howardman got a reaction from S1g in Project Budget Sachs Diesel Howard Gem.
Looking good.....I am looking forward to seeing this one finished and running ..the Sachs engine has quiet a reputation for starting difficulties but if anyone can get one running well you can. Super job on the dowdeswell ..its been a while since i logged in so enjoying the excellent photos of your machines.

When I had a proper look at the bonnet I decided
that it would need flatting back as there was some
contamination im guessing in the primmer.
Today I also managed to get the under belly
sanded and primed. Just going to need a small
skim of stopper and then it should be ready for top
coat.
A while back I purchased a load of N.O.S badges
for Gem's, every one up till now had been fine,
however when I peeled back the cellophane layer
on the clutch one it peeled some of the paint off, I
don't know why, but as luck would have it I had
another new one that was good.

howardman got a reaction from Old Tankman in Pennsylvania Panzer
Saw one of those at a small show over here in ireland last summer. the owners kids were driving it around ...its drives well. He was working in the states for a few years as a carpenter and took it as part payment from an elderly woman he was doing work for. I have a picture of it on my phone ....meant to post it up .

howardman reacted to S1g in Howard Hako
Thanks pat, as I said I've resurrected this project to mainly give me practice at spraying again. Am particuarly aware that with having a bonnet the Sachs gem is going to have a bigger surface area than most to show up the flaws. The deadline for the Sachs is October but I've also got to get another one finished before then as well, plus a very busy full time job, plus a family life, plus....
Got to admit this Hako is making a nice change to the sheer enormity of a gem.

Nice display , you seem to be making good progress. I am looking forward to see the sachs diesel project as i picked up one of those engines up a few months back...owner gave up on trying to start it and put a kohler on instead.

howardman reacted to Wristpin in Mystery Powered Barrow
Looks as though it could br a combined centrifugal clutch and vari-speed pulley . There would be some sort of mechanism to take up the slack or apply tension to the belt to alter its position in the pulley to effect the change of speed, possibly controlled by the heavy cable and lever on the left hand handle bar. An image of what ever is under the guard on the left may give a clue.

howardman reacted to S1g in Mystery Powered Barrow
Hi Pat, I worked on one of these many years ago. I seem to recall that
it may of been made by Stothert & Pitt? Had a lot of trouble stopping the carb leakin due to the angle of the engine, in the end I had o resort to a new carb for the customer.

howardman reacted to Stormin in Hayters for shillings
Good to have something to do in retirement, Colin. Despite the popular belief some of the younger generation have, my lot included, we pensioners don't have money thrown at us. Myself I help out at a friends farm when needed. Helps with the bits and pieces I want for my tractors.
I think most of us would like more workshop and storage space. I know I would. Would one of the local farmers let you have somewhere to store things in return for a bit of help? No harm in asking.
Have a good Christmas. Norm.

howardman reacted to Potash123 in Hayters for shillings
As you may have gathered from my posts, I restore mowers etc for a hobby. I have bought for £50 and turned an Osprey into £300 in a few weeks. The money helps but I get satisfaction doing these in my retirement. Bit shocked to find two modern non running Hayters just sold on ebay for £4.20 pence. There are two rough cuts ( 21's ) on there at the moment for £39 each. Obviously the time of year is causing the slump. Wish I had some storage room as these mowers are normally snapped up during the rest of the year. I get offered tractors and machines from local farmers, but again not enough room. No questions here, just thought I would add to a quiet forum this time of year. Merry Christmas. Colin.

Can't see why it would cost any where near that money, try someone that does waterjetting or laser cutting should get one made for under £100 if you have any problems send them to me I have some good contacts

howardman got a reaction from S1g in G621 Very early Rote Ho Gem 1943
Haven't logged in for months but great to see you back on the gems.I Like the early metal wheels ....i put the later type metal wheels on my bj gem and sprayed them black. My howard 180 twin is like yours unfinished ...the engine runs but i must fit a breather to the rocker cover ..too much pressure is forcing oil out /leaking.

howardman reacted to S1g in G621 Very early Rote Ho Gem 1943
Hi pat, nice to see you back. Re the wheels, after putting up the photos of the wheels I've had quite lengthy discussions with people who were around when these machines were newish. There seems to be no definitive answer as to what wheels were used and when. The early type here I've used for the time being on g206, unless I can turn up another early set I may have to use the later type on this gem, it may not be incorrect anyway as by 1944 the later type were definatley in use on allmost all gems accept the very rare few that came with pneumatics in those days.

I think that once you have a body you can fit either flange or base mounts without too much hassle.

howardman got a reaction from S1g in 1963 Howard Gem Twin Cylinder.
I am like you started the resto of the 180 degree twin version but its got left to one side for while now. Rebuilt engine and got it running but it was the toughest engine i ever had to get started. Loads of small issues ..leaks etc. Yours looks like it wouldn't take too much to finish.

howardman reacted to S1g in 1963 Howard Gem Twin Cylinder.
This is my resurrected project that I started many years ago on tractorbox, but due to a number of issues never got finished. I purchased this machine in 2009 as a very good runner after wanting one for years. Overall it was very sound just needed lots of silly niggles sorting.
Here's where I'm up to with it, but some things are going to need improving on.
