    Operation Bolens 600

I mechanically restored a Bolen's 800 about 6-7 years ago for my niece who called me today and wants me to come get it since they are moving. So I will have it in my hands in a couple of weeks. Let me know if anyone out there is interested in a classic. At the time I put a brand new 10HP Tecumseh in it and it ran great..... don't know what condition it is in now but will find out soon. Attaching some pics (TAKEN 6-7 YRS AGO). I love the look of this tractor and mower..... Will be available at my home in Brewster, NY

The bug has bitten once again...

First of all I'd like to say a massive thank you to Iain (slf-uk) as I wouldn't have been able to get it home without him. He very kindly offered to collect this wheel horse for me as my father is currently ill and is unable to drive. I am overwhelmed by his generosity, so thank you Iain. I have been wanting an auto wheel horse for a while and this one popped up advertised as not having a spark but it looked very tidy in the pictures. I liked the look of it a lot as it was original. I spoke to the owner and he was very honest and said that the wiring needed going through, I set my limit and luckily I won it. My plans are to try and source a hydraulic lift assembly for it and plumb it all in, it's definitely going to be a keeper. Anyway, I know you all want pictures so here it is: It also came with some weird sort of frame under the hitch, anyone know what this is and whether it's original? After I got it home I couldn't resist having a play and to see if I could get it running. I tested the coil, condenser and spark plug and they were all OK, cleaned and reset gap on the points but still no luck. I then ran a temporary wire giving the coil constant power from the battery and turned it over and we had a spark, put the plug in and off she went, a fair bit of smoke but it soon cleared, it hasn't been run in about 5 years so it was expected. The lack of spark was down to some awful wiring, here is an example of a join in the wire: This was just covered in insulation tape, the wiring is totally gone and I have decided I am going to make a new wiring harness. The only problems I'm having is finding a plug for the ignition, also what connectors do these plugs use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking, Tom

    Operation Bolens 600

Gentlemen, Sometime back, April 16 in fact, Andrew (Triumph66) sent me a PM over on the GTTalk forums. There was a 1962 Bolens 600 listed on eBay that he was interested in, and he wanted to know if I would assist him in getting it shipped to him if he bought it. One reason for his request was that it had been posted on the GTTalk forums and I told folks that I was VERY close to where it was located and that I could pick up and store it if anyone was interested. I replied that I would be more than glad to help, and Andrew got VERY interested. Since he was so interested, I decided to go take a look at it in person as it was only 20 miles from me. I took a good look at it and took it for a spin around the barn yard, and was VERY impressed with it. I asked the seller if he knew anything about the history of the tractor and he explained that he worked in a scrap yard, and that someone had brought it in to be scrapped Since he is a bit knowledgeable he set it off to the side so that they could sell it rather than scrapping it Why on earth someone would do that is beyond me. As you will see in the following pics, it's one of the nicest original tractors that you will ever see. It's absolutely beautiful It was listed with a starting bit of $300.00 and for one reason or another no one bid on it and Andrew STOLE it for the minimum bid. PM's started flowing fast and furious, and after wired bank funds finally arrived (that was a story in itself), I contacted the seller and made arrangements to pick it up. So today I hooked up the trailer and went to fetch the mighty Bolens. One thing that Andrew mentioned was maybe I could take a pic of the Bolens with an 'iconic' American building in the back round, I hope I succeeded :D I did stop on the way home to take a pic or two of some "iconic' bovines as well. You don't see them often in this part of the country, but if you ever watched the old Westerns, you should be able to figure out what they are :D So without further ado, the pics, starting from hooked up and ready to go, to back home with it one the trailer. I will be taking more pics as we go along and most likely a video or two as well.

Having just acquired one of these I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me a bit more about this bit of kit. I first saw one when I picked up my C-100 a few years back from a guy who had a collection of WHs and various attachments. Another appeared on a certain auction site a yearor so later but missing bits and rotting out. Picked this one up for £26 off same site last week with just surface rust and a straight forward resto (famous last words!) The vacuum hose end piece bolts onto a standard 42" WH side discharge cutting deck so designed specifically forthis. The ones I've seen have all been WH red (original paint) but this one has no ID tag or signs of having had a WH sticker on it anywhere. Can't track down manufacturer / model/ manual for it and have had no response to date on the RS forum so maybe it was made in Europe / UK. Hoping someone else remembers coming across one and may know something about them. Andy

Nice addition to a workshop . A Naerok RDM350M ? ... Good machine if so and popular with Model Engineers and University metalwork shops etc. back in 80s/90s. There are some Ball End Handles missing in the pic, but I assume you have them. Ignore the fact that the name is 'Korean' spelt in reverse, the quality back then was really quite good. I believe parts can still be obtained, albeit under other makers names. If you need reasonable quality/priced tooling for it, maybe check out Warco online (usual disclaimer).

    Yellow Mower Challenge!

Thanks Ian, although work and progress is slow. Fuel Tank done and finished with Fuel Proof Lacquer. Needs another week to cure fully. I changed the Pull Start layout again, did away with the inner Plate and made another Spacer Ring, so it is more like the original set up. Had to assume the finish was black. The original Rope was washed and the ends finished with Whipping to reduce fraying. The Handle cleaned by sanding, impregnated with Raw Linseed Oil and polished smooth- Throttle Cable routing done and stainless retaining clips made/fitted. It's rather a long 'S' type route, but it's smooth and there's no longer any strain where it enters the Carb. Lever is in good position too- Made new Blackened/ Oil hardened Flanged Washers for the Roller Shaft ends and the Shaft has been extended as described back at the start of page 3/post nbr #41 - Struggling with the Rear Rollers, namely finding quality old versions. I've used the ones off the 1954 Donor Mower, as they have the Brass Tube bore inserts, rather than just bored wood and are reasonable condition considering they've had 60 years use !. I'll give them a good soak in wood hardener, fill some of the hollows, stain and apply several coats of Yacht Varnish. I decided to cut one (good one) in half and cut the worn ends off the 2 - 8 inch long Rollers. This gave me 2 Roller sections on each side (original had 1 each side) of the new Spacer Tube. At least they are the same as the original length and may assist in turning with less drag- One disadvantage this Mower had was that it had to be tilted back onto the Rear Roller to pull the whole Mower when in Transit to and from Shed to Lawns, so they took a lot of punishment...I have a plan to eliminate this problem, but is another separate small project to deal with. So as mentioned previously, the Cylinder (Reel) has got to come out to be ground down so I can fix the clearance issues with the Bottom Blade Carrier. Need to save some cash for that, but at least I can finish all the parts ready to assemble and see if the Engine will spring into life ok .

Which Bolens are unusual / rare?

I have not been this excited since I collected my ex girlfriend from a Anne Summers' Party back in the 80s. The anticipation was unbearable. All this teasing just got to stop!

    Anyone Looking for a House

Alan, I only spoke German and some French when we came to the States and when I learned to speak English it was without an accent. I moved to Indian Territory after getting out of the army to find people with little command of the English language in the form of syntax or grammar. I have however learn to master the dialect to a tee and can converse with the locals like I was "bornd hear".. Come on over everyone else has, it would be nice to get some illegal immigrants that could speak the language I think we could pass you off as Canadians man I'm killing it here today.

    Cubcadet Cultivator

Hello All, As some of you will remember me and my grandfather made two cultivators late last year for the wheel horses, however I never really used it on my wheel horse as the snow plow frame and bracket is constantly attached, unless I chained it up, when I lowered the cultivator, the plow bracket would drop aswell, so I was bored over the weekend, and had some yellow paint left, I got to work, I had to cut some welds off, and widen the lifting arms, attach a few chains, and clips drill a few holes and a few coats of paint later it looked like this..... I doubt it will ever really work properly, only in the working arena at shows, it's now all ready for the show this weekend, Netley Marsh Steam And Craft Show.
