I needed to hide in the shed

Cut the posts and split them yesterday. Now stacked ready to throw on the fire and keep me toasty.

Now the disruption of Christmas is over its back to the shed. This is a Raider 10 thats been in the back of my woodstore for a few years and during my rebuild on the Raider 12 ive been piling bits together to put it together. Had a bit of a late start as i had to clear all the sawdust after sawing up a load of wood during the last couple of days. This is as far as ive got today apart from the chassis is now sanded down to bare metal

Hi. I bought this for my son as he is interested in tractors and was interested to find this forum. The cutting deck is a bit rusty but for now I have removed this. The front wheel in the picture is the wrong one but fortunately the seller still had the original. My son is 8 so I moved the set forward and made up a pedal extension so he could drive it. I have since made a better job of this (but only slightly) ! While he can drive it OK now I am considering fitting a centrifugal clutch and wondered if anyone else had done similar. I'd like to keep it as near to standard as possible so don't want to go too mad. With no engine braking I will need to fit a better brake. The original isn't working and I haven't managed to strip it down as the bolts going into the gearbox case are pretty stuck. I think attempting to remove them might involve stripping the threads so I will have to have to try a bit harder. One thought it to fit a brake to the power take off which might work for the time being at least.

Given that this machine is a smaller lawn tractor than a larger garden tractor, 8 years old should be fine with supervision. I think your idea to expose him to other interests is a very good one, but don't forget to involve him in the basic workings and maintenance aspects as well.

Great little project. I think it is good to get the little ones involved at an early age. I have fitted a hydraulic brake to a westwood before. I used a pushbike hydraulic front brake master cylinder and caliper to get much better brakes on the standard transition brake disc.

    Wheel mod.

Got the arms finished and fitted this afternoon. Wheels are back on and raising the front by 1" now gives a plough depth of 6" or 7-1/4". Depends on the position of the tool bar in the slot hitch below. Bar fully in and using the second hole gives the 6". Using the first hole, the one at the end, gives the 7-1/4". Next job is to fit a depth wheel to the plough.

As Chris pointed out, I made a bit of an error with the arms. Today I set too to correct it. But how to drill holes in the other ends accurately? I don't possess vee blocks. Can't do them in the lathe. So I had to think of some other way. I finally did them as below in the photo. Wasn't exactly easy keeping things square, but taking my time things came out OK. I used one of the extension sleeves as a guide for a drill to spot the centre. Then I drilled the spindle using three different sized drills, finishing with the tapping size. Next the holes were threaded 10mm and the stub axle on the arms cut off to 3/4" long. See photo below. The next job was to shorten the trailer stub axles to 1/2" long. Cut them down to 5/8", then into the lathe to be faced down, drilled and bored out 3/4" I.D. x 1" deep. Below all ready to weld up.
