5 pointsWhile waiting for the local engineering firm to open again to get the 2mm top folded up for my bench i thought i would make a start on my work table. All the 40 mm box steel cut to length and a few bits of 19mm as well. Starting to lay out the frame for the work top. Size is 2000mm x 1100mm. As i am only using 2mm sheet for the top, the extra internal bars will be carrying the weight of the tractors. My floor isn't very level so i have had to make adjustable feet. All six legs complete and ready to be welded to the frame. Legs tacked on and lower braces welded in place. Everything fully welded and ready for the wire wheel and some primer. Still need to make some ramps and get a top fitted.

Got this about a year ago. 1978 International 784. Slowly starting to replace all the rusted parts, mechanically everything works fine. -

Ewan's right, sometimes we use the word patina, when the real word is rust, be it mild or excessive. Patina affects the surface like tan or weathered skin, while rust is a cancer. Sometimes it takes youth to say what the older man would rather not see or face. -

So after many hours of battling with the axle pin we have finally got it out, after breaking a punch trying to get the rolled pin out we resorted to this. We tried to use the vice as a press to try and push the pin out however we had no luck. Next we tried to use the heat from a weld to try and loosen the pin but this didn't work either so we just cut the two collars off and drilled the pin out. This is what was left of the pin. When we make a new pin we will put a grease nipple in the end so that we can grease the axle and this won't happen again! -

Don't think that rust and patina can be separated so easily. Unless the metal is rusted through or structurally unsound it forms part of the patina , rust and all. To my mind an old machine in good original condition with 60% plus of its original paint is always preferable to one repainted to ex- factory condition - or better. I'm no fan of two pack on a machine that would have left the factory painted cellulose or synthetic paint. That said I totally subscribe to an owner doing whatever they like with their own kit, but originality once gone can't be replace! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patina -

Don't be fooled by the pictures, the patina you see is a mix of the original paint, a layer of red oxide and some JCB yellow slapped over the top. In between and underneath there is a huge amount of rust. We will end up doing a lot of cutting and welding new pieces in. It's just taken 4 hours to remove the seized axle pin. Pretty well everything is in a state! I think Ewan will be posting an update later... -
1 pointI don't know how you can say it better, at least in my opinion. I'm never satisfied with even my good two part paint job as being that close to factory, but at least for now I have slowed/stopped the deterioration.

1 pointnice job noel. that wee welder hasn't done that much work in years!

1 pointThe adjustable legs are a great addition!

1 pointIt does have a good patina but under the million layers of paint there is quite a few places where it has rusted through so it will need quite a bit of work.
