    Winter Project

Had a few hours on the green engine today, it proved a problem to start after cleaning the carb so after fitting new points and plug cap and cranking it with an electric drill petrol started running out the carb. Another strip down revealed a hole in the float so with that changed it finally fired up. Had it running for about an hour with no smoke or rattles so the engine sounds good but still having trouble with the idle so I'm going to fit another carb tomorrow and see if it improve's.

    Vandals!

We had one on a lawn ranger engine that blew up, just looked in the box full of the broken parts but can't find it, we may have sold it. Will have another look tomorrow.

    Cat D4D

As far as I know the 7J D4 was built in the US between 1939 and 1943. The first D4D was not made until 1963 with a series number starting 78A. The D4D, series 88A, was being built in Glasgow when I worked there in 1965.

Sorry , i don't think that is a D4D serial number . It is possibly a casting number . On the earlier D4s serial number is on a plate on the engine and also on the top left hand side of the flat back area of the machine on a small plate . Number should be stamped in where the plate mounts , problem is , if the machine has rippers or winch fitted , serial number will be covered by them . Number should read D4D then series 85A or 79J this series number shows where it was built then there will be the actual serial number

    C-125 needing some TLC.

Trans flush and refilled. Also engine oil changed. When I came to adjust the governor, I found the arm was loose on the spindle. That was because the pinch bolt was not tight. When I came to tighten it, the nut fell off. Along with that end of the bolt. New bolt fitted and the governor works as it should. The tractor is already now to go to it's new home. Being collected some time next week. I'd like to thank those who have given me advice and support. Much appreciated.

    Winter Project

I’ve put the carbs through the ultrasonic cleaner and assembled one and fitted to the engine so i now have one nice running engine. I can say I’m well pleased with the engine as ive owned it for about six years and its been under the bench ever since. I feel a big hurdle crossed today.

That bit is Nigel, but it was still not charging. So I decided to have a look at the stator. Took off the engine cover etc. Undoing the screws holding the screen on, strange noises emanated from behind the flywheel. No need to guess what was making them. Removing the fly wheel revealed a sorry stator and magnets in a right state. If you'll pardon the pun. Bit of a mess and no wonder it wasn't charging. All is not lost though. A Raider 10 engine I rebuilt a while ago, has donated it's flywheel and stator. Tomorrow I'll reassemble things and hopefully all will be well.

    Vandals!

I've been doing an engine overhaul on a 1980s Tecumseh 7hp iron block vertical shaft engine for another forum member; valves, ignition, charging system etc and just when I thought that I was nearing the end I've found that some vandal has carved a chunk out of the air cleaner backplate and canister. Those parts were still current on Atco 24s etc using the horizontal shaft Tecumseh H50/60 right up to the 1990s so there should be a few around, but not, it appears, in the UK . In the USA, yes, with the appropriate carriage, duty and vat etc., but not over here. If anyone has a backplate and canister to sell, please contact me - all reasonable expenses paid . Otherwise I will have to get the welding gear out, not really my forte!
