Darmic1 447 #1 Posted April 24, 2017 What to do with a 'free' weekend, a pile of Villiers MK12 bits and a can of paint? Having restored several machines using Villiers engines over the last couple of years I have managed to collect 3 almost complete donor engines..... So as I was at loose end this weekend I set about sorting them out with a view to making one good engine out of all the bits! It's suprising what you can do in just a day, engines stripped, parts cleaned, degreased, old paint removed, de-rusted, etch primed, painted, gaskets made, parts reassembled...... I have a carb and exhaust, the only parts I haven't got is a working coil, 3 dud ones, tank brackets and an exhaust gasket! The coil is probably the most expensive part to buy for one of these engines, might have to wait a few weeks! I'm probably going to make a stationary engine out of this one, mount it on a trolley and have it powering some sort of lighting......... 8 Reiver, Stormin, pmackellow and 5 others reacted to this
Anglo Traction 1,016 #2 Posted April 24, 2017 Nice work Darren. Like you, I've done the same with the surplus Villiers Midget Mk2 parts. Hoping to get back to doing things with it in the workshop soon. 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Chris 642 #3 Posted April 24, 2017 I got a new unstamped name plate for one of these Darren It would look the dogs on the cowl 1 Darmic1 reacted to this

Darmic1 447 #7 Posted May 2, 2017 Did a little more to this engine yesterday..... New coil fitted, engine timed, blanked off 'kick start' bolt holes, cleaned and painted exhaust, fitted air shroud, tank brackets and tank....... Just needs the HT lead and the carb that I can't find!!! 3 S1g, Stormin and Alan reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #8 Posted May 3, 2017 A little gift arrived from Chris this morning! A big thankyou from me! I'll pop into town and get the numbers etched on tomorrow and collect some more rivets that size....... 4 Alan, the showman, Cub Cadet and 1 other reacted to this
Chris 642 #9 Posted May 5, 2017 Where it belongs mate Its been kicking arround here for years. When I saw your engine I thought now is the time to move it on 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #10 Posted May 11, 2017 Gareth, S1G kindly donated a carb to this project after I had turned my garage upside down trying to find the spare I know I have somewhere??? After dismantling and cleaning in my newly purchased Ultrasonic Tank, I reassembled it, bolted it to the manifold, added fuel and crossed my fingers! https://youtu.be/Okqj5qyXMfg 3 pmackellow, S1g and Stormin reacted to this
S1g 579 #11 Posted May 11, 2017 Pleased to see the carb was OK as it had hung round the workshop for years so had no idea how good it was 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #12 Posted May 23, 2017 Have been busy the last couple of weeks but have been making some progress with this project. I had some off cuts of timber left over from a job, ideal to make into the trolley for the Villiers...... Also found a company selling small cast wheels for a few pounds each....... Wheels and trolley are almost ready for the engine to be bolted on! 5 S1g, Alan, the showman and 2 others reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #13 Posted May 23, 2017 Nice trolley. What is the engine going to be driving? Or don't you know yet?
Darmic1 447 #14 Posted May 23, 2017 Hi Norm! I plan to buy a Lucas A127 alternator and have it power a leisure battery with some LED lighting?
the showman 4,074 #15 Posted May 23, 2017 Trolley looks brilliant mate. 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #17 Posted May 24, 2017 Bit more progress today, found some suitable u-shaped brackets to secure the axles into place. I then fitted the wheels and greased them up. Next job was to find some suitable material for mounting everything on......Couldn't find any 4mm steel sheet local, but was offered some 4mm Aluminium...... It looks very nice etc..... But not convinced it will stay that way and it will make it more difficult mounting the alternator brackets on......... as i'm unable to tig weld...... Also fitted the ID plate kindly donated by Chris, etched with the engine numbers too! 4 Alan, Stormin, S1g and 1 other reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #18 Posted May 24, 2017 Looking good. You could bolt the alternator brackets on. 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #19 Posted May 25, 2017 I could, but was thinking welding would be better, and some sort of adjuster to tension the belt???
Stormin 4,458 #20 Posted May 25, 2017 Just mount the alternator similar to on a car. You'll most likely get the brackets etc from a scrapyard.
Darmic1 447 #21 Posted May 26, 2017 That sounds like a good plan, i'll have a look around when I get back from my holiday! But today I thought I would address my concerns about the exhaust sticking out too far forward and above the rope pull...... I had an old Villiers exhaust which had at some point been snapped and brazed back together using 22mm copper plumbing pipe? This had of course been severely flattened and bent! So I cut away the copper and removed 95% off the braze! Only to find the can of the pepperpot was seriously holed with rust!. I spent an hour spot welding the holes and chasing them around!!! Eventually I managed to repair the can satisfactory and then set to welding a new tube and flange back on. Next was to figure out how to mount the front of the exhaust as the inside and threaded mount had corroded away. For this I used another short piece of tube, in which I drilled 8mm holes all around to allow exhaust gases out into the can. I then welded a captive bolt in the end to secure the pepperpot cover. I then splayed the other end and welded that into the can. Once fully welded up I cleaned off the remaining rust and weld splatter before painting with VHT exhaust paint...... After the paint had dried, I bolted it on an ran the engine to 'cure' the exhaust paint...... It sounds fine and heres just a short video..... 2 S1g and Stormin reacted to this
Stormin 4,458 #22 Posted May 26, 2017 Nice job. I've a couple of Wheel Horse Kohler exhausts in dire need of some tlc. How are you fixed? 1 Darmic1 reacted to this
Darmic1 447 #23 Posted May 26, 2017 Thanks! I did wonder if this one would be savable when I started blowing holes with the welder turned right down! It depends how bad the Kohler ones are? Lol
Darmic1 447 #24 Posted June 11, 2017 Now have something for it to drive! A Lucas A127 alternator, 70amp version. Made the brackets and adjuster today and fitted it all on to the trolley. Next job will be to paint the brackets and reassemble for the final time. I will then sort the wiring, get a leisure battery and some LED lights! 7 the showman, Alan, nigel and 4 others reacted to this
