pmackellow 2,738 #1 Posted January 31, 2014 A mate of mine down on the Sussex Coast (no not Mr Showman) has a large collection of stationary engines, mainly generators and battery charging sets, amongst which is a little set made by W.E.Conyers Ltd. I always fancied this little set and thought if one came along I would add it to the collection, as its 6 12 or 24 volt I could use it to demonstrate the 12 volt Tarpen equipment that I have. Walking round the Sunday Sortout at Newark last November I spotted a Conyers set on the very last stall we looked at. It wasn't dear so was duly purchased and brought back to the camping field (see first photo below) A few days later I popped down to see our mate Steve who owns the other Conyers set and found that not only did my set run with a bit of tinkering (and a bit of smoke - too much oil in the petrol) but that it and Steves set are only two serial numbers apart !! 4 Wallfish, Joe the small engine man, wheeledhorseman and 1 other reacted to this
Wallfish 698 #2 Posted January 31, 2014 That's an interesting little generator. Most all of the older stuff over here put out 110v ac but I do have O&R generators that also produce 12v dc.
wheeledhorseman 19 #3 Posted February 1, 2014 Nice little genset you picked up there Paul, must have been well chuffed adding that to your collection. I do like gensets but have to resist the temptation to buy - my real favourites are the types used to provide electric lighting for houses beyond the reach of mains electricity in the 1920s & 30s. Thanks for posting. Andy
Stormin 4,458 #4 Posted February 1, 2014 I'll have to put up a photo of the generator I've got. Single cylinder diesel. 240 and 110 volt. It's buried in a corner of the workshop now and I can't give details as to make or anything.
pmackellow 2,738 #5 Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks for your comments gents I also have a 240 volt Conyers set with an Aspera engine on it plus various flavours of Tarpen generators, 110 and 240 volt with wattages ranging from 400 to 1500
pmackellow 2,738 #6 Posted February 1, 2014 Here's the 240 volt Conyers genset, its got a JAP 2A tank on it at present, Steve D has given me the right tank for it so a change over will happen somewhen, its on my "to do" list !! 1 Joe the small engine man reacted to this

pmackellow 2,738 #10 Posted March 6, 2014 Just a small update on the Conyers story, we visited our mate Steve down the coast this evening after visiting Chris and Pam Sutton (who are both ok), talking to Steve in his garage/musuem he suddenly said " you better have that Conyers then", so now I own both sets featured above !! Thanks Steve... 1 diggerjames reacted to this

Kevin Percy 2 #17 Posted January 20, 2016 Hi, I am new to this group and am looking for information about my Sachs powered Conyers battery charging generator. I believe it is a 1967 model. i am hoping that someone has instructions to change the output voltage from 12 to 6 , or 24 volts. I have owned it for about 6 years, it runs great and the generaor works. I got it as a bonus when purchasing a Villiers powered Penguin Amphibious ATV. Thanks in advance, Kevin 2 Ian and pmackellow reacted to this
Ian 2,417 #18 Posted January 20, 2016 Hi Kevin, welcome to MOM.. I can't help you with any info on the generator but I'm sure members with better knowledge of such things than me will be along to help you out.. Your Villiers powered Penguin Amphibious ATV sounds an interesting bit of kit, got any photo's?
Wristpin 400 #19 Posted January 20, 2016 Conyers alternator coupled to a ten horsepower Tecumseh . Gen set assembled by the old Godfreys of Brenchley (Kent) company in the late 70s just before they went into liquidation - allegedly due to an ill advised venture into genset production involving Nigeria! This one is for sale. PM me if interested. 2 wurzel and pmackellow reacted to this
pmackellow 2,738 #20 Posted January 20, 2016 Hello Kevin and welcome I had one of those Sachs powered sets a few years ago and like a prat moved it on Not sure now how to change voltages but I think there's a few sparkies on here who may be able to advise you... Wristpin, I like that set of yours...
Kevin Percy 2 #21 Posted January 20, 2016 Thanks for the replies about the genset. Attached is a photo of a Penguin and an NOS engine for it. The engine is a Villiers 9E, 197cc two stroke. It is essentially a motorcycle engine and 4 speed transmission unit with fan cooling and a reversible electric starter. The engine runs CW, and CCW. The Penguin was produced in 1963-64 in Canada, and one was presented to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in Oct. 1964.
Stormin 4,458 #22 Posted January 21, 2016 I remember the Villiers 197 well. I assume that one has fan cooling and where does the fuel tank fit?
Kevin Percy 2 #23 Posted January 22, 2016 Yes, the fan is on the left side of the engine. The fuel tank is part of the Penguin body. Sorry about the upside down picture.
