Project "Why Not"

Recommended Posts

Paint the diff, Ian. Easier than having to keep polishing it.

It's been painted Norm, just not with a colour :D

Its pink

Oh no it's not

Looking good Ian I've just bought a cabinet blaster my self

Thanks James, your find the blast cabinet very handy

I've got a similar cabinet and have added an additional internal strip light and dust extraction connected to a Henry vacuum cleaner. Wondered why it was fogging up the other day and found that a bit of bubble wrap had got sucked onto the back vent!  The draw back with these table mounted ones seems to be that the blasting medium does not flow back to the suction pipe and I have to keep tipping the cabinet to get it where its needed. Perhaps a central position for the pick up is what's needed ?

My cabinet does the same, I just move the suction pipe..

The black paint for the rear axle and a few other parts turned up I thought I'd get it painted as it was a nice warm day for a change..

The ally diff case was clear coated at the same time as the black.. Well, it will save me having to keep polishing it default_biggrin.png

"Clear Lacquer... For when that bald patch just isn't shiny enough" default_laugh.png

WN943_zps22s4ie1w.jpg

The front brakes and steering were fully pulled apart for painting..

WN947_zpsooe4roif.jpg

WN946_zpsbco2ifk0.jpg

Some interesting masking opportunity's were presented by the front hubs/brake disks!

WN948_zpszndb3x1i.jpg

Painted and masking tape removed...Any paint on the disks that shouldn't be there will soon get worn off by the brake pads.

Why Not's engine was lifted up onto the bench Thursday, thanks for your help Karl and Matt.

Coils, carbs, wiring and radiator were removed so I could make a start on cleaning the engine up for painting.. Oh, and to sort out a couple of small oil leaks!

How about an 'engine turned' effect on the dash, Ian? Then clear coat?

I thought about that, but I think I will be going back to the "brushed" look.

Well, the paint finally arrived yesterday so here's a kind sneak preview..

The shade is Ford Cardinal red, an 80's shade which looks like it changes shade quite a bit depending on light..

Evening all, well the air around the workshop has been red of late... Nope, not people getting angry, chassis painting instead :D

Two coats of Ford Cardinal red and a couple of clear coats..

WN959.jpgWN960.jpg

Even though the engine cradle was painted at the same time, a different light makes it look a different colour!

WN961.jpg

Out in the sun the red looks quite bright and contrasts well with the black radiator mount.

WN963.jpg

The engine after 2 of 4 coats of black engine enamel.

WN965.jpg

4 coats of black done and the engine looks a lot better..  I  didn't see any point in masking up the valve covers as they need to be stripped of silver paint and polished up..

WN966.jpg

Just so I could say I've started putting WN back together the king pins/spindles and rear axle were bolted on.

WN967.jpg

WN968.jpg

When the engine and wheels go back on Mnday I will really feel like I'm getting somewhere with the reassembly... Well, until I have to start on the bodywork :D

Don't think Nigel is the right shape for jumping around like a Kangaroo.  Rolling around maybe.  Better go and :hide: now.

I'm saying nowt :D

A big moment was reached yesterday... With the help of Nigel, Matt, Dennis and Dennis's engine hoist (thanks guys) the engine went back in with only the minimum of paint damage..

WN972.jpgWN973.jpg

To add a bit of detail the GL500 badges were cleaned up an repainted..

Have a bonus photo just plucked from the video footage..  The engine in mid flight :)

I do have some ideas on decals, I just need to decide on exactly what

Taking WN to Newby would be cool, it's just the distance that's the problem..

Fast enough for sure, but it would need a much bigger fuel tank!

Not much to show really other than lot's of parts being painted red or black..

WN987.jpg

WN988.jpg

The valve covers were swapped for the one off my spare CX engine as furry is easier to clean...

WN989.jpg

Lot's of polishing later...

Well... Everything I need to finish off the bodywork has arrived, filler, primer, topcoat etc but I found a slight problem!

As I started to clean up the fender pan I kept finding more and more stress cracks! I'm not surprised as WN has had a huge amount of being thrashing about and the arch bits of the fender pan were not as strong as they could of been..

The hard part was coming up with a way of adding strength that didn't change the look of the fender pan... Until...

A few welding burn marks!

WN995.jpg

I need to tidy up a few welds but you won't see the strengthening frame unless you on your hands and knees looking under the arch..   Oh, and it's added a huge amount of strength that should stop things from flexing :)

More brilliant progress mate

Thanks James, shame it's such slow progress..

The underside of the fender pan has been cleaned up and red oxided..

WN996.jpg

Filler on, filler off!     I hate fillering but it's got to be done..

WN999.jpg

WN1000.jpg

The bonnet got a light skim of filler too..

WN1001.jpg

The extra cooling slot I cut in the front were made wider so they match the originals, a new bit of "grill mesh" was fitted behind as well..

Looking good Ian, you'll be glad you did it when the colour goes on

Your right there mate, the fender pan was a bit "up and down" in places.. I'm aiming for my best bit of bodywork/paint job yet with WN..

Just a quick update as I'm off to the workshop shortly..

The fillering continues, the fender pan is still a way off yet but is getting there..

WN1005.jpg

The top of the bonnet/hood had got to the point where it looked good and felt smooth..

WN1003.jpg

WN1004.jpg

Only one way to find out, hit it with primer.. Which I did and left it to dry overnight.

WN1007.jpg

Much to my shock the next day (yesterday) I found only a couple of high spots, a small low spot and a few pin holes in the filler..

So... More sanding, 3 good coats of primer, flatten back the primer and hit iot with 3 more good coats..... A bit of wet and dry work today will leave a very nice smooth finish for the top coats :)

WN1010.jpg

I have been working on the smaller panels as well, a bit of sun to help dry them..

WN1008.jpg

Quite fun as I had to keep moving bits inside to avoid rain/hail/snow showers!   Here's the next shower approaching!
