Ohlsson & Rice Powered BMX Bike

This started out as one of those ideas where my son and I just sat around wondering if it would work and sketching it out...the next thing I knew we were building it ! We've all seen the Tom Thumb and Micro Bikes...not very practical being 6 inches off the ground. Or the 26" cruiser bikes powered by the 50cc import engines...cool but it's been done a million times. We wanted to try something a little different. The aim was to build a lightweight, small frame bike to ride around the school campus. There are some pretty stringent rules as to what will qualify as a "motorized bike" vs a street legal machine that needs to be registered and tagged. Your not going to bolt a West Bend 580 into a Schwinn and go ripping down the bike lane and get away with it. Campus police are hip to people bending the rules. My son thought an old BMX bike might be an interesting platform...and the Ohlsson and Rice being a vintage "Made in the USA" engine was appealing to me. The biggest challenge will be wringing every bit of that 1 HP from what I see as an oversized model airplane engine. It may end up being an exercise in futility...but it will be an exercise in backyard mechanical engineering none the less and hopefully we'll both have some fun and learn stuff along the way.

    Project "Why Not"

Morning chaps, not much to report on the WN front as nothing has been happening.. But I did take her round the test track yesterday to get some on board video footage.. It's a shame the footage came out too shaky to use, I need to make a better camera mount! But I did push her harder than I have done with lot's of sideways action I'd best give her a bit of a clean up before BTF! Oh, one more think that I was suprised but happy to see... I had to turn WN around late yesterday to park her back in the workshop, so I climbed on and pottled down the carpark.. While turning I gave the loud pedal a little blip and the inside tyre chirped a little as it tends to do.. About 30 mins later I noticed a couple of marks on the tarmac! The little chirp was in fact both tyres breaking loose! Yes the carpark was a tad damp but it gives me great hope of some smokey dounuts in the future It's a bit hard to see but there are two strips of rubber left in the tarmac

    Yesterday's Farming

On 15th and 16th of August I went to Yesterday's Farming Show, held in Puckington, Nr. Langport, Somerset. Lousy start on Friday wet all day but made it onto the site unaided, finally found the campsite with he help of Charlie Moore and his Landrover, set the caravan up. Saturday was much better, display set up, went round the ring with my latest machine, a 1960 Merry Tiller, the only one that ran! First two pictures show two International Cub Cadets in the ring with the International tractors, international being the featured make this year. First we have Horticultural Steward Marcus Stephens on his 76, then Charlie Holland on his larger model. Third picture is of Charlie Holland's load, a Trojan Toractor. Fourth one is Marcus' Monrotiller, which also developed a fit of the gripes in the ring. Fifth one is a line up of horticultural section in the ring. Sixth one is the second line. Seventh and Eighth is my Merry Tiller Tarpen display[

Ohlsson & Rice Powered BMX Bike

I started this thread over on the Old Mini Bike forum where I am a member but I thought the folks over here might enjoy seeing it too. I have gotten a lot of help over here since joining and I surely appreciate it. Helping my son build a small (BMX) 20" bicycle that uses a 1HP O&R engine as a power assist. The idea will be to pedal it up to approx. 10 MPH and then let the motor propel the bike to (hopefully) 20 MPH if geared properly. Not sure if it work but it will be an interesting exercise for his mechanical engineering project. You may have to bear with me as I figure out how to cut and paste and upload images here....thanks !

The 29th annual Rudgwick Steam & Country Show held near Horsham. A very large show that always presents a great amount of variety. It lasts the whole three days of the august bank holiday weekend so attracts a lot of people Here's their website, thankfully the show is more organised than the website http://www.rudgwicksteamshow.co.uk/

Extract from Which 1964, testing several power lawn mowers, interesting to see how unreliable some were even when new.

    Panther 101 Hydraulic Power Pack.

Got the fuel tank all but straight today, theres still a few minor ripples left,- I'm guessing it was suffering from years of having the breaker and hose thrown on top of it as most people who use power packs seem to do. The weather with us was very damp so it has a slightly matt finish to it. On the next dryish day i'll give it another coat and see if I can get it to gloss up. Then it will be decaled up like the Solites tank. Then just the Exhaust heat shield and top frame left to do now.

Ohlsson & Rice Powered BMX Bike

We figured out early on working on the floor or bench wasn't going to cut it. We turned down a piece of black pipe and clamped it in the vise. Then we could drop the front fork neck over it and it conveniently allows us to swing the frame around from side to side. It would work better if we squared the bottom end to clamp it...instead we just cranked down on it hard enough to flatten the pipe lol... Here you see the new hub laced into the rear wheel and the 72T sprocket mounted...

Motivating this thing is going to take some serious leverage given the lack of HP and torque. We're shooting for a final drive ratio somewhere in the neighborhood of 20:1. There's a company called Stanton that makes all sorts of engine powered bike accessories including this rear hub with LH and RH threads on each end. One side gets a freewheel flange made to accept the (#35 chain) drive sprocket ...the other side gets a freewheel bike chain sprocket so you can stop peddling when the engine takes over.

Next I sourced an engine from Joe Webber out of Missouri. I told him it was a father son project we were working on and he couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. He gave us a great deal on the beautiful 1HP Compact III...looks like nos !

    Mayfield tractor

Yes indeed, they still have them in stock so that is one part off the list, thanks S1g I got this to cut the glades on my nature reserve so not sure about anything other than maybe a saw bench....keep me in mind though The carb is back on, no flooding so thats sorted with a bit of luck. Clutch cable was a bit mangled at the top end so I have cleaned it up with some shrink sleeving and a clamp to hold it out of harms way. Although I can start it with the handle I am going to get a pull cord,as I think the action is easier. Oh and It is a 12 /2HS

I think a line-lock should be next on the list, then you could do flame burnouts

    Panther 101 Hydraulic Power Pack.

Made a bit more progress with this pack today. New switch was fitted,a new gasket was made up for the tank and then assembled. The carb was overhauled and the air filter assembly straightened and fitted. I also refurbished the valve block, luckily the hydraulic filter is the same as used on some modern CAT power packs. The final job for today was to plumb in all the hydraulics.

Is it next weekend the Honiton Rally? Are there a lot of horticultural machinery in show? Cheers Andrew Edit: Just googled it and I see it the BH weekend. The auction look good and there appear to be some interesting items on display too.

    BOLENS STASH UPDATE

The B450 when it was a bit younger. About 43 years younger. Copied from a partly faded photo. My son, having a drive is now coming up to 50. John's land was a lot tidier then. Can't remember where exactly we had been to collect this load, but everything apart from the two wheel trailer has recently gone to pastures new. Both trailers were loaded with goodie's.
