I’ll give this thing a good look tonight or this weekend now that the compressor unit is here and I can see how things line up, or don’t. I appreciate the offer on the gear and will let you know if it looks like the chainsaw gearbox might be a good option.
I think it is likely 1/2”. I’ll have to look in my stuff as well. I had a shaft at one point but I think it might have been a smaller diameter. The compressor just arrived today. Unfortunately the aluminum casting foot on the bottom that works as a spacer on the base plate broke during shipping, or when the previous owner removed the electric motor. I’ll have to try to epoxy this and repair it.
Either way sounds good to me. I can buy the gear off you and give it a try or if you want to try it first that’s great too. If it does work I’ll have to figure out how to get a tapered shaft made to fit up. As you also pointed out , the orientation of the gearbox being down vs up might be important. I need to verify that either orientation will line up properly.
I’m going to look through all my stuff again tonight. I could swear I had a gear box or complete engine that had an external shaft gear box. I’ll let you know if I get lucky and find it.
Interesting idea - thanks! Would you just have to drill out the opposite side of the cover plate for the shaft to go through? Not sure how you would reorient the little bearings that ride on the short section of the shaft(I’m trying to think by memory) but I’ll have to take a closer look at this tonight. I’m intrigued though...
Exactly. I had forgotten the PTO was flipped. At first I thought the compressors just had direct drive until I looked a little closer, I wasn’t expecting it to use a gear box.
Thanks David! I thought I had a used gearbox like this but turns out I don’t. I have an engine I think I can use but need to figure out what to do for a gearbox.
According to the 1971 Series 13A price list (special types), engine Type 216 has a 1700 R.P.M. single reduction gearbox with centrifugal clutch.
It looks very similar to the Type 195 (H-III) but with the fuel/gas tank fitted on the opposite side to normal (i.e. below the carb), the Type 216 uses fuel/gas tank part number #A-32-30 with bracket #97-12.

What other tools might have used this type of gearbox?
Wow, amazing website! You truly have an incredible pedal and gas powered car collection. That has to be one of the coolest uses of the O&R engine. I’m glad you found this forum and I hope we can help get you the missing parts.
JustO&R- let me know what you find. I’ll try to take a look as well, not sure I have any extra/complete recoils.
That can definitely be restored. Looks like a new spring and pull know would do it plus some major TLC. I’m also very curious what this engine is attached to! More photos?
Looks amazing! Nice to see the progress. That throttle looks good too. Nice touch with the heat screen over the exhaust, that’s a good detail just like the original. I need to get back on my cutoff saw and get in the groove again.
I had to go back and watch your maiden voyage video as well, too funny!
Very nice unit and glad to hear you got it running. I’ve never seen that model of pump, it looks kind of like a combination of a couple different style pumps.
Factory or Wallfish are probably your best bet for having info.
I’ve seen a few of the Keene sluice boxes but people want outrageous money for them for some reason. Last one I saw just for the sluice box was about $600. I keep watching though...
Your pump looks to be in really nice shape. I haven’t opened up the pump yet but I suspect it will be cracked like yours, especially having lived and used here in the hot desert. I’m going to need to flatten the base plate a bit on mine. Someone also drilled holes in the base plate, probably for some sort of simple loop handle.
No I closed the shop to take care of family in Florida just haven't found a house yet. I,m trying to keep an eye on things but its hard with a new job.
hope all is good ?
Wow, that’s some big changes. I hope things are going well. New jobs are always a challenge but I hope it’s something you’re enjoying.
That’s a great question.... I still have a couple projects in front of it, including the O&R cutoff saw that I need to finish assembling. I just need to get myself back in the groove again!
I still need to finish putting the cutoff saw back together. My break from the saw has been prolonged and I’ve been fixing up a vintage Raleigh Twenty 20” folding bicycle. Picked up this cool O&R Keene pump from a local guy that does gold prospecting as a hobby.
Here are some photos of the TAS P7 ice auger, it cleaned up pretty well. I had to replace the kill switch and make a new carb diaphragm and gasket, replaced the fuel and vent lines and the spark plug and it fired right up.
