Wheel Horse SD Deck

 Last year I obtained a side discharge deck in need of some T.L.C. Today I got it into the workshop to see what needs to be done to make it usable.

 

 

 

  Though very rusty, it has only a couple of holes showing and the cutter spindle bearings are free and smooth. One of the rear rollers is also missing.  The edges of the belt guard are suffering from tin worm in places and mouse nest and other debris cleaned out when removed.

 

 Belt didn't want to come off, as the tensioner was seized. The tensioner pulley was also right up against the nut holding the spring end. I think the belt was a little short.

 

 

  Deck is now mostly stripped down except for a couple of stubborn bolts and a pulley putting up some resistance.

If it jogs your memory it's model number is :- 75-42MS. Serial number :- 155310. Made/assembled Amnor. Belgium.

 

So I'm assuming 1975. 42 inch cut.

It's 1977. fits- B-100, C-120/160 Auto and Manual. Blade Kit part #100200.

Deck Spindle Belt Part #6738 - Section 4L, 86 inch.

Drive Belt #102742 -  Section A , 85 inch.

  Well it's all  in bits now.

  Had a fight with two of the bolts holding one of the spindle housing. Heads were very corroded and sockets/spanners would not grip. After attacking one with grinder and chisel, it came out. The second one I needed to grind the head off. The bit that stayed in the housing is putting up a fight. Tried to drill it out using a pistol drill. Without success. I think a trip to the farm needed and try some heat. Other wise it's a replacement housing.

 

One of the plastic rear rollers is missing so a replacement for that needs to be found/made.

 

Also the two wheels for the rear height adjustment need replacing. One is more tyre than wheel.

 

 The deck shell isn't so bad. Underneath looks worse than it is. Repairs are needed to the left hand side and to the top. 

 

 

  I'm going to see if I can get everything grit blasted before I do anything else. So that's it for now.

Bit of a long shot Norm, but I THINK there may be some wheels and roller at you know where.  Assuming they haven't already been dumped.  Will look next visit.  Don't suppose the spindle housings from the Mountfield ? deck are the same.  You know, the one you DON'T want.

  Got a bit done to the shell today. It's been at a friends to have a couple of patches welded in. Better welder than yours truly. The steel I provided was a little thicker than the original and the patches do show. Though that's not a problem. It's going to be a worker, not a show piece. Should last me out.

 

 Attacked it with drill and wire wheel this morning and gave the underneath a coat of red oxide. Looks better already. It'll get a second coat tomorrow then a couple of coats of agricultural enamel. When that's done it'll be the turn of the top.

Similar stuff to what I used up on mine only it was made? by Hammerite. Should offer reasonable protection. Looking much better now Norm and should last quIte a while.

Yes Ewan. Biggest were SD 60" introduced in '76'. Prior to that, there was only the 42" and 48" SD, but there was a Rear Mounted 60" Deck (42" was the largest RD) .

Yes! I know it's black. Using up a tin of it.

 

 

Yesterday got this cleaned and red oxided.

 

This morning got the shell top cleaned.

 

 

 All the other bits are at a friends being blasted.

Bit of an update.

 

Top given a coat of red oxide, one of primer and one of IH red agricultural enamel. All hand painted. When all is assembled, it will be given a spray job.

 

 

 

 Collected all the bits from being blasted and primed.

 Got all the bits and pieces top coated and ready to assemble. Some parts to be repaired or replaced. Also I've discovered that someone has had this to bits before. Besides some patches on the shell, there are other clues. One being a couple of odd nuts on one of the blade spindles.

 

 Front scalp roller and wheel spindle axles bolts are well worn. I've some epoxy metal repair stuff and I'm going to see if that will renovate them. Other wise I'll make new ones. 

 

 One rear roller was missing and I'll let the Showman have details. He may have one or two lying about.

 

 The centre double blade  drive pulley is slack on the spindle. I'll see how the epoxy works on an axle bolt I'm trying it on goes and maybe use the epoxy on that and re-bore the centre. Another option is to split the pulleys and turn up a new centre. 

 

 I'll take some photo's tomorrow.

This is the epoxy metal replacement I'm trying. Says it can be drilled etc.

 

 

One axle bolt showing wear and one with a coat of epoxy.

 

 

 Two coats actually.

 

 I've started to assemble some of the brackets and was going to fit the belt tensioner. Here is another clue some ones been at this deck before. The flat bar for the tensioner pulley is held in position with two nylon bridge's to allow it to move. But there is nothing for under the bar to stop it rubbing on the shell top. I cannot find a manual with a schematic assembly drawing of the deck. Can anyone help?
