Lawn ranger engine transplant

Recommended Posts

Some of you will remember that the Tecumseh V70 engine expired on my sons ranger after 40 years. The con rod has snapped and knowing they aren't that reliable (though 40 years isn't bad) I've chosen what I trust to be a better replacement.

Here's the Ranger in happier times...

and now on my new Ranger maintenance station - my knees are getting too old to crawl on the floor. Parts can be stored underneath out of the way and it's on wheels :)

here's the new Engine ready to drop in, needs the pulley swapping over and a small mod to the chassis to make it fit. I will need to change the ignition switch and fit a solenoid. At least this one has a reasonable charge stator - so we can run some lights!

So another project to do in between C4, Bendy, Difflock, moving house and work :o

Well...

We lifted the engine and split it :o

It's about what I expected. The con rod snapped and instead of going through the casing it hit the camshaft and snapped it in two :(

Whilst the bore and piston look ok and there's no real damage to the casting I think it's going to be parted. I've got £45 in the starter and £30 in the carb, so might be looking to get some money back.

Chris - 90% certain the cowl is yours...

Look's like a good replacement Mark. Like the High work Platform, but if your getting too old for crawling around on the floor :o , what chance have I/we over 60's got :yankchain: .

Been on holiday for a week, and got severe horse withdrawal symptoms :D

Within 30 mins of getting home, here was my first job, removing the old pulleys from the techy

The shaft and keyways are identical between techy and Briggs

With four fresh holes, the 8hp Briggs drops straight in

Well... Remarkably, despite the engines being different makes, sizes and 30 years between them. The original exhaust actually fit and went through the hole in the chassis :D Gawd knows how that worked...

A quick mod to the heat shield and all looked good.

A bit of fuel and it started first time :)

And within an hour all was together and child no3 was back in action

If your grass is getting to long.

I could bring my new sickle bar  down and cut it.

That's when I have painted it.
