    The Ferrari.

hello, Ive stumbled across this wonderful forum for like minded folk. I recently picked this up, Its not running but looks complete other then a starter motor. And a perished rear tyre due to it been stood on it flat. It has a diesel 10 hp lombardini engine and i think its 1970's and thats about all I know about it, My plan it to get it started. paint the wheels, maybe replace the tyres with more tractor like tyres and use it. the first thing i found out about it was how heavy it is, I collected it on my own from someones back garden, had to get it down a alley with 90 degree bend, i had to lift and bounce it round, I think it was worth it. any info would be nice thanks Ash

    Ransomes Turf Trac /Steiner

Finally managed to find a Turf Trac, typically I have been looking for a couple of years finally bought one from way down south only to find another for sale on Gumtree at Annan 30 miles away ( lot more money ). This one is fitted with a 4ft front mounted cutting deck. The reason I wanted one was that trying to move a dead crawler from one garage to the workshop was just too much for my ride on mower and using a live crawler just chews up the drive and the garage floor. 16.5hp Kubota three cylinder engine starts and runs well. Hydraulic lift front and rear , front and rear pto. four wheel hydrostatic drive with twin ratio axles 11 miles an hour top speed. Pulls like a train and turns in a 36inch inner circle. Needs a new seat some decals and a general tidy up. Typical it rained persistently after delivery so limited playing time.

    Garner tractor

Here's a couple of photos of my Garner light four-wheel tractor. It has a JAP 5 engine, centrifugal clutch and 3 forward and 1 reverse gears. The large hand lever raises and lowers the draw-bar and a mid-mounted tool frame. I have the tool frame and 2 ridging bodies and a set of home made grubber tines. The toolbox behind the drivers seat is an old ammunition box, this I have been told was factory fitted by Garner.

If, when you bought it there was oil in the sump I think that it unlikely that either the main or big end bearings are the culprit - unless , of course the engine had seized in use . As you have suspected, the steel / cast iron rings have most likely seized to the bores/ liners. Can you drop the sump and slacken off all the bearing caps and see if there is any "rock" on the crank?

    Tractor World Malvern 2016

In addition to the 33 machines booked in so far ( still time if you hurry ) There will be a display from the MERL Archives, a display of Literature relating to the tractors, another display of literature relating to implements , a display of photos of machine around the World and a stand from Neil Jarrett carrying spare parts and interesting Ransomes items. If you need a particular part, ring Neil and ask him for what you need.

well everyone, not good news on the Ferguson! I had a go at moving the cylinder, but no chance! in the end after 3 or so hours lightly hitting it, I got the sledge hammer out and waked them with it and a block of wood, there wasn't even on inch or a mm of movement. I think the bearing are seized, in the crank and because the cylinders are at the top and bottom of their stroke it will take a bit to move it! so its on hold now, until at least a few months! not very happy but i'm very busy with the business and customers! so there wont be much update for a bit of time! I'm almost thinking of selling it and buying a different tractor! but not sure just yet, so no-one get any ideas regards Joe

    Ransomes ITW

Checked the exhaust valve clearance which was a bit tight and then noticed that the rocker arm bushes were worn which makes setting the valve clearance impossible. I then noticed that the valve spring retainer was a non standard item, the Drayton engine has two exhaust valve springs of unequal length the outer retains pressure on the rocker arm at all times, clearance is set using a narrow feeler through a slot in the upper spring retainer. This head had both springs held down by a standard collet collar, looks as if the previous owner had adapted a non standard valve which clearly worked but not properly which may explain why the diesel engine was removed and a petrol engine fitted. Fortunately I have a couple of spare brand new heads complete with valves so as a minor diversion I have fitted a new cylinder head. I have done this a few times before so took a guess at the gasket thickness and peeled off a few layers before I refitted the head leaving a piece of lead solder on top of the piston, Torqued the head down and turned the engine over a couple of time by hand, remove the head and measure the squished solder thickness luckily it was 0.9mm on the first go so took out the solder refitted the head and off we go. I was extremely lucky because these heads have a section that sits about 3/4" into the liner which is steel against an alloy head!! they can be absolute pigs to remove, usually evidenced by broken cooling fins on the head and barrel where levers have been applied in the past. Before now I have had to resort to removing head and barrel together and thumping the whole thing up and down on a wooden post with lots of heat to break the head free. This one popped off as soon as I undid the head bolts a sure sign it has been off before and not run much since. Picture on the right is the new head showing the slot for setting clearance in the outer spring cap.

Thanks I just ordered some rings from overseas .5 sets for $11.89 with free shipping. So I have little to lose if wrong size but I measured my piece of ring I found in engine for thickness and measured piston and bore so I think they will fit .May need to grind some to get wright end clearance . I will post results once I get them and install. Thanks
