    Thanks all.
Listen, guys. This is your British product and it's supposed to look like your factory made it. It's supposed to be original :)

Slowly, slowly forward. Now there will be mounting the gearbox and engine

    Tomas,

when did you mail me (restorationdecals)? My son usually replies immediately, orders usually take a few weeks due to other commitments. We've just done a print run last week....

    thanks

it was straight when i got it, i did sharpen it and use it for a good while until the weld on the wonky bit snapped - at which point i had to give up. The deck/mechanism was in good condition, and being a rare 32" contra, the buyer who seems well mechanically minded should have it going again in no time.

so in a twist of fate, I ended up selling this machine on. Main reason was I didn't have the knowledge to fix the cutting deck to a safe standard, and didn't want to throw money at it for someone else to repair it when so many other machines come up for minimal cash.

One of the blades was home made, welded straight to the spindle. I wasn't comfortable getting a proper blade welded straight on, and couldn't find a replacement spindle/mount.

I found myself a T1100 with 36" deck instead, which is near identical to the W11, but had larger tyres, a 36" deck which is easy to source parts for, and was in generally slightly better condition. It cost me a fair chunk more than the gazelle, but I feel it will save me in the long run. My dad has a T1100 too with 36" deck, so means we can trade parts.

Guess thats the end of this thread, will start a new one for the T1100 once i have made a load of progress and can post it one go

Hi, that's a later Gazelle model. Possibly a Mk4 Gazelle (first model after the white grille). Looks good, look forward to seeing more posts.

hi all, new guy here. Recently bought this W11 gazelle on a lockdown whim. Was bought as a runner, but with faulty gearbox struggling to engage gears/reverse. Engine was spluttering, & deck isn't in great condition. Chap said it came with his house in 1991 from previous owners, and he has been using it ever since until it stopped reversing and couldn't get it fixed. Comes with 32" cutting deck (rotten but free moving) & rear wheel driven grass collector (working fine). If anyone could tell me the version i have here, that would be useful?

Firstly i needed to make it drive. Inspected the gear linkages and found that the swivel where the shifting rod attaches to the box was siezed, so as it swung, the rod was bending. It had bent so much it no longer reached reverse. As i was disassembling it the rod snapped. My solution was to cut off where the thread started, dye it to 1.25mm pitch (and retap the swivel - were both 1mm pitch), then using some stainless steel bits rebuild it all. Now shifts into all gears without fault. Managed to snap the actual gear handle off too, so had to weld that back on too, plus lost the spring for the lift up reverse action. Not an issue to me.

Next i looked at the engine. It was in a sorry state, covered in crap, and hadn't been serviced in this century. I stripped and cleaned the carb and air filter/box (looked like it had been dipped in grease), put in a new sparkplug, flushed petrol tank (sediment in bottom), and have started to clean the rest up.... starts and runs beautifully smooth now.

this is far as i've got. Engine needs to be properly cleaned with scrubbing brushes which will then also have the black trim bits resprayed. I'm working on the deck currently, replacing blades, patching the deck, then will paint in something bombproof.

Otherwise going for a different look, breaking tradition. I'm going to be stripping down the old paint and respraying gloss black, with metalwork gunmetal silver, putting LED headlights on, and chrome effect wheel rims. A friend is currently plasma cutting out some custom signage for it as i will lose the stickers. Figure its value is mainly in the fact it starts and cuts, any preservation is a blessing over its current state.

    Updates to follow....

    Bit more done this afternoon.

Trailer towing attachment done. Just needs tow ball fitted.

Frame work for the drawbar. Lucky I found the U clamps. The bar had to go there to clear the casting. Couldn't bolt it on as no room to get a nut on underneath. Only just managed to get the U clamp nuts on.

Might not look much, but much  putting on and taking off done.

I need it off the bench now and behind a tractor. Then I can work out draw bar position, height etc. I'll have to wait till one of the grandsons visit to give me a hand.

Been a little while, but I thought it was time I knocked the dust of this little project. Towing the Billy Goat and trailer, due to the nature of the ground I mow, was always going to be rather awkward. So I've been thinking of a slightly different idea.

Made a start yesterday and the Billy Goat ended up like this.

Now I don't want to make any alterations to the Billy Goat. If this idea doesn't work, I want to put it back as was.  Some head scratching and ratching about to see what was lying around, I've ended up with this.

The side bars are the second pair. The first ones I made I decided were too short.

       To  be continued...….

Hooked things up this morning to see how things looked.

Fired up the Goat and threw a latex glove under it. Shot it nicely in to the back of the trailer. Also blew it out again.  By 'eck it's got some waft.
So what next. Need something along the lines of a silage trailer, methinks. So what's next?

Done a bit of clearing up for a neighbour. Cut a some sieves down a couple of weeks ago, with the C-81 and finger bar. Today my neighbour and I gathered them up ready to burn.
Thought I'd give the Black Horse some exercise, as it hadn't been run for a couple of months at least. Was rather reluctant to start, but eventually we went next door with trailer in tow. In the field the Black Horse started acting up. Would run and idle fine, but if shut down would be hesitant to restart. Took it home and got the Sears/Roper for trailer duty.
Lost count of the trailer loads, but quite a few. Photo's of last load.

Very cool!   That specific model of Bolens is one of my all time favorites. I missed out on a nice one while I was in Minnesota. Great to see it running so well and getting out to use!

Good work, Joseph! I'd have just ploughed up the grass. Might not have gone down well with the females of the family though.

My mum and sister wanted some raised beds made for the garden. As we are still in lockdown we had to use materials we already had. We created a video of building them which features lots of Bolens action with the 1962 Bolens Ride-a-matic

While looking around for things to do, I spied a little toolbox on a workshop shelf. Now all three Wheel Horses have toolboxes fitted to their fenders, but not the Sears/Roper. I've been reluctant to drill holes in it's fenders.
Looking at the back end, I noticed a couple of bolts securing the seat mount sticking out with some thread showing. Just enough to fasten something on.
So yesterday the toolbox got a rub down and a coat of primer. Followed by a couple of top coats of mat black. I've no gloss.

      This morning I fitted it.

Hi all,   I would like to test the waters regarding the Ransomes MG2 Flywheel.   I am aerospace design engineer by trade and run a small engineering company in the UK with several CNC machines. Although I am an MG5 owner, it has come to my attention that the MG2 flywheel is prone to failure. Neil Jarret has kindly posted me one to inspect, and with his knowledge I am pleased to say that we have an accurate 3D CAD model and engineering technical drawing.   I am therefore proposing running a small batch of these, however, before I do so I would like to gauge the level of interest & commitment from the market place. The last thing I want is shelf full of MG2 flywheels on my hands for years to come. So, if you are interested, then please post or comment below. I will then take your details and add you to the list to effectively 'reserve' one for you.   Flywheels will be manufactured from EN8 Steel and Clear Zinc Passivated.   Price: £194.95 each.   All items are manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Finally got around to getting the "Roper 38" tiller working, modified the hitch pickup mountings to match the 3 point on my C121. My 3 point was originally going to be hydraulic, but getting the geometry right without the whole lot hanging too far back was awkward, due to the under seat fuel tank. So I used a winch instead. This is rated at 2000 lbs with a " snatch block " pulley mounted on the lift arm cross brace, the tiller weighs around 250lbs. I've taken a few photos, but only after everything was fitted.

Any leads would be gratefully appreciated, just to save me messing about with them I am looking at 8" lambretta split rims at the moment. Kevin has said he may have some bits to give me a head start, any thing to keep me from having to decorate a bedroom
