C-101plowerpower 548 #1 Posted March 14, 2015 hi all, i've got myself some east german equipment. a VEB fimag generator with a VEB cunewalder diesel engine type 1 vd 8/8 sl. it doesn't run at the moment since there are some parts floating about in the sump very little compression and missing a few parts. all in all a nice project to do when i'm bored. oh and since you lot are a bit pic hungry here's some 3 Anglo Traction, Ian and nigel reacted to this

C-101plowerpower 548 #3 Posted March 14, 2015 looks an interesting piece of kit, how old is it? the year on the engine is '81, so about 34 years old
the showman 4,074 #4 Posted March 14, 2015 Wow, its not what I expected, looks to be an interesting project and a bit on the heavy side, will look forward to updates
Ian 2,417 #5 Posted March 14, 2015 That should keep you busy for a while Koen.. Which bit's are loose in the sump?
C-101plowerpower 548 #6 Posted March 14, 2015 Some bits of the regulator, took most of em out before the pic
C-101plowerpower 548 #7 Posted March 15, 2015 got some more work done on the engine today, found out why bits of the governer were floating about in the sump. the culprit is this little piece here: that little piece was behind the big gear you see in these pics: when we got those things out we thought lets see why there is no compression so we put some oil down the bore. still no improvement so off came this piece then this piece: which doesn't look too healthy and off came this lot it soon became clear why there was such little compression, the piston rings were stuck right in the piston as can be seen here: the piston pin(is that the right word for the damn thing?) was almost completely stuck in the con rod, turns out there are a lot of burrs on there where the previous guy that worked on it hit it with something anyway time for a cuppa and a to not get too angry at that previous guy that's all for now 1 nigel reacted to this
bowtiebutler956 166 #8 Posted March 15, 2015 Koen, I learned a long time ago that some people have no business working on engines, as they just don't care, and take no pride in they're work. I'm sure you'll get it back in order again. Matt
Anglo Traction 1,016 #9 Posted March 15, 2015 Yeah, What Matt says. Good project machine there Koen. Like the Engine Drawings/Prints. I'll be watching your progress assuming you plan to get it back to A1 'Juice Generating' condition .
C-101plowerpower 548 #10 Posted March 15, 2015 Yeah, What Matt says. Good project machine there Koen. Like the Engine Drawings/Prints. I'll be watching your progress assuming you plan to get it back to A1 'Juice Generating' condition . if the genny part is still good then yes that's the plan, if that part is shot than i might be searching for a wheel horse to put it in 1 nigel reacted to this
Anglo Traction 1,016 #11 Posted March 15, 2015 Yeah, would look cool fitted in a tractor with that blue paint cleaned off the Crankcase and polish it up shiny
Stormin 4,458 #12 Posted March 15, 2015 You are having fun, Koen. The proper name for the piston pin as you called it, is gudgeon pin.
C-101plowerpower 548 #13 Posted March 15, 2015 You are having fun, Koen. The proper name for the piston pin as you called it, is gudgeon pin. ah i thought it was something like that just didn't know for sure, thanks
the showman 4,074 #14 Posted March 15, 2015 Blimey Koen you've had a good day and made lots of progress. You never know what you're gonna find in these old engines, would have been worse if it was full of water
C-101plowerpower 548 #15 Posted March 15, 2015 i've had another look at it this evening and when i was turning the crank with the mounted pully it struck me, i still have one of those thingies you put in a drill and put a socket on. so i made this the socket on the end goes here: now i spin it at a reasonable speed and we were able to get it to produce 3 whole volts, sound a bit week but atleast we know the genny still produces "juice" now, here's some pic's of the genny part
bowtiebutler956 166 #16 Posted March 15, 2015 The inside of the generator still looks very clean! Glad to hear its still making voltage. Matt
Wristpin 400 #17 Posted March 15, 2015 Koen, I learned a long time ago that some people have no business working on engines, as they just don't care, and take no pride in they're work. I'm sure you'll get it back in order again. Matt Amazing what you find, believe it or not this engine was starting and running but a bit smoky! Book says ring gap of 6 - 11 thou: these gaps more like 250 thou or quarter of an inch!!
C-101plowerpower 548 #18 Posted March 29, 2015 quick update, I haven't made a lot of progress, pretty much none actually, but i ordered something that will hopefully prove to be quite useful with ordering parts and putting it back together i think it is quite a find, an enlish repair manual for a east german engine that's all for now 1 bowtiebutler956 reacted to this
