Fishnuts2 reacted to K-TRON in 60 year old Comet C-SAW still running strong
My Comet C-SAW has turned 60 years of age, and I thought that there would be no better present for it than to finally install the new diaphragm gasket I picked up from Wallfish a year and a half ago in Worcester. The old diaphragm was hard and brittle and simply beyond use. I was able to limp it along these last few months by removing it, soaking it in light machine oil, and reinstalling it wet. With the new diaphragm installed the little O&R started up and ran just perfectly. You can hear the little air vane governor working as it powers its way through some wood I had laying about.

This rather nice collection of engines and spares arrived today, three complete engines and loads of bits, plus some useful literature and dealer tags...

Engines now on the display with the others.

I’m calling this one done for now until I can get the fuel mix and chain oil decals replicated.  The recoil decal is on now and I flipped the chain.

This is kind of what I was thinking as well. I have the decal and nothing to lose.

I haven’t attached it yet but here’s how it would look.  I cut a small section of the border so it fits more like a typical decal.

Got the recoil done and all back together. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get it to run. It’s got spark and it sort of sputtered a couple times with the choke but never really got any signs of life at mid choke or run. Sort of seems like it’s not getting fuel for some reason. I mounted a temporary syringe of fuel above the carb and that didn’t work either, even after priming the carb several times. Strange, always a bummer after doing a complete rebuild...  walking away for now and will try again another day...

Ok, so I just couldn’t leave it alone. It always drives me crazy not being able to get‘em going so I decided to give it another go.  I cleared the carb again and adjusted the needle. Fired right up, sounds great!  I’ll have to test the generator function the next time I run it. Now I can sleep tonight...

I had a long day driving yesterday to collect this drill (& some vintage electronics), it's the nicest Bridges Mini Mota drill I've seen and it came with the original box & instructions.

And a first for me this drill actually came with the chuck key.

So, I took the carb apart again, and reassembled it properly. Little bit of fiddling with the mixture and it runs nicely. Hunts slowly at idle, but when the throttle is opened up it runs quite well. Dunked it in the pool and it wanted to pull me in! I'll get a video when I put it on the canoe next week and post the link if anyone is interested.

I just finished swapping out the points. That seemed to do the trick. I think the points that were in there weren’t really making a connection, they seemed to be worn at odd angles or someone sanded them poorly. Just ran a carb worth of gas, sounded great. I may rig up a small tank tomorrow so I can try to run it a little longer.

Fishnuts2 reacted to CNew in Ohlsson & Rice: Gas Tank Repair
Thought I would test out an idea on this gas tank repair on the cheap since I’ve got it opened up. When I heated the bottom to loosen the epoxy seal the heat deformed the plastic cone that holds the fuel filter screen on the end of the pickup tube.  I basically modified a 1/8 x 1/8 compression fitting. I drilled out the center so it could slide on the pickup tube all the way through to make it adjustable and easier to set it at the right position just above the bottom of the tank base plate. I then punched out a 1/4” piece of fuel screen and secured it all in place.

While not unusual or anything I was happy to land a NOS military engine with the original box and packaging for the tank and air cleaner. This engine is pretty much pristine and never been used.  Best part was I got it at good price.

Got the urge to play with the drill press out in the 120F garage. Decided to build another stand.  I think this one will be good for engine test runs.

Fishnuts2 reacted to CNew in Ohlsson & Rice: Home-built Mower-Trimmer
Ok, here’s the little project I’ve been working on for the last couple weeks.  I’ve been wanting to make a small lawn mower/trimmer with an O&R and I had a nice 133 military engine that needed to find a home.  Thanks to Terry@Just O&R, he was able to hook me up with the perfect vintage mower - it was exactly what I was hoping for. This one is a 14” Sensation, perfect size and design style for the O&R.

It’s not 100% done yet but I couldn’t put off getting some photos posted. I’m still working on the actual trimmer concept and plan to go with more of a weed eater head set up instead of a mower blade.  I plan to use the starter cup off a vintage Pioneer chainsaw and drill three holes so I can pass through some pre-cut Trimmer lines with end-stops. I’ll figure out a good way to secure the cup to the spindle shaft. I also added a stop button to the back plate similar to a few other O&R tools I have.  I’m also finalizing a short throttle cable, doesn’t really need one but thought it might be nice. After a lot of hunting I ended up finding a cast aluminum boat chair pedestal that made the perfect adapter plate to mount the engine to the mower. I also had to swap out the normal Type 133 mount with one that has a couple more inches in height. This was needed to get the right clearance for the gas tank.  Just a note, the early style Drillgine gas tanks don’t mount to the newer style engines and I had to make a couple slight mods to the casting on the case to get all the clearances to fit right.

Here is the before and after...

Couldn't resist the urge to go out and tinker again after seeing Terry @JUST O&R on that skateboard. That was great stuff and glad we finally wore you down to go out and give it a try.
So, Got'er some more friction with a big azz spring and some more tire pressure. It won't carry me up the slight incline that well but gets moving going down.  The biggest thing I noticed was my ever increasing bald spot.
The ball's in someone else's court now!

Fishnuts2 reacted to BabaBooey in O&R Powered Halicki Skate Board 1960's (aka Toby Cart)
Hi All, This is my 1st post as I am new to this forum & hope the knowledge within will provide answers to my ?'s. A friend who grew up in California recently gave me this Toby Cart he used as a kid.  It was produced by the Halicki company in Gardena California, sometime in the 60's.  The motor is an Ohlsson & Rice, J II .85,  the carb, & gas tank are missing so I am on the hunt for both. I have gone thru the motor & all is good to go!  This is meant as a display piece so there is no panic or urgency to grab parts.  You won't catch me or anyone I care for trying it out!  Would the carb be the same as the J I & J III? if so what source if any?  where could I get a steel tank?
There is not much info available about "Toby Cart" on the internet period.  This is what I've researched so far & hope I have it correct.  Toby Halicki moved to California when he was 15 & started pumping gas, within 2 years he owned his own body shop & eventually ended up with his own wrecking yard, he started building hot rods & custom cars, fixing wrecks etc, he took real estate classes & ended up buying commercial properties, later he was tapped to do stunt driving in movies & eventually caught the acting bug. He took acting class & ending up writing a script (1974) to a movie titled "Gone in 60 Seconds".  The movie was not that successful in N America but Europe loved it & he made millions.  Unfortunately Toby died while filming Gone in 60 #2 (1989) on location in Buffalo, a stunt went wrong & he was hurt by a downed telephone pole. An avid collector, Toby also owned one of the worlds largest toy & automobile collections.  Thanks for looking & feel free to correct or add info.
    Sincerely, Don M
