    Yellow Mower Challenge!

Nothing major as far as progress really, but have continued working on the Grass Catcher for now. Completely dismantled it to it's component parts which are not that substantial in strength. The canvas edges were reinforced with wire and secured under a folded edge around the base panel. The edges carefully prised opened up to free the canvas so I could start to unpick the seams with a 'Stitch Ripper' tool. Canvas has arrived and is a perfect match in weight and colour, and have enough material to make 2 in case I screw up- As was shown in previous pics, the front Rod Tangs on each end were in a bad way, so I searched around for some new rod to replace it. Found some at my local 'Drill-Service' stockist, 2metres of original PS Stubbs 1/4" diameter Silver Steel. Got a discount too, as it had a slight bend. The galvanised base panel had a few dents which I tapped out ok after a good clean with a scourer and came up real good with very little rusting- I've cut the new canvas by using the original as a pattern ready for sewing up, but have now had to order a Sewing Awl to make it easier for my hands/joints. If all goes well, I should have this part finished in just over a week. Hoping the engine parts will be here by then.

In the Lab today washing hundreds of bags of dig content from the various levels. Most bags contain some shell, flint nappings, various amounts of bone, some pieces almost as big as the fist and, every once in awhile a arrowhead, point, or tool that was missed in the collection process. The arrowheads I find in the content bags are generally smaller than a quarter dollar. We are not sure what these small arrowheads were made for as the shafts would have been so much bigger than the heads (don't even go there mates), it is possible they were made for juvenile bows, or as jewelry, or possibly as practice or competition as they would be very difficult to produce. Also a sizable piece of deer jaw was found deep in the site and may date back 10 to 12 thousand years, as well as a fossilized snake.

    Project "Why Not"

To get the column up though the top of the dash I needed to make a hole a bit bigger, so I quickly spun up this bung on the lathe. It fit's like so.. The small hole is for the "drill bit" bit of the cutter to slot into. Letting the dash cool down halfway through the cut. The amount of swarf that came out was amazing! A big hole.. With a bit of the body mount sliced out.. And the bottom of the dash surround notched a bit.. The steering box ended up right where I wanted it.. The steering box mount taking shape. That should work well The mount has now had two captive bolts and one captive nut added.. Both ends have been boxed in and the welds cleaned up, I just forgot to take any photos of it.. Likewise I have made a start on shortening the steering column but also forgot to take any photos.. I'd best remember Monday

    Project "Why Not"

Wow, a year old already! How time fly's!! Still, a year from starting to test driving is quite good for me Not much to report, Thursday WN went back up on the bench something my back is very much regretting! Even though there were three of us lifting! So I spent Thursday doing some gentle paint stripping and knocking out a few dents. I managed to get a bit more done yesterday, the fender pan this time. as you can see the fender pan does not quite reach the foot plates! Some more recycling, this was part of a Spear and Jackson sign. Two plates tacked on.. Both sides done and on the bench to be fully welded. As you can see a little trimming of length is needed.. If all goes to plan and my back sorts it's life out I should have the fender pan finished Monday just in time for a new steering box to turn up that Chris has kindly sent me... Thanks mate
