Had a few hours on the green engine today, it proved a problem to start after cleaning the carb so after fitting new points and plug cap and cranking it with an electric drill petrol started running out the carb. Another strip down revealed a hole in the float so with that changed it finally fired up.
Had it running for about an hour with no smoke or rattles so the engine sounds good but still having trouble with the idle so I'm going to fit another carb tomorrow and see if it improve's.

I’ve put the carbs through the ultrasonic cleaner and assembled one and fitted to the engine so i now have one nice running engine.
I can say I’m well pleased with the engine as ive owned it for about six years and its been under the bench ever since.
I feel a big hurdle crossed today.

    Thanks Norm, Nigel.
Soldered the 2 halves of the tank together, but left the end plates for now, as need access. Much of the work over the last 6 weeks has been doing fiddly parts.
Because this project is all 'Scratch Built'', I want to keep the parts as scale size to the original.
The water outlet/valve is an example and is a simple 'Bottle' style valve running in guides. The joint faces are metal to metal (no seals)-

The faces that contact the inside/outside of the tank are contoured to a close fit.
The weighted lever sits 'over centre' when closed,  which applies pressure on the Spring Stainless rod and so on the valve face/seat to improve the water tight seal.
Another view to show the valve/seat and the fabricated outlet with correctly bolted (12BA) flange. This will lead to a Sprinkler Bar as per original-

Hardwood support legs finished to size. A range of steel coach bolts with square/hex nuts, and an alternative flanged outlet elbow for supply to the Traction Engine tank.
The ball on the end of the pump handle is 1/16"  (1.6mm) diameter-

Hose hooks are 0.010" (.25mm) shim steel annealed for drilling and bending, then re hardened and tempered to spring grade. Screws are 14BA-

Finally got the wheels done last night and are retained by blind 'Top Hat' caps with a cross pin, as per the full size. Pins are 3/64" (1.25mm) -

Going to be a shame to cover this in paint

I’ve taken the carbs off the 2 engines to clean, also found a K141 but. That wouldn’t start either so i removed the carb to find a stuck inlet valve also found the carbs knacked. .
I then went and sat indoors with a cuppa and made some gaskets,

Great job on the wheels Chris! My RJ rear wheels were like that, only they had holes all the way round  Hours spent with the mig and a grinder had them sorted out

After moving everything in  the sheds I’ve found 2 Kohler K91 engines ,  by the looks of them they haven’t run for a while.
The green one I bought from Paul last year and the black one I’ve had years and can’t remember where it  came from.
The green one is missing the recoil starter and spinning it with the drill i found it had no spark, removed the points and cleaned and regapped and tried again, i did manage to get it to fire a couple of times but that’s all.
I’m going to strip the carb and put it in the altrasonic cleaner.
The black one was much the same although I did get it to run briefly so that one’s  carb is going in the cleaner’
While i was digging the cleaner out i found an Aspera engine cover with the same recoil starter but no cup so if anyone has one I’m looking.

Had another look at the rim today as to patching it up but it’s like tissue paper round the outer edge so i came up with an idea that was only going to cost some labour...
Starting with a good rim, cut it in half and then cut the rusty one in half weld the two good half’s together.

Went and collected 8 wheels and 2 seats from the sand blasters this  morning, they also sprayed them with 2k primer.
They were in a poor shape and very rusty so I’m very pleased with them and saved me a lot of work.

I’ve been sorting out front wheels for Bill and Ben.
I wanted to change the little 4 inch to narrow 8 inch, the original front spindles are too short so i fitted C series and they are too long
The bearings in the 8 inch wheels are one piece with an 1 inch ID and the Wheelhorse flange bearings are a direct fit .
Next job was to cut down the spindles and drill the centre hole deeper and cut a 3/8” thread.
All the wheels are now at the sand blasters.

Put everything back together this morning. Fired up the engines and tested for current from the replacement stator. Showing a nice 30amps.

Checked across the battery terminals and did I see 14amps? No!   I think I'll have to get another rectifier or two.

Thank you. Those dimensions are spot on. I will give Bearing Boys a ring on Monday.

This was posted a while back under a Polaris Pole thread. Gets painful to watch after a while but it's worse when you're actually do'n it yourself.
