meadowfield 1,900 #2 Posted January 9, 2015 Joe, originally it will have been dextron auto fluid. Clean it all out, add a new toro or napa filter and refill with regular 10w40. That's what I did with my GT14
Joe the small engine man 89 #3 Posted January 9, 2015 Thank you meadowfield for your help!
meadowfield 1,900 #4 Posted January 9, 2015 Most Toro distributors will get you the filter for around £17 which is cheaper than the us. Make sure you use the proper one though. There's some videos and lots of pics on the gt14 thread on redsquare
Joe the small engine man 89 #5 Posted January 9, 2015 hi meadfield what oil is for the auto transmission because is it hydro-static or what?
meadowfield 1,900 #6 Posted January 9, 2015 Just regular 10w40 mineral oil for the automatics. Mines either from Halfords or tesco.... Probably whichever was the cheapest!
Joe the small engine man 89 #7 Posted January 9, 2015 oh ok so what oil shall I use in the engine?
meadowfield 1,900 #8 Posted January 9, 2015 The same 10w40 is what we use

Chris 642 #10 Posted January 10, 2015 Same here Maybe WH do use different oil?? I would have thought Red ATF in the rear & SAE 30 in the engine Thats what I use in my Bolens anyhow
meadowfield 1,900 #11 Posted January 10, 2015 They stopped using dextron ATF fluid in around 1976. All the later oil stickers changed over...
Stormin 4,458 #12 Posted January 10, 2015 I use SAE30 in the engines also. EP90 in the manual transmissions.
the showman 4,074 #13 Posted January 10, 2015 I use sae 30 in my engines too, and sae 10w30 Api or 5w50 in my hydrostatic
slf-uk 914 #14 Posted January 10, 2015 This brings back delightful memories of doing lots of research into oils and filters when I did a mechanical refurb of my D-160. I concluded that SAE30 was the best for the WH engine AND auto transmission. I did not feel right putting normal engine oil in the transmission as it then uses that for the hydraulic lifts, but it has worked well for the last couple of year and was what the experts recommended. For the filter, I was not going to pay the UK or US Toro prices so I cross references various part numbers until I found a regular equivalent at a better price, however like a muppet I forgot to write down what it was and have now forgotten. Triumph66 1,256 #15 Posted January 10, 2015 I am the same too on my BOlens; I use SAE 30 lawn mower oil as they are air cooled engines and as I have approximately 10l of EP90 left over from my Land Rover days for the transmission. 1 Stormin reacted to this

slf-uk 914 #18 Posted January 10, 2015 You as well eh! From the posts I have read, I think we all either run or in the past have run a LR. Must be something to do with our mutual interest in the equipment we talk about on here. Iain 1 Triumph66 reacted to this
Triumph66 1,256 #19 Posted January 10, 2015 You as well eh! The old girl was incontinent; hence my supply of EP90
meadowfield 1,900 #20 Posted January 10, 2015 It does sound wrong using engine oil, but times have moved on. Things have improved and engine oil on modern cars is used for the gearbox/diff as well.... My C101 has 10w40 in the transmission too for the last 4 years. Only downside is it leaks out faster

meadowfield 1,900 #22 Posted January 10, 2015 I said 10w40, but the sticker says 10w30. But as it's always colder here then 40 is better anyway 1 Joe the small engine man reacted to this
