McGee wheel hoe

Thought I'd share this hoe with you men over there. I just restore this last week and Saturday will be its first showing to the public. This hoe was built in the 1890-1910 time frame and sold thru John Deere jobbers. It has a set of spring loaded handles that let you squeeze them together to get closer to the crop, or if released open back out. Enjoy! -

A mate brought around a truck load of goodies for me on Friday, which includes some good wood, steel, and some metal cupboards and shelving. I am in so much trouble with the boss and I had to listen to my list of my crimes this morning. This included not cutting the grass last weekend, putting the Bolens stash in the garden and now filling the drive with what has been described as rubbish (or words to that effect). Apparently if I was single everywhere would be littered with this sort of stuff. She does make being single sounds very attractive I foreseen a weekend of grass cutting and moving things about. I am going to try to compress that into today so I can start to check out the stash tomorrow. Iain -
4 pointsHi Charlie, I did the front tyre swaps on WN today so I took a few photo's to help you... Tools of the trade... Valve spring compressors, valve removal tool, a bit of thick wall pipe and of course some tyre levers.. First things first.. Take the valve out and stand well back while all the smelly air escapes.. Get the valve spring compressor and hook the base over the edge of the wheel rim Push down on the spring compressor lever until the threaded adjustable bit touches the tyre and the edge of the rim. Wind the adjustable bit down until it pushes under the edge of the rim.. I find a bit of extra leverage is handy so I slide this short length of bike fork tube ( I call it a ex-stanchion bar ) over the lever. A bit of pressure later and a nice large bit of the wheel rim inside is showing.. Keep the pressure on with one hand and after a bit of gentle levering with a tyre lever the tyre pops off the bead. Turn the wheel over and do it all again to pop the other side of the tyre off the bead. Levering one side of the tyre off the rim is quite easy (don't forget the lube) so I didn't take any photos of it, however getting the other side off can be a pain.. It's a bit hard to see from this photo, my left hand is holding down two tyre levers that are spaced apart but are also in between the tyre and the wheel rim. The tyre lever in my right hand is being used to turn the rim rather than lever it.. A few smallish turns of the rim and it pops out of the tyre I hope this helps you out Charlie, as for getting the new tyre on.... It took a lot of swearing and sweat and two hands which is why I didn't take any photos of it!

The other day I picked up a few new toys to play with, both need a little work to be how I picture them, I picked up a Cultivator that needs painting up, not sure what machine to sit it behind yet... I've freed all the nuts off and the tines all move up and down the wheel is moving up and down and also turns freely, just needs a coat of paint to match what ever machine I stick it behind. I also picked up a nice front weight box for my wheel horse, not too sure what to fill it with yet, but I am in the middle of making a bracket for it to sit on!.. I picked up lots of bits and pieces to hopefully make the stack exhaust I was going on about. A nice round small baffle box with some great pipe! Finally the thing I'm most pleased about.... Now this is different, I'm not sure what it's exact use is nor am I sure what it come from, it could be a front bucket type thing or anything, well I'm not too fussed on what it was, because I know what I'm going to try make it be ... You see these 'Transport Boxes' on the back of yard tractors etc, I've seen a few around the shows on grey fergies and the likes, but I've never seen one on this scale, so I am going to give it a go and try make this into a small transport box yet again don't know what machine to put it behind but I'm sure ill work that out at a later date, my plans with it are to attach it somehow..... It's not heavy at all really so this shouldn't be an issue, and then I'm hoping to paint the frame and stick some varnished wood into the sides and floor. -

well finally an update on this machine. we found some more culprits of compression loss(being non existant really) the darn thing wasn't timed proparly also this didn't help either yep that's right that's one rather crusty exhaust valve oh and can you tell i'm dutch BUT, we found new valves online and got those yesterday we got those installed and after some lapping the fitted pretty nice then came the buttoning up part all buttoned up and no place to go and this afternoon it made some bloody noise -

I Hope I Didn't Get Ripped Off

My seller promised me 2 rear wheels and tires and front and rear wheel weights for 50.00 dollars, it cost 155.00 to ship, 205.00 total. I went to the shipping company, no tires and wheels, just the 4 weights. I say I am not going to pay 155.00 for shipping 4 weights that measure 12x12x16 total, no matter what they weigh. The shipping manager says "How about 25 bucks" and I say YEAH. I really didn't want the old tires and rims, I didn't need them especially for 125.00 extra or less in this case. So the front and rear weights ended up as 75.00 for all four. On eBay I see these fronts go for over 200 without shipping and the rears for 170 without shipping -

Glad you approve Today has been mostly about changing the front tyres and cleaning up the wheel rims.. There I was busy cleaning a wheel rim with a sanding wheel in the electric drill. I can't hear anything over the sound of the drill, so I'm in a little world of my own.. I had no idea that Nigel had been behind me for a few min's trying to get my attention.. When he finally did get my attention it made me jump and knock the wheel I was working on off the bench! The wheel hit the concrete floor with a bang and a flash! I thought the flash was the wheel hitting a bit of flint mixed in with the concrete.. Until I looked at the rim.... Hang on.. That's the sort of mark only an electrical arc could make! The flash was not flint, it was the rim cutting through my extension lead!!! Anyway, have a pic of a nice clean wheel rim... It was soon given a couple of coats of red oxide followed my some grey primer before putting the new tyres on. Here's how she looked by the end of today.. Not much left to do -

Great pictures Alan, I think me and Iain both were too excited at the time to even consider taking any pictures. I have to admit it at least I had one of the nicer, more unique bolens ride with the horses, a very cool machine which I look forward to see Iain getting up and running. I had an amazing weekend, a really great adventure that I will never, ever forget. Tom -

Whilst I'm soaking the Beaver II in freeing oil I thought I'd make some progress with the Solite. All the bolt on parts have now been overhauled, unfortunately some haven't come up quite as nice as I would of liked, however they are not too bad and will surfice until better replacements turn up, which may be some time as Parts for the G400 Honda seem to be very hard to locate, not suprising really though as it was discontinued 30 years ago. Just waiting on a decal for the air shroud. Now that the head is off the bore can be seen to be in very good condition, just a little glazed. I would say this machine has done very little work in its life. -

1 pointHello James, full throttle,no choke, if it runs for a couple of seconds keep giving it a short squirt,if the fuel is the problem the engine revs and dies and revs and dies as you give it the shots. did this last weekend to get my mates J D 279 mower to run, it had the same symptoms. Doug.

1 pointI was in a similar place a while back, turned out my 'new' spark plug was duff, have you tried the old one? I had idle but wouldn't rev up, and after using a spark tester i watched the spark drop out as the revs increased. The spitting is the engine flooding and the fuel igniting in the chamber.

1 pointExtracted the engine from the frame today, the one av rubber snaped, but apart from that it lifted out fairly easily, just very heavy for its size of 10 hp. I also removed the oil cooler in the hope that I would find a date on it, unfortunately the label has gone awol. Jcb didn't bother replying to my request for information on the year of my machines, but reading the serial number Ive come to the conclusion its probably from 1983.- Older than my wife! Under the oil cooler housing I found yet more confirmation that this machine is supposed to be yellow. Unfortunatley the exhaust is rotten on the bottom, does anyone have a spare please? Also does anyone have any thoughts on how I can clean the aluminium up on the block as its very corroded.

1 pointI would be looking at the vast array of motorised vehicles, ones used for hauling, and ones used to haul tractors to the show. We don't see anything like that here, just your pedestrian Ford, Chevy, and Dodges

1 pointPaul I'm glad to see you and others collecting the smaller vertical shaft machines, they are really hard to find (especially in great shape like yours), because so many people threw them away, now they are starting to be real collectibles, like Mustangs II's.
