Unfortunately it is a risk and many of us have been there. Many years ago before on- line auctions we went to a collective machinery sale where there were two identical Ariens rear tine cultivators in consecutive lots . One had no compression and the other felt reasonable . Bought the first for not a lot of money and were given the option on the second for the same sum. Well, the one with no compression had no piston and the other one a lump of sponge rubber on top of the piston but no piston rings!
Can still laugh about it!
Going back to your issue, how was it described?
Re reading the ad it was a bit vague, however the position that the photographs were taken from must of been deliberate to hide the issues. It's not something that I'm going to get too upset over, just chuck it down to experience, soak it in freeing oil and leave in the shed until one day a doner engine turns up.
Going back to your experience I know somebody who purchased a line of about 20 belle cement mixers in auction, going on the feel of good compression. Every single one had a piece of sponge on top of the piston.
I'm not sure what engine it's for but take a look at L&S Engineers website. They do a lot of engine spares dating back years and the older staff members are very helpful at trying to match parts so you find they've got something that can be adapted.
They won't fit Alan but it seems the Chinese are doing copies of these carbs now so I would have a look on the bay, cos good original ones are like rocking horse poo poo
Hi do you have any links as I can only see up to 9 hp ones, or do these fit? I've been wondering if anyone knows if the carb bowl would fit off one of these. I won't know till Monday when the machine is back at my yard but I think the main body of the carb is there, but no bowl, or air filter bits.
Hi I'm looking for a horizontal crank 11 hp Briggs if any one can help please( I believe a 10 hp and 13hp may do as well). I particuarly need the carb and air filter assembly but will buy either just these parts or a complete engine. I'm in Hereford but collection from anywhere in the uk isn't a problem.
they won't be ready this year but I'll look into it for next year thanks.
I know I shouldn't but I somehow just ended up buying this older example. It should be arriving the end of the week. I believe the engine is an 11hp briggs and stratton, the carb is missing some parts and maybe the air filter. Can any one help with any spares please?
Lovely job. Better than new. Well done and a nice line up.
Thanks for the compliment, but I wouldn't say they are better than new, but just as good as I'm able to get them. Hopefully there will soon be a beaver 2 to add to the line, then I'll just need to find a show that will accept something like these as most don't seem to have a plant section.
Had a bit of a disaster with the chasis. The other day I sprayed it up and it looked great,so I left it to dry. When I went to the unit today to take some shots, to my horror I saw that the paint had reacted badly with something! As I've used enamel I'm going to have to let it set for a few weeks before rubbing it down.
Doing some research I've discovered that the Solite was a machine that jcb purchased the design rights to. The same chap who designed it apparently designed the panther 101 pack(after selling jcb the rights then competing agaisnt them) that I've got. Having a close look at them today I can see the similarities. A lot of the parts used would simply interchange.

Thought I'd investigate the blow on the exhaust. - Was a bit shocked to see how much was missing
under the chrome cover as it genuinely sounded like a very small hole! I do have a slightly better one
in my store, not perfect but should suffice until I can turn up a couple of better condition ones.
The Paint is now dry on the chasis, I fitted the end caps and tried to fit the wheels, unfortunately
they were too long for the axle so had to be thinned down with the grinder.
The tin work off the engine has been soaked in paint stripper, then run over with a flap disc,
now ive got the time consuming job of filling all the dents and pitting, still its easier than stripping the
Nylon coating off the jcb's.
