Ok, that’s really good to know that it’s strong enough just mounted on one side!
-
Good ideas David. I’ve been contemplating some sort of display stand like that. Part of the challenge is the engine mount tab has been cut away from one side of the engine. I don’t really like the idea of suspending it with all the weight on one side without some sort of secondary bracket that makes contact with the bottom or some other part on the engine to give it some more stability.
my engine is currently stuck so I’ll have to take it all apart as some point to free up the piston if I wanted to demonstrate movement of al the parts.

I’ve had good luck with McMaster and even the local Ace Harware stores here in the US for Phillips Fillisters in stainless steel.
-
Yep, same here but in the evenings and on the weekends it’s hard to stay away from checking in on you guys!
-
Yep, that is my one hang-up as well. It doesn’t cover up visibility to the parts too badly but a little. If I do end up using this tank I’ll just attach the condenser to the recoil cover at the 9 or 10 o’clock position. I’ve seen several engines set up with the condenser attached at this location, like this Tiny Tiger. I might just use the tank temporarily since it does make for a nice convenient way to display it and keep it from falling over or getting damaged. I can then work on making a nicer display with a custom bracket later.

Just spent some time on the outboard. I’m just going to need to get in a rhythm and pick away at it a little at a time - so tedious!
-
Ahhhh, yes you had to bring up the outboard... I still need to get back to that one. Maybe I should hold off on the Mono and make some more progress on the outboard and the other saw first. Self control.... it’s too easy to get distracted and partially into several of these projects.
It looks like the green paint on my Mono is adhered pretty well to the engine parts but seems pretty flaky on the aluminum handle so hopefully that won’t be too much trouble.
-
Seeing your Mono coming along so nicely is inspiring me to maybe go “Mono y Mono” and take mine out and start working on it. I’m not a big fan of the bright neon green paint on mine but there is enough there to probably keep it original. I will need to repaint the chain cover and the recoil housing. I’m planning to also remove the paint from all the engine pieces and maybe take the remaining flaked paint off the main handle and just leave it with a brushed Aluminum finish. It might look nice having both handles bare metal. Really don’t like when they painted everything, wires and all...
-
That’s nice! The knob looks made for it!
On the decals... I remember it took a couple weeks to get mine, they might make to order.
-
I still need to get you that decal for the side cover...
-
Thanks, I’m very happy to have found this one - they definitely don’t seem to come up very often.

Here’s the cut-away engine after a minimally invasive cleanup job and installation of a recoil starter reel, spring, rope and knob. I’m almost 100% sure I want to display it on this gas tank but I’m still contemplating it just a little bit. I will probably do a bit more thorough cleaning later. Still debating also making a cut-away gear box to go with it. (I’ll fix the rope knot too, got excited to take photos before realizing I didn’t finish the knob)

A couple of us have reached out to Captain with offers but I’m not sure if he’s responded yet.
-
Funny, I’ve been on the hunt for these as well but couldn’t justify buying a massive amount. The stainless Fillisters are easy to find. I was tempted to buy a few and a black oxidizing kit to see if that might get them close enough...
-
Definitely don’t drill out the rivet on the recoil cover.
-
Good timing on the parts diagram. I need to find parts 18, 19 and 20 for my other saw project. I’m probably just going to grab a NOS toggle switch that looks the same.
Cool! I have a very incomplete one of these with the 13B. It’s it horrible shape and is all eaten up like that from acid and it’s really corroded. Looks to have lived most of its life outside in the rain half buried in mud. It’s interesting on my newest 15SLA the air cleaner has a rubber 90 degree elbow that attaches in the hole and then fits over the throat of the carb, kind of like a spark plug boot. Looks original and the mounting hole in the air cleaner end isn’t large enough to fit over the carb like this design on the 13B version.

Curious, has anyone heard any more info on when we can/should/how pay the 2020 MOM membership fees? Definitely don’t want anything bad to happen to this forum, got to keep our memberships up to help fund it and keep it going!

I was just telling JustO&R that I recently picked up a Tiny Tiger with the larger style tank to try to round out the generators in my collection. If I had known this Nichols generator was going to become available I would have kept my TT $$$ and been in a much better position to step up in a bigger way on this. It’s always a timing problem...
-
Amen to that! This forum is a blast and I look forward to checking it out daily, hourly sometimes, to see what everyone is working on and who has found a cool engine or tool. The friends and experiences are what it’s all about! It’s been fun having you back in action too! Fun to also see a few others like Fishnuts joining the fun...
-
Yep, I was just scrounging through old saws and parts trying to find the cleanest pieces I can since this will be a full restore job. Would like it to all match as much as possible with new paint and decals (hopefully new decals, we will see what Titch comes back with).
Definitely saving the NOS parts for the rarer items.
-
I’m still working too. So far it’s been business as usual where I am even though it seems like stuff is shutting down all around the area. I’m still going to the office every day...
-
Mine has a Type 189 engine.
-
Am I correct to assume this saw uses a typical chainsaw muffler, the one with the little spark arrestor screen inside?

He definitely knows how to pop in at just the right time
