    This rather nice collection of engines and spares arrived today, three complete engines and loads of bits, plus some useful literature and dealer tags...

    Engines now on the display with the others.

    Hello, I recently acquired 2 O&R 23s for a very good deal. I've been flying glow engines in my planes for about a year and a half now, but wanted to get into gas and these little engines seemed like a great start. If I get them running good I might even put them into my RC DC-3 :).

    I already have both engines taken apart and the internals are quite clean. Pleasantly surprised for engines that can be as old or older than myself. I'm going to mount a carb on both to convert them to R/C.

    I'm not really sure on how these engines really work, specifically the spark/ignition part.  I know back in their days there were ignition coils to produce the spark. Those small coils seem few and far between now so I have been trying to find alternatives.

    Has anyone used CDI on these old sparkies? I have bought an used CDI unit to test it out. What else can I use to run ignition with these engines?

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Noah.

    Finally getting to this project.  I thought it was going to be a fairly straightforward tear down but NOPE this thing had surprises at every turn. I even had to drill out a couple screws.  It’s finally all apart now. The paint isn’t in the greatest condition (looks better in the photos than it actually is) but I’m planning to keep it as-is. It would look awesome fully repainted but I’m probably not going that route on this one.  The engine is a real mess...

    Thanks David, awesome find!  I’ll let the owner know of this issue of Mechanix Illustrated.

    First I have ever seen. Jumped at it. I am more partial to letter series briggs so I am going to flip it to fund my Briggs needs. Found your group trying to research it during listing. Gotta love previous owners take on soup can gas tank lol.

    Finally all back together. I don’t have a natural wood knob so I have a black one on there temporarily.  It has really strong compression now and spark but I haven’t tried to run it yet.

    factory got a reaction from Brian Lynch in Ohlsson & Rice: The Groomer Landscaper 600
    Same here, mostly back together but I haven't got round to adding the progress to the thread. Rain has stopped me cleaning some parts outside so I've been working on vintage HP counter that's also been in bits for too long.

    I forgot to ask before, but what are the approx dimensions of the two trimmer guards? and are there any markings on the trimmer head to indicate if it was either made by AEP* or bought in? Some pictures of the trimmer head may also help @Brian Lynch with locating the lost parts for his Groomer trimmer.

    The title of both threads should really have AEP in it.

    Here is another pump that your engine could have been part of, there is no branding on this one (if it had a decal it's long gone). The engine SN of this one is #005790.

    This is the latest addition to my O&R collection, a Petro Powered Products Chug-A-Pump.
    The engine is an early compact I with the side mounted carb needle & screws in the back of the starter/blower cover.

    Unfortunately a previous owner disliked the starter mechanism so much that they cut it off completely.

    The engine was also seized & the flywheel nut threads were stripped, fortunately the crankshaft threads are OK. After removing the sparkplug I discovered someone had tried and failed to unseize it by hammering the piston with a rod, the piston has a hole in it. I left it overnight with some oil poured in the cylinder.

    Today I stripped it down further, I was surprized to find the flywheel key was steel, it does have a different part number to the later engines so may be original? The oil left in overnight did the job and I was able to turn the flywheel a bit, which enabled me to remove the cylinder without damaging the conrod. The cylinder is a bit rusty but hopefully it will clean up for reuse. The missing bits of the piston were shaken out of the crankcase.

    The gudgeon pin is also different to the later engines as it is solid, it is also smaller in diameter, I have a few spare pistons but they can't be used because of this.

    OK, do you know anyone with a wood turning lathe?
    Any condenser from an O&R would work, if an early style one had failed in service it would have been replaced with the later one. I've used modern parts too;

    The rest of the pump is the same as the Comet, Orline, Petro etc with the small rotary vane type pump, the type with the rubber impeller that always seems to be knackered. Petro version shown below;

    What a joke, that is totally misrepresented and very dishonest to use those mini-bike pictures they found.

    Try used engine, fell off a chainsaw, only one screw holding the starter on (because the other four are still in the chainsaw tank).

    Been way too busy moving stuff into storage the last week, the workbench is still a complete mess but hopefully it will be useable again soon.

    I've got at least one starter here that someone has fitted a solid rivet too, of course this would be fine if it was one of the earliest engines.
    I also have a couple of NOS rivets too, not tried fitting one yet either, but I did fit a pop-rivet to one a few years before I got the NOS ones, luckily the steel insert came out leaving the hole for oiling.

    You could do with finding someone that does "EDM drilling" to add a hole to that rivet that just spins when you try drilling it.

    The engine certainly looks a lot better without the half done spray paint finish.
    I'm looking forward to seeing the finished saw.

    After hours of tedious clean up with dental tools the engine is finally free of green paint and I completely went through everything. I’m working on prepping all the body work now. I wasn’t expecting this to turn into a complete re-do but o’well, it should look nice all said and done.

    I had a long day driving yesterday to collect this drill (& some vintage electronics), it's the nicest Bridges Mini Mota drill I've seen and it came with the original box & instructions.

    And a first for me this drill actually came with the chuck key.
