I charged up the battery yesterday evening and then rigged it up to the 1050 this morning. She started first time but was quickly enveloped in blue smoke! The pepper pot exhaust is well loud and it was exaggerated by the proximity of the surrounding houses. I think that will have to come off and a stack exhaust installed at some point.. It was difficult to run it smoothly as there's no choke cable connected so it kept spluttering and stalling. However it was enough to tell me it's alive with vigour. I let it ran for several minutes before draining the oil. It was thick black oil with some sludge in the bottom. Leaving it for several hours to drain, I greased up where necessary. On filling her up with fresh oil, I fired her up again and I am pleased that there is a lot less smoke but it still obvious. Chris thinks it sounds like piston rings so maybe that something else that will need doing at some point. I did engage gears and it moved under it own power very slowly but there was a lot of screeching which I thought was my wife but wasn't. I think a set of belts are on the cards too plus a new red seat cover. There is some surface rust here and there but I can live with that. Some more photos with a better backdrop this time.

That's a very tidy and straight Landy Joseph! Wish my Dad bought me a landy when I was your age...... I think Alan's right about the colour and the Showman's love of the RED, I think Bolens White would be more appropriate Iain.

I agree with Chris. I like the way it been put together; it almost look like a purpose made manufactured implement.

I collected the 1050 from the lock up this morning and bought it back to my house where I gave it a a quick wash to get rid of the grime. I drained the transmission oil and it wasn't as bad as I thought. After a an hour, I used my air line to blow out any excess oil into the container. It was replaced with new oil. I think the previous owner, a mechanic, serviced it from time to time. I emptied the fuel tank of cider vinegar and was impressed with how clean the inside of the tank was. I rinsed it out with cold water and then added carbonate of soda to neutralise the acids. I also rinsed the tank with petrol for good measure. The tank was installed with a new fuel line. I poured in fresh petrol and cleaned the spark plug and ensure everything was in place, I turned the key. Unfortunately, the battery was weak even though the engine turned over slowly. I am now charging the battery over night and hopefully I can fire up the engine to warm her up in order to drain the engine oil.

There are a number of WH owners on this Forum living in the East Sussex area who might be able yo help you out? Whereabouts are you in East Sussex? Also introduce yourself with photos of your project as you might get more replies? By by the way, I bet your Wheel Horse is easier to renew the tyres than reshaping the shoes for a 4 legged horse.

Iain, as it happens my thoughts are now to seal the tank after cleansing. POR15 sealant is a possibility. Any other brands out there?

Quick update. I drained the tank full of apple cider vinegar through a sieve to capture any specks of rusted metal/ sediments into a bucket. The colour was certainly darker than before. I could see that it was getting cleaner at the bottom of the tank with the aid of my IPhone torch. I refilled again with the used vinegar after passing it through a sieve again. I think it's working, albiet slowing.

That's ordinary petrol......

I ate ribeye steak a few weekends ago in Dorset. Delicious! Very rarely eat steak; last time I ate it was about 4 years ago at the same pub to the day!

Quick update. I looked inside the tank and the scum and floating rusty participles was noticeable. I have shaken it a few times in the last 24 hours and tomorrow I think I might put the tank in the back of the pickup as I got a good 45 minutes drive tomorrow there and back. Might help remove even more filth. On my way back I popped into our local John Deere supplier to buy the Stihl Evo 2 stroke fuel for my hedge trimmer when I spotted a sale on for 5 L containers of unleaded petrol produced by Viking (part of the Stihl Group). My intention is to over winter my running Bolens with this fuel to reduce 'gumming up' the fuel system and for ease of starting after being laid up. I have used its 2 stroke equivalent for a number of years with no problems. I bought 2 containers at a bargain price for £11.90 plus VAT each.

I don't want to beef on about it but technically they are beef burgers.

Well, I got the petrol tank off this afternoon after I put the wheel back on (tyre was still inflated). I tipped the stale fuel out into a see through container; looked like someone urinated in it! Specks of flaky rusts also came out. I then pressure washed the tank a few times. I then quickly dried it out with my air line before pouring in undiluted Sainsbury's cider vinegar almost to the top. I am going to leave it in there for at least 48 hours,, possibly longer. Every now and again, I will give it a shake to slosh it around the tank. I am using this method as it's cheaper than using chemicals and also safer to the user and cleaner for the environment; all worthy reasons. To neutralise the acids I will use be using diluted baking soda after a thorugh rinsing. It will be interesting to see how clean it will be afterwards.

Look like a good show and pleased that the weather held for you on Saturday as here it was wet all day. Were you the only one with garden tractors on show?

The tyre all pumped up and 'touch wood' it will stay inflated. I don't think the red is the original red as I am sure it's darker?
