Westie1 reacted to Stormin in Benches.
In the back of the workshop I've had some iron garden seat ends, that I painted a few years ago. Finally decided to do something with them. So some beech beams from a ship I've also had lying around, (The beams not the ship), found their way to a neighbours who's a joiner. There they were cut into strips to make seat slats. I then gave them three coats of yacht varnish. Today I put everything to gether.

Carol is well pleased as she likes a variety of places to sit.

Next on the list was the bench we have out on the green. It was an old park bench that was given to us some years back. About 20 I think. I'd done it up then, but the years have taken their toll.

That soon ended up like below with the aid of the chainsaw.

    So it looked like this.

After a couple of hours it is now ready for some paint.

        To be continued.

Westie1 reacted to Wristpin in Fuel problems.
Don’t think that you need anything too harsh or abrasive as in a plastic tank there is not usually any bound on dirt like rust to steel. I would remove the tank, seal off the outlet and add an inch or so of fuel and give it a good swirl round then pour it back into a can via a gauze filter funnel with a bit of blue roll in it as an additional filter paper. While pouring try to keep the fuel swirling to help any debris in suspension. Then have a look at the blue filter and see what may have been captured.
As an aside and not wishing to insult anyone, I used to regularly see people sealing off fuel pipes with a handy bolt. The problem is that the threads act as a rasp and loose of bits of pipe material which tend to fetch up where they aren’t welcome. Other than using the proper clamps, when scrapping an engine I used to save the mushroom cam followers. They are hard, polished and have slightly tapered ends and are unlikely to cause the above issues. Two or three different diameter ones are useful emergency bungs.

Made up another exhaust stack for the C-125 this morning. The one on was an old BSA motorcycle silencer. The outlet pipe was rather holey, with a cut up tin can wrapped round and held by jubilee clips. So cut off the bad bit off the BSA one and the tail end off a tractor one.

    The result.

I have finally finished refurbishing my C 160 Automatic and mowing deck.  The paintwork is not up to show standard but it shouldn't rust and it is intended to be a 'working tractor'.
IU am no engineer and the whole project has bee a steep learning curve for me, having never sprayed or completely dismantled a machine before.  If I ever attempt another it should be like shelling peas as I
think I must have already encountered 90% of potential problems.
I'm still working on the photography/uploading - the last photo should be the first.

My rear discharge mowing deck is getting rather worse for wear. I've already replaced the top, but now the tin worm is getting the better of the sides. So today I went to see another I knew of. It was a bit grimy and the paint underneath was flaking due to being in a shed with an earthen floor. Shell is good and solid and everything turns freely. Looks like it has seen very little use as the blades are still sharp and keen.
A good clean and some paint and it should be in service by the end of the month.

After loading it into the Disco, the seller mentioned a plough at the back of the shed. He thought it was a Brinly and it proved to be so. In good condition and the share coated with a good layer of grease. Again looked little used. Needless to say, that ended up keeping the deck company on the journey to their new home.

I declined the offer of the C-125 in need of some TLC, the deck came off. Discretion being the better part of valour. I've promised to put that in the for sale section.

Afternoon all, After a few busy months I finally had the chance to make a start on the massey! The aim is to get it running for a show late in July.

Heres some before photos in case you forgot

First job was to get the front up on some axle stands, remove the hood and front wheels. The steering needs some work as everything is very worn.

it needs some serious degreasing as well so the engine was next to come out, it also helps to have the engine on a bench as it will need a partial strip down.

here you can see just how worn the axle is, it is a very lightweight casting and unfortunately it is a bit twisted.

Next I made a new bush for the axle, should work just fine.

after a bit of cleaning up. the original paint is in excellent condition, just a shame someone painted over it.

These are going to require some attention at some point.

On closer inspection, one of the engine mount holes has cracked, just visible above, now welded up.

The idler pulley and steering column was removed and then everything given a good clean.

For a 56 year old machine, i'm surprised nothing is rusted solid, didn't even have to use any heat.

Next job when i'm home next is to replace the bearing in the idler pulley and sort out the worn steering components.

Just had a look at this 14hp k321 and looks like the rod had snapped and damaged the crank. The bearing plate it spinning but im not sure if its from damage or being removed. Everything else inside looks ok to my very untrained eye.

Westie1 reacted to Fix'em all in Exhaust valve opening on compression stroke
You will also find that older Briggs & also Tecumseh engines around 5hp open the exhaust valve slightly on compression. As the engines wear this can cause starting issues due to low compression. On OHV engines I have countered this by increasing the gap on the exhaust valve & on side valve engines I have removed the exhaust valve & ground a bit off the valve stem (not too much).  I am sure Wristpin will not necessarily approve of this practice but it has worked for me on several occasions.

I did a short test run and did not lower the plough completely, but the 3 bottom plough moved through centuries old grazing land like it was pulling a small wagon at depth of just over 6-7 inches. I chose not to use coulters as even with short grass it tends to clog the ploughs. Tomorrow I will stake out a 10 acre plot with flags and wait for a good day to put steel to earth. The David Brown 990 6 speed live drive is  just a wonderful joy to drive and each day I'm getting more proficient in her operation.

Well I'm happy to report all I need to do is punch out some pins and split the box from the frame had a very productive few hours at it with one of my pupils at school! He loved it too

The pin was just being stubborn and I think was slightly mushroomed.
I've a few broken bolts but overall rather good
