That can got me thinking. So I've had a dig in the back of the workshop and emerged with a W.D. square petrol can with brass cap, dated 1953. The can's dated not the cap.

Had run over to an old friend who is a bit of a Ransom addict. Well more than a bit. 11 at the last count and a goodly collection of various implements. Unfortunately they were all tucked away. But a few photo's for you.

I had a trip over to my local - ish garden machinery centre yesterday, to see if they had a condenser. Unfortunately not, but they did have an electric ignition module thing. So I got that and fitted it today.

You join t to the wire going to the coil.

After fitting and flywheel back in place, I decided to see if it worked. I didn't replace the spark plug, just lay it on the engine. Spin the motor and a good spark. Replaced the plug then fired up the engine. Started fine and I gave it some revs. No problem except for one.
There was a pop and something flew through the air and across the workshop.    I also felt drops of liquid on my face and oil spraying everywhere.
Now then, I hadn't replaced the engine cover yet and what fastens to that? Yes, the oil filler tube. The pressure with the high revs had blown it out.

     Be warned!

Below are some photo's of the traction engine built by my late father.

It's an M.E. 1" scale traction engine designed by Henry Greenly and built by my father in 1946/47. My mother said it took him 18 months. Home from work, dinner then shed. I sometimes wonder how I got born.
I haven't a clue how to run it and if memory serves, it hasn't run for 50 years. It will need pressure testing etc before it does. As to value?

Evening chaps, a bit of a progress report..

The bit of time I had yesterday was spent trying to work out how to make the trim/strengthening strips.. Despite numerous attempts I couldn't get them right..

Eventually I realized that the insides of the hood do not go straight down (or up if the hoods the right way up), but curve, which makes them impossible for me to make out of one bit of steel which I had been hoping to!!
Not sure what to do about that.. Maybe make an inner and out part, clamp them to the hood and weld them together...   Any thoughts on this guys?

This is all that remained of the hood mounting bracket!

After a quick blast in the cabinet.

Best break out some more steel, a little bit thicker this time..  The new MIG welder did well on this thicker stuff, I'm still struggling a bit with the thinner stuff though.. It will come in time

    The refurbed mounting bracket..

The outer edges need to be shaped to match the curves of the hood..

Can you spot something strange going on with the hood shape???   I don't know why I haven't spotted this before.. The left side is slightly taller then the right!!    Not by much but it's there all the same!

After a lot of looking, hammering, looking again, hammering some more, yet more looking, and more hammering I think I have it sorted now... What do you think Guy's, have I got it right now or do I need to hammer some more?

Out of interest I thought I'd run a wire cup brush on a grinder to see how the surface rust came up..
I quite like it... If it were mine I'd be tempted to leave it as is and wipe some oil over it once in a while

Below is a photo of my Petter diesel generator. I apologise for the poor quality but it is right in a far corner of the workshop.

    The engine is a Petter single cylinder diesel AA1. Number 74343 AA1. 3bhp. 3000rpm.

The generator by EP Allan & Co.

    KVA 2.5  Serial No  1022 2P.

    110/240v  Single phase.  50 cycles.  Amps 17,4 - 8.7.

I bought this some years back when we had several long power cuts. As in days. £150. Since then we have only had very short ones. I run it now and then, but I think the neighbours, not that we have many, would be a tad upset if run through the night. It's one noisy beast.
I haven't a clue as to old it is. Hope it's of a bit of interest.

Nope, it's a bit too cold for me up north..  Better Wheel Horse shopping down south as well

Thank you very much, loads more to come..

This is not part of the repairs but I thought I'd show you all anyway..

I thought I would have a bash as seeing how much double curvature I could create without having to cut and weld which is how I did the lower corners of the hood..

It gives me hope that should I ever have to remake top corners of a hood they shouldn't be too bad to shape
