In the farm house garden and in one or two places by buildings, is quite a collection of antique farm implements. Photo's below.

Beamish Museum is situated near Stanley county Durham, on Saturday and Sunday 23rd 24th July the Beamish Tractor Show was held on the old exhibition showfield at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North. A varied selection of stationary engines, horticultural equipment, tractors and a few commercials attended. A couple of rare items were noted an unknown make of grass cutter with a Humber engine (Humber were a English car maker many years ago) and also a rare Allen Scythe born about 1935  with steel wheels, with a Villiers two stroke engine which was cast on the engine cowling and straight handles not the usual curved ends, a good couple of days were had by all great weather  and a look around the museum.

Bumped his topic as I had to make more improvements to it's condition. Plus I need to excercise the hands caused by R/Arthritis, so glad to get back into the workshop.
The spindle/chuck mounting bodge of a cut off piece of bolt shown in earlier pics was just not good enough.
I made a new complete spindle from 3/4" (19.05mm) dia silver steel. Set up in the lathe and acurate to within 2 ten thousandths of an inch (0.00508mm) over it's length.
Pic below is after machining the chuck thread on the end-

Comparision of the old and newly machined spindle ends-

After measuring, I found I could reduce the length of the 3/16" (4.75mm) wide cut slot for the new one, which produces a better bearing surface. the chuck thread for the English made Jacobs chuck is 1/2" x 20 tpi UNF, and the smaller diameter top end threaded 3/8" Whitworth. Both were screwcut on the lathe (my 1st attempt at power feed screwcutting)-

Did a check with a 5/16" (7.95mm) diameter long Dowel Pin fitted in the chuck while still on the lathe and it had only 0.0015" (0.038mm) runout at 1.5 inches (38mm) from the chuck jaws!, so pretty good allowing for the age of the chuck.
Did the same after fitting back into the drill and adjusting lower bearing clearance, I got 0.003" deflection while applying a side load, so I am more than happy now with it's condition.
    Regards

Thought I'd add another find to this old Topic. Acquired another pressure feed 'Oiler' for a 'Fiver' (uk£5.) It was amongst a box of bits from a shed clearance. It was in a bit of mess, seized and badly beaten-

Initial clean up to see what I had revealed it was another Lucas Oiler from the 1920s. Diameter is 1. 1/2" (38mm) to give you an idea of size. All I could do was bite the bullet and desolder it all and reduce to constituant parts and see if I could clean it out and repair it back to working order. After a few days work, I had reduced it to this-

I managed to remove some serious dents to improve appearance, but will always have the scars of use/misuse to show it's age.
I had to overcome a problem with reassembly due to not being able to solder some internal joints and ensure they held in the right place and soldered/sealed together.
So I hard soldered some parts and so able to ensure it all went ok when 'Closing up' the 5 other soft soldered parts/joints all at the same time .
The bronze 3/8" dia ball is a replacement, as the original steel one looked more like a large lump of weld spatter. So I lapped the new one to it's seat for a good non-return seal.
New leather washers made for the plunger and filler-

As usual, the end cap and threaded section was missing, so I reproduced a nozzle and cap. The cap having a leather pad in it to seal it when screwed on.

After several flushes with acid, soapy water and dried out, it had the plunger sealing washer greased, piston oiled/primed and filled.
No leaks and can now deliver a single drop or stream under pressure at any angle. The fine nozzle can displace the small ball in oil nipples to lubricate, rather than have a cumbersome Grease gun type nozzle which is useless in confined places on machines.

So that's the Lucas Oiler No 36 given a new life and will have a copper 'Holster' to safely stow it on the Lathe or Mill in the workshop.

    Hi folks,

I got somewhat of an update on the tractor, and there is story behind this one. I took the seat off the tractor a month ago to work on the voltage regulator and the battery box and just left it off to eventually sand it down, primer it, paint it, and have it reupholstered. I thought to myself a couple weeks ago when it was a very warm temperature and sunny day out that "today is gonna be that day", OR so I thought. I was taking the nuts and bolts out of the seat with a ratchet and socket to sand it down with my stepdads DA or dual action sander/polisher, and my stepdad says to "just grind them off it will be faster" so we did. When we grinded the nuts and bolts off the seat we noticed that the crack in the middle of the seat just so happens to be so to speak "bondoed" or patched with brass, I say it is bondoed or patched with brass because we took the grinder and put the wheel on and it did not create any sparks. See 1st photo below.

Anyway as a separate note if you look at my 2nd picture, when we grinded the nuts and bolts off the seat there was a non original plate that the nuts and bolts were holding onto. I say the plate is not original to the seat because I looked at the bottom of my 10 horsepower Craftsman seat and it is different like in the 3rd picture, and just to verify if it is like the 3rd picture I looked at my stepdads 10 horsepower Craftsman and it was the same thing. That said right now the plan of action is to......

    1) Sandblast the whole seat from the tractor,

    2) Have the local fabrication shop I had make my battery box pieces fix the seat and make the correct piece for the bottom,

    3) primer, then paint the seat black,

    4) then have it reupholstered in the same pattern as my 10 horsepower seat.

    Wish me luck!

This weekend has been the Hethersgill Vintage Clubs annual rally. Because of covid we have not been able to run it for three years. So it's been like a fresh start.
Friday I took my farmer mates caravan through to the site, while he followed with cattle trailer with signage, table, chairs and my Sears/Roper GT16. We then erected the auction tent. I later returned home to load my car with stuff I was taking for the auction a long with a small 3X4ft trailer.
Saturday was mainly spent booking in early arrivals and things for the auction, plus setting up the car display area. After a whisky laced coffee in the caravan and retired to bed in the back of the car. Number 3 grandson bedded down in his car along side. His first time away with me and at the rally. He did very well helping out here and there.
Up early Sunday and soon was time to start booking in the car entries. Three of us were doing this but I kept getting dragged away to sort out some other peoples problems. Ten o'clock and the gate opened for the public.
The show finished around 4pm and it was time to start packing stuff away and helping load things that people had bought at the auction. I got a nice little trailer. Quite pleased with it. Also a cast iron Bamfords seat of some farm equipment. That will turn into a garden seat similar to one we already have. I hadn't given any thought as to how I was getting the trailer home. But Lewis phoned his eldest brother and he came and collect it along with the Sears and delivered it to my place. Eventually I arrived home about 8pm. had a bite to eat then unloaded the car. Well and truly tired. Bed by 10am and didn't wake till 6pm.
Today back to the site and helped finish clearing up. Took the newly purchased trailer and brought a couple of tractor tyres my mate had bought.
So below are some photo's for your perusal.

They are going to put a seat in his shower at home with hand rails. Also a rail going up the stairs. So he may be home sooner than thought.
