I have a solid Hayter 21 and an old Hayterette, the latter would like a new engine, I will keep an eye out for one. They are sitting in my greenhouse

waiting for harvest to finish. I thought retirement was supposed to give me time on my hands. Keep up the good work. I would buy all the old rough cutters if I had time. Regards.

Well found the problem which I thought I would share it with everyone. Pampas leafs had wrapped itself round the drive shaft above the blade. It was so tight it acted like a brake causing engine issues. Took ten minutes to unwrap the leaves. Now running fine.
