i would like to say a very big thank you to all that supported this event for the past 3 years, the horticultural section is a major part of this event thanks to your contributions. the 2016 event will be held on the 20th and 21st of august and the running theme for our section will be british anzani easymows, lawnriders, motor hoes and iron horses. also just as important will be any other machinery that you want to enter. the working area will again be available and the display area will be in the same place as 2015. i know its a long way off but i aim to give you updates as soon as i get them. anyway enough waffling from me so again many thanks. ps, dont forget 20-21 august 2016 get it in your diaries :D

    A bit quieter now.

The exhaust on the Black Horse was a bit loud to say the least. Basically it is a 2" bore stainless tube with an 1-1/2" bore pipe, full of 3/8" holes and wrapped in wire wool with reducing mute, inside. A reducing mute is also inserted in the top of the outer tube. Today I decided to see if I could improve it's silencing qualities. At the top end of the inner tube, a ring is welded. This acts as a spacer between it and the outer tube. Four equally spaced tack welds hold it in place. First I cut out the ring between the welds and the end was blanked off instead of the mute. I only had enough wire wool to wrap the inner tube in, for half its length. Searching for something non-flamable/heatresistant, I found a box containing a roll of fine, stainless mesh. The type that is fitted to soffits on houses over ventilation holes/slots. This was wrapped in layers round the bottom half of the inner pipe and then all re-assembled. Lastly, the reducing mute was re-inserted into the top of the outer pipe and rain flap re-fitted. Idle and low rev running is a pleasant, low pitched beat. Also, when the flap is closed, the whistle it produced has gone. High revs, which had a rather ear shattering, strident pitch, now have a slightly subdued, mellower sound. I reckon if the whole length of the inner pipe, was wrapped in the stainless mesh, then it woud be even queiter at high revs.

Horses put away in the stable

I think there's a bit of rivalry going on, between the Showman, Meadowfield and HeadExam.

hi yeah the head has a crack through, it spits oil every were. the only way of fixing it is to use a welder that can weld cast iron, but the problem is that the head could warp and in result will not be able to go back on so I really need a second hand head or a new head. thank you Head exam I have PM you about the head and heli coiling. does anyone else know of any other 16hp cylinder heads for sale? thanks all for the advice and help regards Joe

    TIMBERRRR!

As some may recall, I mow the green and verges in our little hamlet. Recently, while doing the verge 'twixt lane and pond, I thought the foliage above seemed to be getting lower. On doing some investigation, I discovered a tree on the opposite bank was reaching right across the pond. The only thing stopping it falling in was a large Leylandii tree whose branches it was resting on and it's weight pulling that down.. It would be only a matter of time before both ended up in the pond and on the lane. So today, as not much water in the pond, myself and a neighbour's son set too to remedy the situation. First, using one of those pole chainsaws and my extending loper with pull saw attachment, we cut of as much as we could off both trees, to reduce the weight. Next I cut through the trunk of the tree on the far bank. Not completely, just enough for it to start to fall. Then back over to the Leylandii and cut through the branches supporting the other tree. until it descended gracefully. The Leyladii was then felled dragged out using my Discovery and cut into manageable pieces. The Disco was used again to extract the other tree from the pond. My C-121 (The Black Horse) and Saxon trailer were then pressed into service transporting several loads of logs. More to move tomorrow and another dying tree to fell.
