mattblack 76 #1 Posted November 24, 2018 I picked this engine up on ebay back in the summer as a winter project. After cleaning and setting the points and changing the HT lead and plug I got a good spark (much to my surprise, was sure the coil would be dead) so I have started stripping it for restoration. As you can see one thing I need is the air filter oil bath, however all the pictures I've found of other engines show it held on by 2 metal strips, rather than the wire retainer mine has. Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? I will take some pictures of where I am at now and post them up.
mattblack 76 #2 Posted November 25, 2018 Engine has obviously had some attention in the past, bore still looks good with no wear ridge. Someone cared enough to do this brazed repair to the pulley, maybe to to get a bit more life out of it when it was a working engine? ...on the other hand, whoever made the new seals for the fuel cap and air filter only had cork effect vinyl floor covering to hand, and their teeth for tools. Valves look OK. Is this the date code? (IE March 1958) 1 Fix'em all reacted to this

Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? Suspect the Carb is a B10/1 or B10/2?. The mk15 was introduced in 1953 and continued to be made well past the switch to manufacturing India in the mid 60s. I suspect your Carb/Engine is of the 50s period and the flat clip design was used on later examples (probably cheaper and only needed one style of adaptor for several filter designs). It is possible the clear plastic filter cup version style was unchanged and would fit early (50s) and later (60s) versions of retainer?. Just a quick search of a B10/2 entry into google produces loads of pics showing later clips that are screwed into the Adaptor part, so I expect your adaptor won't take screwed clips. I suggest you contact Mr P Childs at Meetens giving your engine Model and serial numbers and most importantly an image/dimensions of your Air Filter arrangement to help him. If anyone has a replacement, he will have it. You could ask him to check if the Part number V1272D Filter Cup is what you are after, as it looks identical. Lastly, if you have no luck, your only option is to use a later adaptor on the carb (known as an Oil Bath Air Filter Cover) and use the later bowl/clip design or Filter type. Engine looks good internally. Always a good sign to find a re bore and no 'wear lip'. It shows signs of a proper full rebuild.
mattblack 76 #4 Posted November 26, 2018 Thanks for that, I was beginning to think no one else could see my thread but me... I suppose the wire retainer being earlier would tie in with the 1958 build date? I have heard Meetens are very good for Villiers parts, but I can't see anywhere on their website to order online, do you have to ring/email them? I picked up another little project today, will start another thread about it shortly.

mattblack 76 #6 Posted November 30, 2018 Had a week off work, so between changing the servo on my van, changing the oil and filters, pruning the plum tree at the allotment and picking up my MK12 engine I did a bit more... Stripped the paint off the tank and cowling, is the light green an undercoat or the original colour? (cowling is dark green inside) Tank will need a clean inside, a few nuts, some brake cleaner and a good shake should do it. Sump cleaned out (oil was clean, but there was a bit of sludge in it) Can't upload anymore photos in the this post so I will continue tomorrow... 1 Fix'em all reacted to this
Wristpin 400 #7 Posted December 1, 2018 Quote Had a week off work, so between changing the servo on my van, changing the oil and filters, pruning the plum tree at the allotment and picking up my MK12 engine I did a bit more... Tut tut ! Quote "If you prune during damp weather, the plum tree is at risk of silver leaf disease. Use pruning paint on cut branches to prevent disease. The best time to prune plums is early spring or early summer during a dry day. Never prune in winter (to avoid silver leaf disease)."
mattblack 76 #8 Posted December 1, 2018 Oh well, it has survived about 10 years of me hacking away at it in November, and in my defence it's really the O/H's allotment... Anyway, back to the important stuff... I was in 2 minds whether to strip the engine down further, but as I want to give the block a good clean and check the bearing shells I decided to at least take the piston/conrod out. Then I decided to take the crank out so I could change the oil seal, which was when the fun started... the bearing stayed on the crank, so it wouldn't come out the other side without taking the camshaft out... which wouldn't come out without taking the governor out... Piston rings rings look good, I hope my piston ring compressor goes down small enough. Shells and crank are good as well. Block ready for a good clean and paint. Will sort out a shopping list for Meetens next... 1 Stormin reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #9 Posted December 1, 2018 Looks like someone's done it up at some time and it hasn't done much since.
mattblack 76 #10 Posted December 23, 2018 Got a bit more done over the last few days. Head decoked and valves ground. Mag backplate cleaned up and new oil seal fitted. Block and head all cleaned up and painted. 1 Stormin reacted to this

mattblack 76 #13 Posted January 20, 2019 Made a bit more progress. The carb was a bit crusty inside. looked like it may have had water sitting in it but it cleaned up OK. coming back together. Cleaned up the tank and cowling and filled the dents. 1 Anglo Traction reacted to this

Anglo Traction 1,016 #15 Posted February 17, 2019 Nice work you're doing here. Should be good for long service when you're done. Did you ever source the Air Filter Bowl you mentioned at the start of this topic?. Are you planning to have this engine powering something, or just to run it as is?. Yes, I got the filter bowl and other parts from Meetens, it looks like same bowl is used for both fixing types. I may get something to drive in due course, but I will be happy if it runs at all... Longer term It would be nice to put a little collection of different Villiers 4-strokes together for display, but I'm not really a 'club' person... I was supposed to pick up another (non - Villiers) project yesterday but my van had other ideas, so watch this space.
mattblack 76 #17 Posted February 27, 2019 Well, I'm calling this (sort of) finished... I screwed it to a bit of scrap MDF as a temporary measure to run it, and much to my surprise it started on the third kick. However, it was 'hunting' badly and after playing with the governor setting with no real improvement I called it a day. Yesterday I had a closer look at the carb and checked the manual re: setting and discovered that the mixture screw is missing! Looking at the 'before' photos it was missing when I got the engine. I have emailed Meteens so hopefully I will be able to get it running properly. If so I will try to post up a video. 2 Stormin and Fix'em all reacted to this

mattblack 76 #20 Posted February 28, 2019 Thanks for the kind words, there are a couple of bits where the paint coverage is poor (probably didn't have my glasses on!) and some petrol splashed out of the cap when I ran it (my fault, it wasn't tightened right up) so I've touched the tank up with a brush. But overall I'm pleased with it and have enjoyed doing it.
mattblack 76 #21 Posted March 6, 2019 I re-did the bits with the poor paint as I knew it would bug me, and I couldn't resist the decals when I saw them on ebay... NOW I'm calling it finished.
