The spacers were made to approx 11/16" length, the wide washers are to prevent damage to the cover (two used per screw).
I had to order more screws (#6x32 2" long) as the first ones I ordered were too short, a set of these were sent to Paul for his Aquabug restoration.

Exactly as it would have been in the 60's, as shown in this Speedy Sprayer brochure (no O&R's present).

Nice to hear you found more parts from the trimmer, I have some of the small parts for those but sadly no cutter head, I intend to try & build one using a spare engine, will need to make a lot of the larger parts and see if I can find a modern cutter head that could be used with it, this is a long term project of mine.
It would be helpful to know the length of the aluminium tube(s), please could you let me know the size.

I do have this parts diagram for an earlier variant of the trimmer (known as the Power Whip), I can't see a trigger control on this version, but the diagram may help identify more parts you may still have.

Forget to mention before, looking at the first three digits of the serial number I can tell you that the engine from your trimmer was made in April 1977.

Here is what the Groomer Estate 400 in this thread would have looked like, sorry the picture isn't very good quality, I don't have any original documents for the majority of the AEP powered string trimmers.

Factory, I think that is what this trimmer looked like. Did some more scrounging in the other shop this af'noon for a Stover engine ring set and found the other aluminum tube, which is the fuel tank! I guess I have more to this than I had thought. It's been around here for 35 years or so and I never paid much attention to it. I'm thinking my son tore it apart in the mid 90's. I don't remember it ever having the cutter head, cover or shield though.

John I still need to complete quite a few unfinished projects here, before I make a start on that nice trimmer (or take anything else apart), maybe I should add some pictures anyway.

Nice find with the manual and EP Barrus advert, I seem to have the matching "illustrated literature" for that Orline hedgetrimmer.

@Webhead Do you have a before picture of the bar from your chainsaw, I'm yet to see a clear enough one to tell if they spelled it incorrectly originally on the bar, certainly the small round logo is spelt Bunyan.

The manual came from Alan Rogers at the Tractor World show last weekend, the advert from ebay.

I have some of the parts to the trimmer but not much. I have the aluminum intake tube that slips over the air intake adapter. Also a clamp that possibly held two aluminum tubes together. One was a fuel tank I'm guessing. I'd love to find another. There has to be one out there in good shape, or with a bad engine I could put my engine on.

The Groomer string trimmers (weed wacker) were made in the late 1970's by Advanced Engine Products Incorporated (formerly known as O&R), this was towards the end of AEP (O&R) as the company was dissolved in 1978. Hopefully someone will find a complete trimmer one day.

As you've noticed the 13B427 is a constant speed engine using the Tillotson HU38A carb, this is pre-calibrated for constant speed operation only and has no fuel/speed adjustments. The added primer button is for easier starting and the extra tube to the crankcase is to pulse the fuel pump.

I don't recommend looking at a standard parts diagram for the Tillotson carbs as they show all the bits not used on the HU38A, the diagram below is from the book "Small Air-Cooled Engines" 16th edition from Intertec Publishing, which has a small section for O&R/AEP engines, I don't want to add the rest as the current version of this book is still available and I don't want copyright problems.

The air filter would have been on the end of the tubing that made up the pole & handle for these trimmers, the engine stop/kill switch would have been on this handle too. Some models had another tube with handle used as the gas tank and others had a gas tank attached to the starter housing.

The trigger mentioned on the decal is indeed for releasing more cutting line on the trimmer head, they called this a "Touch-n-go" trigger. Other models had a "Bounce-N-Feed" trimmer head, this version released more cutting line when lightly bumped on the ground.

So the gear box was little bit of a pain. Getting the gaskets right took some time and ended up cutting quite a few until it was right. (looks like someone threw confetti in my office now) A gear was rubbing on the metal separation piece then something was binding just a bit when all of the screws were tight. Nice and smooth now. This engine was done and gone through already because the gaskets looked new, inside was clean as a whistle and still some engine assembly grease noticeable around the bearings. Compression is so good there was a question whether or not to even open the engine but it was worth checking anyway. I must've quit at the gearbox because of the need for making gaskets as the gearbox definitely wasn't gone through before.

Tried using Simple Green. It removed some debris but not all. Then on to vinegar. Nope, no results. Next was 2 psi of air pressure. Nope. Figured it was a lost cause. It got the drill. Back together and it's running. Started quite easily, maybe 6 pulls after pushing the primer button. Thanks to all for the help on this. My friend's eyes lit up when he saw it running. On to the next project...I think I've got a mid 60s vintage O&R around here somewhere...

Started with the gearbox. It's not bad at all since the original grease in there is still very soft. The 2 gaskets are very dry and brittle and broke coming out. I'll have to make some replacements. Luckily the 3 shaft seals for the chuck are soft and pliable, think they're still good so I'll just use them since finding a replacement would be difficult.

They go quick when there's a nice new engine available for it. Just need to finish the recoil but I'll do 3 or 4 at a time because once you get go'n on them it just seems to go smoother. The chrome on this cleaned up nice.
(probably get cancer from the crap that was inside from the chemicals run through it.)

This one is pretty much all done too except for the little rubber feet. Just need to pick up the hardware and attach them.

Got it all together with Terry's mount, which will get painted silver hammer tone once it warms up a bit.
The belt on there fits but a shorter wider belt will look better.

Eventually you will run into them. They should have changed the whole carb design but instead they just kept throwing on band aids like that check valve. The carb is the worst thing on these engines but maybe they were ahead of their time. Make stuff so it fails after a while so you need to get it fixed or buy a new one.

Some of them have the "Petro" name removed from the handle, a Japanese re-brand (Shingu) found it's way back to the US here.

Don't leave it too long Paul. The seller has someone interested in buying all the saws (about 8-10) . He is a dealer who will strip them all & sell as spares. They are mostly old Homelite & Danarm saws, so as spares are virtually non existent in the UK, that is a lucrative business

Here’s the latest addition, a nice Orline water pump. Needs a full clean up but I don’t think it’s been used much, if at all.
