O&Rs look cool on those little mowers.
Good to see everyone building stuff with them too. If you can't find it, make one!

After seeing CNews fantastic mower project it got me thinking...

I had a spare O&R engine in stock and a very sad looking Nash Boadicea mower with a tired JAP 34 on it...

It's not finished yet, just a bit of fun using what bits I have in stock...

HEY, that looks familiar. Certainly an interesting tool.
Hope you don't need help on assembly as it's been a long time since taking it apart to ship.

Pulled the wheels off to do some more work on the little bike. Here's the divot in the tire from the first video when it didn't have enough friction. It doesn't look that deep in the pic but it shaved off a good amount.
Too bad it didn't create any smoke or I would do a video of burning out that whole tire.

Ok, here’s the little project I’ve been working on for the last couple weeks.  I’ve been wanting to make a small lawn mower/trimmer with an O&R and I had a nice 133 military engine that needed to find a home.  Thanks to Terry@Just O&R, he was able to hook me up with the perfect vintage mower - it was exactly what I was hoping for. This one is a 14” Sensation, perfect size and design style for the O&R.

It’s not 100% done yet but I couldn’t put off getting some photos posted. I’m still working on the actual trimmer concept and plan to go with more of a weed eater head set up instead of a mower blade.  I plan to use the starter cup off a vintage Pioneer chainsaw and drill three holes so I can pass through some pre-cut Trimmer lines with end-stops. I’ll figure out a good way to secure the cup to the spindle shaft. I also added a stop button to the back plate similar to a few other O&R tools I have.  I’m also finalizing a short throttle cable, doesn’t really need one but thought it might be nice. After a lot of hunting I ended up finding a cast aluminum boat chair pedestal that made the perfect adapter plate to mount the engine to the mower. I also had to swap out the normal Type 133 mount with one that has a couple more inches in height. This was needed to get the right clearance for the gas tank.  Just a note, the early style Drillgine gas tanks don’t mount to the newer style engines and I had to make a couple slight mods to the casting on the case to get all the clearances to fit right.

Here is the before and after...

Got the fan all cleaned up and did the carb but then just wanted to see, hear and feel it run. Still need to do a yellow tank and the fuel line

Just decided to work on this generator today it been slow here I guess because of fathers day. Thought I would get her running
before I set it on the shelf wiring looked pretty good . I'm not going to take the generator off of the engine and mess up the wires.
the rest looks pretty good .

Good advise, I don't use the gasket punch kit very often and didn't at work much either (I used to repair train electronics, occasionally a new case seal or some custom mica insulators needed making).

I've now made some more of the carb gaskets, without cutting them out before punching the holes. I was previously using a piece of chipboard that came in the packaging of a well known flatpack bookcase. I've now found another piece as the other one was rather worn out from punching cylinder & induction gaskets.

Here are some from the batch I have made, with a third sheet of thinner gasket paper to get the correct thickness to match the original pair of red gaskets used between the induction housing & carb. I haven't checked yet but the thinner one maybe similar to the single gasket used on the early O&R engines.

It's my opinion it would be fine with the new gasket material. Especially for the little one between the carb body and diaphragm as the thickness shouldn't effect anything as long as it's not too thin. The only issue with the others could be the governor touching the exhaust manifold but using 3 instead of 2 gaskets should cure that. Thicker would be better than thinner for that spot.
I've used thick cork gasket material in the past for the carb to case gasket and the engine ran fine

Sorry David, I missed this but here they are.
I don't remember ever seeing this style recoil decal before. Nothing seems any different to make it an "Industrial" engine but it hasn't been disassembled either. And not sure I'm even going to since it has great compression now, the flywheel and all the grooves in the plate are clean. It has definitely been run before but with no build up of debris on the flywheel from sucking in air, it indicates a low hour run time. Think it just needs some overall cleaning and the carb done. The plan is to just clean it up a bit and let it fly it's character as it was used by the LAFD. I was going to paint the grills as the chrome on them isn't the best but leaving it in it's working clothes is the best option for this one IMO.

Has anyone had the red carb gaskets laser cut?

I've had a request for these, so I've had a go at making some using my gasket punch kit & a craft knife.
These are my first attempt with some of the cellulose fibre gasket material (slightly thinner than the original), I'm also a bit limited by the sizes of the punches for some of the holes.

I don't have any of the red gasket material, but I suspect it would split too easily when punching the holes due to the thin sections.

Couldn't resist the urge to go out and tinker again after seeing Terry @JUST O&R on that skateboard. That was great stuff and glad we finally wore you down to go out and give it a try.
So, Got'er some more friction with a big azz spring and some more tire pressure. It won't carry me up the slight incline that well but gets moving going down.  The biggest thing I noticed was my ever increasing bald spot.
The ball's in someone else's court now!
