    Bolens HT20...A big project

Time for an update!! (I hope this isn't considered butchery by the puerists!!) Well, I started to look into fitting a new engine a few weeks back and this is how it is looking so far! I have extended the chassis and built a frame on the back to fit the bench seat for two people to potter round the rally field and also replaced the foot speed control with a hand operated quadrant assembly. I have machiened a boss to take a triumph herald UJ flange (and yolk) which I am using to repair the existing propshaft. I have made a dog drive for the starting handle (also homemade) so it disengages the handle when the engine starts (as opposed to the original which was on a key) and extended the handle shaft out the front of the tractor. I'm now going to start looking at the steering which will have to go down the side as there is no room with the new engine! I will post some more pictures up as progress continues!! Also I have some bolens leftovers including the old rear wheel arch/bodywork, bonnet (both in bad condition), some steering components and front PTO parts if these are worth anything to anybody as I don't partucually want to scrap them! Just let me know. Luke

    Project "Why Not"

Morning all, a bit more progress for you.. Starting at the top... Brake fluid reservoirs mounting bracket.. Only tacked on at the mo. Middle... Bonnet hinges... Bottom... Two bit's of box welded to the engine frame... These will bolt to the chassis and will add vital strength to that area.. Getting the engine out was interesting, slide it forward and lift at the same time! Engine frame bolted back on to help keep things in line during welding... Plenty of surface rust to be cleaned off! A view you would only normally get if you were lying on your back and had just been run over by WN I did make a good start on the cleaning up and welding yesterday, lot's of joints like this needed welding up.. A few more parts have turned up.. New front tyres, sorry for the rubbish photo.. And some shiny stainless pancake air filters.. These are for a 1098cc MG Midget engine so two of them should flow more than enough air.

    RedSquare information

This Saturday, May 16th, RedSquare will be going through a software upgrade. As most of you are aware, MoM and RedSquare are sister sites and share the same physical computer server. While this upgrade will not affect MoM, there may be periods of time where response time is sluggish simply because of the shared environment. RedSquare members, like what you see here? Please sign up, be glad to have you here as well, but remember this is for ALL machinery, not JUST Wheel Horses Now for the question you may be thinking... YES, MoM will be upgraded to the same software as well. Originally I wanted MoM to be first because it's smaller than RedSquare, but the forum skin for RedSquare was done before MoM's (which hasn't been updated yet). So after the upgrade pop over there and take a look because when everything is sorted, MoM is next -- Karl Status [x] 8:00am - Prepare alternate communications [x] 10:00am - Go grocery shopping (oh, you didn't need to know this one huh?) [x] 12:30pm - Lunch (was good) [X] 2:00pm - Forum will become off-line to members and a complete backup will begin - Database backup complete - File system backup in progress (pictures, manuals etc) complete [x] 3:30pm - Actual forum upgrade will begin (RedSquare will still be unavailable) [ ] 4:00pm - Upgrade completed, post upgrade steps begin (Still unavailable) [ ] 10:00pm - RedSquare available, *SOME* functionality may not be available

    Bolens Wheel Weight, and Tires/Wheels

I paid 150.00 shipped for my last two sets of rear Bolens weights. This makes 15 sets of wheel weights in my collection, I must be disturbed. For those that do not know Nigel's term of endearment, "Bar Steward, here is a link that covers the complete etymology of the phrase. http://onlineslangdictionary.com/meaning-definition-of/bar-steward That more than adequately describes me, lol. Bolens Husky 613 3speed

I bought this machine from second hand shop in internet. it cost me 80 €. working, but the engine has been chanced to briggs&stratton 8 hp, and the lawnblades were worn out and cuttened in pieces, also the 3 blade-tables was totally broken. But my father in law fixed them, so now my husky is working fine. Also i put better choke-handle to it, because it were not working, and the footgrill was too tiny and far away for my 6&7 years old boys to ride, so i make some bigger and longer footgrills to it. Now im looking for parts to this machine, Brake is barely working, also (because of that) the gearbox is quite rattling, when changing a gear when brakes are not totally bottomed.. Ou, i also put hand-handle for the brake, because its easier to the boys to work with. Then i must change the oil to the rear of the bolens. the tires are full-rubber in back, and normal air filled tires in front. Has anyone any guide to this model ? how i do the things right ? I can do them by my mind, but if there are some special what not to do, or what must do first, i dont know about things like that. And there are the accumulator under the seat, earlier owner has changed the tiny accu to normal car size accu, now it starts, no matter what! Thanks! i give some pics when i got my camera better... edited some odd words better..

Andrew, Despite my attachment being in very poor condition it is complete. Very happy to drag it out and take whatever measurements and pictures you need. From memory I think the bits I have marked within the blue border are wrong Iain

    Project "Why Not"

It's surprising just how much metal you have in that frame. The panels do a great job of covering it. Are you planning to weld on some tabs for holding the wiring and brake pipes? You should have used Triumph rather than MG filters, it would have been faster then Iain

Welcome to MoM! The 613 was basically identical to the 813/G8 other than the engine. You should be able to use these manuals: Bolens 813 (G8) Owners Manual.pdf Bolens_G-8_Parts_Manual_(pdf).pdf Small Frame Tractor Attachment Interchangeability .pdf

Interesting. The 425 isn't one that you see very often! Don't bet the farm on it, but it just may be possible to make that work on the later tube frames like the 1050, etc. Looking at the manual, which I'll attach, it looks like it may have been a 405A that was modified to fit the QT series. That's not unusual for Haban as they were masters at taking a basic design and modifying it to work across several brands. I found out about that with my first Sickle-Mo. It was a 414 which was for some Wheel Horse models, but by removing the extra bits that Haban attached so that it would hang on the Wheel Horse axle, and having the stub for the prop shaft lengthened a few inches, it was than identical to the 405A. The other extra bit was a 90 deg. gear box that attached under the Wheel Horse chassis to transmit the power to the Sickle-Mo I just have in storage. You can see the extra bits on the front hanger and the gearbox in these two pics: Haban Model 425 Manual Year 1974 for Bolens QT16, QS16 Tractors.pdf

    Yellow Mower Challenge!

Thanks Mark, Not a great deal of progress. Prepping the Rollers, a bit like watching paint dry really. They have been Treated with hardener. After having been dried, they had the blemishes filled with hard filler. I then started to seal the surface with the Varnish. I don't use brushes to apply it, as I fill the depressions first and build up a smooth surface by sanding in between coats. Takes 36hours to harden each coat before sanding. Had 3 coats so far- Should be done and ready to fit by the weekend.
