Here's a photo of a Howard Bolens 1886, it's a beast of a garden tractor.

As we say here in the States, it will turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change At full lock, the front and rear tires have about 1" clearance between them. The LKs came in 5 and 6 Hp versions, all of which were manual start. The early ones in 1964-66 (models 910-01 and 910-02) had a 6 Hp Briggs. In 1966 there was also the model 911-01 with a 6 Hp. Lawson engine. From 1967-1970 they all had 5 and 6 Hp Lawson engines. I have it's 'big brother' a 1964 Estate Keeper 7, and they are a lot of fun to operate. Takes a little getting used to it, but after than it's loads of fun. The are also great mowers as the deck is out front and cuts the grass before any wheels run over it. While you can't classify them as garden tractors, there was a front blade available for the LKs, and the EKs had a snowcaster available in addition tot he blade. I have not yet had a chance to collect my latest Bolens due to my illness over the Christmas Period but hope to get it organised shortly. In the meantime I taken some photographs of my Bolens catalogue showing examples of a Lawn Keeper plus some details. I watched several videos on these models and the articulation on these are incredible. .

(http://myoldmachine.com/store/) p.s rangers and rj's and suburbans (age of tractor your after) are very rare (and valuebale fully restores in the uk rangers can go just below of £1000 or i have been told) but you can get one like mine for 300-400 ish, in the uk as they where not imported by wheel horse only privately i was very lucky to find mine from charlie (charlie smith) on here that was in the condition i liked, i saw one other on fleebay but it was too far away for me, so took me a while but it is possible, but as i said a started of with a newer 1990 wheel horse 227-5 not very popular but let me be creative with what i did. i said to my self that i would probably never own one but perseverance and i got one. pm me Juliette might be able to be for sale of you like her. topic thread (http://myoldmachine.com/topic/1318-some-of-you-might-know-me/#entry13618) james

The round hood wheelhorses are rare in UK , occasionally a lawn ranger will rear its hooves and show up for sales &you may have to wait & be patient . The round hoods will command more money when buying . Check out Ebay as most of us do as garden tractors often come up for sale there. C series or raider are the most popular , when buying a tractor be mindful that there are lawn tractors & garden tractors and there are limitations with lawn tractors in what they will do when you want to work them Good luck Ask as many questions here on Mom as possible before you make your purchase , And a purely optional thing you may want to consider is become a supporter here at MOM , for just the price of less than a packet of ciggies by becoming a supporter of the forum you will get a years supporter membership & this will give you extra benefits of this forum , as many other members have found out . Nice project! Can't wait to see what you do with it. I have a larger one ( The Stickler ) and thought about using a hydraulic motor to power it through a 25:1 gearbox and attaching it to the bucket of my backhoe. With the screw pointing down, the logs can be poked with the screw as they lay on the ground. No lifting or moving them by hand required until they are done being split. Then use the front loader to scoop and pile them up. Just another hairbrain project in my head which I have all the parts for but haven't done the work to put it together.

Went to a stationery engine gas-up local to me today, apart from the small engines there were a couple of big one's set up and running in the barn. In the corner was a Kinkade garden tractor that took my eye never seen one before, had two steel wheels on the front with one having a Villiers engine inside it, it had a tool frame with all the kit, plough. tines, ridger ect. there was even a couple of seeders hanging from the roof.

Iain, I am really pleased I got the LK though I wish the lady was also part of the deal! I have been contacted from a fellow US LK owner who offered some help on sourcing elusive parts for the LK. He was amazed that Bolens sold them over here. I will tell him that there are at least 2 in the UK that I am aware of (Chris' mate). I have to say what really persuaded me to buy it was the captivating plastic garden seat! Daniel, Yes that's the one. I have attended some assertiveness courses recently to assert my authority with the missus. I am plucking up the courage to tell her.......
