Ian 2,417 #27 Posted March 24, 2015 It's a shame the original trans is scrap, but it's very handy having a spare in your spares Ahhh, yes.. Drilling out a hitch pin! A nasty job to be sure but sometimes it's the only way..
Stormin 4,458 #28 Posted March 24, 2015 Had to drill out the C-125s. Awkward when trans still on tractor.
the showman 4,074 #29 Posted March 24, 2015 I did the last one in the tractor, that's why I did this before I change it
meadowfield 1,900 #30 Posted March 24, 2015 You do only end to drill through half the casing to split it though... Then press the rest out when you have split it 1 diggerjames reacted to this
the showman 4,074 #31 Posted March 25, 2015 Hopefully I won't have to split this one Mark
the showman 4,074 #32 Posted March 27, 2015 Not having much luck with the trannys, the one i was going to fit won't go into 3rd gear now and i cant get the hubs off to open it up and have a look. Removed the tranny from the tractor, got the hub off one side and the other came out with the shaft and the needle bearing is shot, started drilling out the towbar pin and the drill went up in smoke. So at the moment I've got 3 transmissions scattered across the workshop floor and the chard remains of a drill 1 diggerjames reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #33 Posted March 28, 2015 That's not good.
Ian 2,417 #34 Posted March 28, 2015 That's not good mate. Can you make one good box out the three?
the showman 4,074 #35 Posted March 28, 2015 I'm hoping to, once i get them open 1 Ian reacted to this
slf-uk 914 #36 Posted March 28, 2015 I have always managed to get the axle pin to move with a large propane torch. I put to torch on the casing and keep the pin cool, whilst hitting it lightly with a non-metal hammer. Usually takes about an hour and best done on a cold day as you get nice and warm. the showman 4,074 #37 Posted March 28, 2015 After going to buy a new drill, i spent the afternoon in the shed. I finished drilling out the hitch pin removed allthe hubs from both boxes without braking them with my home made puller and opened them up. The box on the left is the one that won't go in 3rd gear, it looks like the problem is rusty balls in the selector shafts and the one on the right is the box out of the tractor which is just about a bin job, there was aload of needles in the bottom and one of the roller bearings is missing some balls. Next job is to throw it all in the parts washer and see what can be saved out of three boxes
meadowfield 1,900 #38 Posted March 28, 2015 I know where to come for two hubs and a third gear cluster... Don't throw anything away! I could especially do with two of the more modern hubs to modify for my next 4x4 creation.....
the showman 4,074 #39 Posted March 28, 2015 Two will have to go back on the tractor Mark, don't know if i have any others, the 1" ones are hard to find now
meadowfield 1,900 #40 Posted March 28, 2015 I'm after two of the later beefier ones. I need to reverse them and turn them down. I've a pair of good condition early ones, there's just not enough meat on them for what need.
Stormin 4,458 #41 Posted March 28, 2015 , there was aload of needles in the bottom and one of the roller bearings is missing some balls. Now where have I seen that before? 1 the showman reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #42 Posted March 29, 2015 Been having a think, Chris. Could some kind of baffle be fitted behind the roller bearing, to stop needles going into the bearing if the needle roller fails? It would have to have very small holes in to allow oil through, but not big enough for needles to pass through.
the showman 4,074 #43 Posted March 29, 2015 It would have to go in before the bearing as the other end is smaller, all you can do is what you did and use an enclosed bearing as against the open type fitted
Stormin 4,458 #44 Posted March 29, 2015 I took the bearing seals out to allow oil to get to the needle roller. Just wish I'd had the idea then.
the showman 4,074 #45 Posted March 30, 2015 Another day on the trannys, out of 4 i have found 2 casings with good ball bearings in and have cleaned them both up in the parts washer, ordered all new needle bearings and oil seals from my local bearing shop. They have them all in stock at another branch and i will have them Wednesday, ive made a new gasket so at a standstill until they arrive 1 Ian reacted to this
Ian 2,417 #46 Posted March 30, 2015 It sounds like you slowly winning the trans battle Chris

Stormin 4,458 #48 Posted April 2, 2015 How many trannies are you rebuilding, Chris? Looks enough parts for 4 there.
the showman 4,074 #49 Posted April 2, 2015 I've got 4 in bits, i need one for the tractor on the bench and one for a 69 Commando 7 and if i can make up another for a spare will be good, but i need at least
the showman 4,074 #50 Posted April 3, 2015 One 3 speed tranny back together with new needle bearings and oil seals , and the best bit is that it selects all the gears. I'll get the hubs and pulleys back on and back in the tractor tomorrow 2 Stormin and pmackellow reacted to this
