Search for Colwood on this site and you will find out more info from previous posts. With older machines like this, you just have to gather snippets of information by searching.

Nothing special Norm. Fan fixed to Sprocket on the Crank. Fan for additional cooling due partially enclosed compared to the exposed situation it would normally be in when fixed to a motor bicycle.

Had to check the 172cc engine out in the Books. That was an up-rated engine first produced in 1924. The first prototype engine went to a French Racing team (Monet Goyon) and it powered them to winning the French GP of that year. Known as the  'Sports' initially, then 'Sports' with the Auto Lubrication system, then Super Sports T.T and lastly the 'Brooklands'.

However, I digress. This engine is the first 2 stroke 269cc engine designed and built by Villiers (in 1913). Fitted to a multitude of Motor cycle makes, direct belt or chain drive initially.
Known as the Mk I (should be roman numerals) up to 1916, then Mk II, Mk III. Mk IV is claimed to be the first introduction of their Flywheel Magneto, as prior to this, they used an external chain driven Bosch Mag, but the war got in the way of supply.

This engine,  the MkV  was discontinued from Sept 1922.  They built 3 other engine designs (from 1923) -  150, 250 and 350cc as the Mk VI.

So everything hangs on this being in working order. It is complete and has the original Carb with it. Also has the Villiers patent Free Engine Clutch.
All these bits will need to work ok when fixed.
Good news is that my concoction of fluid  for loosening bit up worked on the siezed piston/crank after just 1 hour ! and found it was 'freed up' by accident !.
So need to remove that nut on the end by the Fan first without any stress on the crank, then pull the cylinder to check the bore/rings and piston.
Might have a source of used spare parts too. Also may have a replacement option for the HT Coil (same style).

The choke flap is fully closed so I don't believe it is the issue with this. The tank to carb gasket does seem to weep a spot of fuel so my thinking is that it is also sucking air and preventing the fuel from being drawn up from the upper tank chamber. Am I right in assuming this ?

Fitted new tank gasket & still the same. Looked again at the choke & although it looked closed there was a tiny gap both sides of the flap. Slight mod to the set up and it closes tight now & started second pull. I should have checked it properly, thanks guys

The fact that the "hand over"  treatment worked suggests an air leak somewhere.
The gauze ore cleaner shouldn't cause a problem as it was a standard fitment on Industrial Commercial spec engines.

My 1969 Bolens 1476 Hydrostatic with the 14 hp S-14D Wisconsin has a 48" shaft drive deck that I can mow the cow pasture and not have any issues, three foot grass isn't a problem, I have 27"x 9.50"- 15" Duro Frontier All Terrain tires on the back and original Goodyear 5.30-8 tires on the front. The hydro unit holds 11 quarts of transmission fluid inside a solid cast iron rear end and trans axle and weighs a little over 1,000 ponds without a deck or implements; I have two of these. My 1973 Allis Chalmers 416 Shuttle has 48" belt drive right hand discharge deck and a 16 hp single cylinder cast iron Kohler K341 engine mated to a 4 speed Hydro, Yep, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear is both infinite forward and reverse. Rear tires are 25"x 10"-12" Carlisle All Trails with 25 pounds of weights on each wheel with 4" axle extenders to give it a real wide track or you can remove them and install them on the outside to mount a set of dual wheels, Fronts are smooth ribbed 16x6.50-8 for easy turn and easy on the turf. This machine was only built one year and I have two other A/C 416s true Hydro units as well. These are the two machines I use to mow this year, next year I will charge two more for mowing duties. This keeps them up and running, but not overburdened.

In my experience 90% of the time cleaning the points will get the spark back. Hope the carb is ok as that type can be a bit of a  pain to work on and tend to leak fuel when the engine is not running.

Returning home from R.P.T. and Biddenden, due to the A1 being closed for some reason, I had to use the M1 and M6. Mile after mile of roadworks and 50mph limits.
All this work is for the so called Smart Motorways. What's smart about doing away with the hard shoulder? How many people will be killed and injured when they have nowhere to go, if experiencing a breakdown, puncture etc?
I think it's down right stupid and dangerous, if not criminal.

My little "red nose" .. Recovered from a field in Bremen Germany where it worked all its years... Used 90% plus of the original parts on the build part of which was done in Germany then part reworked by me in the UK when I brought it over... 1958 so it's a very early 108L Junior, single cylinder, air cooled Porsche tractor.. Just good fun but could still work all day without a problem...

Not quite so, you can retime the ignition using the Before Top Dead Centre figure from the engine spec in relation to the points starting to open. I believe the setting for a JAP80 is 25degrees or 7/64" BTDC. Points gap 18thou and plug 25thou

Finally got the little JAP 80 engine running today but removing the flywheel was hell's own job. They don't have a keyway on the shaft so the shaft and flywheel are tapered and once on they want to stay on. I had to drill into the ally flywheel right next to the shaft to release it's clamp on the shaft. Luckily I drilled into the shaft a bit. I used this to re-align the  flywheel, as there is no way of knowing which position is correct without a keyway.
